[SinBin] Peter DeBoer lost all 5 conference finals appearances over the last 6 seasons in 6 or fewer games. Power play (8 for 75 overall) is a huge reason.

Let me preface this by saying I’m kind of new to hockey fandom, I’ve been a casual follower for a couple years, but I went to my first game this year and fell completely in love with it.

In my quest to learn more about the sport and its history, I discovered the coaching history of Peter DeBoer. My question is, why the hell did the Sharks and Knights fire this guy? With the Sharks he went to the Western Conference Finals twice, the Stanley Cup Finals once, and made the playoffs in every season he was there until he started the 2019-20 season 15-16-2 and they canned him.

With the Knights he made the WCF his first two years, and missed the playoffs once then was shown the door once again. Now he’s with the Stars and made the WCF last year, and won the Central this year.

As a longtime diehard NFL fan, it confuses me because a coach who makes the playoffs more often than not with multiple conference championship appearances has zero chance of getting fired after one bad season, let alone one bad half season. It makes me wonder if the NHL is less patient and that’s just how it goes, or if the Sharks and Knights specifically are less patient. TIA

Peter DeBoer has been involved in the Vegas Golden Knights’ postseason (or lack thereof) all seven years of their existence.

It’s remarkable, really:

  • 2018: DeBoer’s San Jose Sharks lose to VGK in six games in round 2.

  • 2019: DeBoer’s Sharks defeat VGK in seven games in round 1.

  • 2020: DeBoer takes over as head coach of VGK a month before the COVID pause, and coaches in the playoffs. VGK loses to Dallas in five games in the Western Conference Finals.

  • 2021: DeBoer’s still head coach. VGK loses to Montreal in six games in the Stanley Cup Semifinals.

  • 2022: VGK misses the playoffs. DeBoer is fired after the season, then hired by the Dallas Stars.

  • 2023: DeBoer’s Stars lose to VGK in six games in the Western Conference Finals. Knights go on to win the Cup.

  • 2024: DeBoer’s Stars face the Knights yet again, in the first round.

[Wyshynski] Peter DeBoer: “Listen, what happened with Jamie … he’s not a suspension-a-month guy. He plays a physical, clean game all the time. He crossed the line one night. It’s a non-issue. I don’t think it’s fair to paint him with that brush based on one incident.

Peter Deboer Review

Hello boys and girls. I remember in the off season, there was quite a lot of skepticism and pessimism regarding the hiring of Peter as head coach. Now that we are halfway through the season, I think the bare minimum amount of time has passed to give this guy a proper review.

So, what do you all think? Is he doing better, worse, or about as good as you think he was going to? Do the boys like him? Do you think he has staying power or is this just a really good first season? And, most importantly, do you think he is a good coach for the stars? (In that, does he fit our team well and what it stands for. Does he represent our Texas and Dallas values. Does he compliment the team and is he what we needed.)

[Pierre LeBrun] Dallas Stars and Peter DeBoer working away on a four-year deal worth north of $4 million a season, sources say. Still not signed but that’s where it’s headed once finalized.
