So, I'm Chinese-Canadian and finding a good and authentic Chinese restaurant hasn't been the easiest task, especially after the pandemic. And it's even harder to please my first generation immigration parents (kinda snobby, ngl). They've definitely been around the block, from Yangtze to your local mom and pop Chinese-American. I found a recommendation in Ottawazine, a Chinese-language Ottawa-based newspaper for the soft opening for Quanjude.

Now, I've heard of Quanjude. It's fairly famous in China for, you guessed it, Peking duck. I wasn't sure if this was a new franchise location or someone just copping the name. I checked the website and showed it to my Mom and she said yup, that's the logo of the one in Beijing. So why not. Made a reservation. Tried it out and my parents said this is the nicest Chinese place they've been in Ottawa.

If the folks are saying it's good, that shit's really good. The only complaint they had was the price, but just the duck split 4 ways was fairly competitive for Ottawa. They haven't really been out post-pandemic. They ain't know about the restaurant (and tip) inflation.

Recommendation is to order the duck while making the reservation. Takes some prep time.

Edit: also the ambiance is sublime and the waiters were outstanding in both English and Mandarin. As a graphic designer, I can stare at their encyclopedic menu for hours. It's gorgeous.

Edit 2: I don't want to give people the wrong idea, it's still very pricey. We paid $300 for the Peony set and like 6 other dishes. However, I find this a little more enticing when I'm now paying 18$ for a large shawarma combo. I might be irrationally justifying it, but going to other Chinese places is going to be $150-$200 for not even half as good. I'm dead set on going back to Quanjude, but yeah it's going to be for special occasions.
