I hope I'm not reviving an old thread but I recently purchased this game and I'd love to talk about it. If there is a better or more current thread please feel free to point me in the right direction. But for now, I've played every Yakuza game and I have to say that I'm very impressed with LAD so far.

The more I play the more it seems that Ichiban is insane. Im against the dad hunters right now and they only transformed for him, haha.

You're absolutely right, lmao. I got the same vibe from him. Crazy guy running around Ijincho dropkicking pedestrians he sees as 'villains.' HA!

He just sees the world as a Hero, that's all :)

I forgot how long some of the cutscene are! Not a complaint, and this is my first yakuza game I’m playing in English. And I’m also digging the turn based combat, even though I was skeptical about that at first. Great game so far

That first chapter is strong. I'm excited to see where the story goes.

I read a couple reviews saying the start was a little slow, but having played up to the end of chapter 3, I super disagree. I honestly think this might be the best lead-in for a Yakuza game, Ichiban goes through a lot of stuff in the first couple chapters, and it sets up the state of his life pretty well from there.

Is this similar to persona in any way? It definitely gives me persona vibes.

It's an over the top turn based RPG. It is filled with mini games and heavily story driven with a ton of sidequests.

In combat, you can't actually move, everyone runs around on their own. However, if you select Enemy B, and Enemy A is between the two of you, they will slap you and prevent your attack. This works both ways, as well as for objects on the ground that get used as weaponry. In past Yakuza games, the real-time fighting meant you had to run around and grab trash cans etc. Since you can't do that here, instead if you are near them (mostly Kasuga, maybe others depending on what job they are, I haven't unlocked job switching yet), you will grab the object or kick it at the enemy before rushing in for the standard attack, and others in the way of the target could take the hit instead if the object is thrown/kicked.

Sometimes you can stun or knock an enemy down, but even though the game is turn based, knocked down enemies will get up soon even if you're dallying in menus. Stun sticks until their turn, but a simple knockdown won't. Knocked down enemies take extra damage since you'll curb stomp them or something in place of a standard attack. I guess you could consider this to be a bit similar to the Press Turn system of Persona for hitting weaknesses.

You also have actual special moves and abilities that use MP, and yes you have a Magic stat even though this game takes place in modern times XD. Summons as well, because Kasuga loves Dragon Quest and they use that as the entire excuse to have made the game turn based, and even talk about DQ in-game. Even the enemies have really goofy and insensitive names like Hungry Hungry Homeless Name. It is a bit jarring to see the exact same face/outfit on enemies in battle but whatever, you're about to smash them in.

As someone that has felt the series was beyond stale for awhile now, I am totally loving this.

Thanks! This is definitely in my radar

The summary sounds very similar to the first game Yakuza game.

I thought their was some dlc to have kiryu work for you

The lip sync and overall facial animations are extremely good, regardless of playing in English or Japanese. When I played Ghost of Tsushima (which I loved) I noticed while playing in Japanese the lip sync was a little "off", RGG Studio really went into great detail with the presentation, tone and expressions and they deserve praise for it.

If you have time to answer, how much of the game is actually voiced? I've always wanted to play these games, but because of an inability to read visual text fast enough to keep up with subtitles I never could. I know at last this one's dubbed, but I also know a lot of Yakuza's dialogue in the past has been text only. I can read little bits here and there, but whole conversations tend to take me a while, even when I can read at my own pace. So voice is always welcome both for immersion and accessibility.

Cause the lips are animated for the English voice lines, and while its not horrible most of the time, its definitely noticeable and annoying at other times. I like the Japanese VAs, but it was nice playing in English on my NG+ playthrough just cause the voices actually matched with their lips.

About 15 hours in or so (got the game early)

Loving it so much. It really is something else, and alot better then my expectations were.

[–]Literally_shitting 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Sorry to be that guy, but do I need any prior experience with yakuza games before this one? I heard this was something of a soft reboot for the franchise and it looks real good to me compared to the brawl style in the other ones

[–]LostInStatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Story wise, this game assumes you have completed 6 and will spoil the state of the world after the previous main character's arc is over

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

You do not! There will be some cameos and stuff etc but its an entirely new story, with new characters.

Awesome, thanks!
