The controls just feel so off to me, the jump feels so weird to me and the aiming the down hit with the left stick is so hard for me to ever get used to. Maybe someone could help me to get the hit direction to be on a different control than the movement stick.

[–]simonthedlgger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What feels off about the jump? You have total control.

[–]lcfcjs -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh god another indie 2D platformer game? I'll give it a miss, thx

[–]one_way_out 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Just deleted this game after about 10 hours. Honestly, I just file this game under the category of games that do not respect a player or their time. The mechanics that force backtracking to death location, not being able to swap relics on the fly, and making the fucking compass be a relic that uses a slot is absolutely unacceptable. The fact that combat does not include a dodge function, and that just touching an enemy causes damage just blows my mind on how bad that feels when the jump to close the gap between you and an enemy is so floaty its hard to calculate precisely. I honestly could not recommend this game to anyone. It's a shame the art style is so good but the mechanics are terrible. Guacamelee is 100% the clear winner in enjoyment if you actually want to have fun.

[–]camobandaniel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you read this post, please don't let this person's negative experience affect your opinion of this game without trying it first. The game mechanics evolve as you play, as does your ability to play better as you learn and develop the muscle memory necessary to progress. This game is not going to hold your hand, if you do back track too much because you think you missed something, you will lose your path and get lost, and yes the wayward compass as an item to fill a charm slot is a well thought mechanic and creates more of a challenge. Challenges are good, this game is good, it is also a free download for Plus subscribers this month. I have no complaints with the game myself, other than I want to keep playing but have to stop to eat, sleep, and work. Also, I think there are easier games to play that will alleviate your frustration as well as p2p games that will allow you to purchase your progress if you don't want to invest your time in getting good. Peace out home slice.

[–]Bilski1ski 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Did you unlock the dash move ? That’s like a dodge, the combat improved a lot for me after that

[–]one_way_out -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Yeah I got the dash, the spell that launches you into the ground and just gotten the dream nail before the issues boiled over for me. The main bosses I actually felt satisfying learning the mechanics it felt like God of War fighting the Valkyries and learning their move sets. My main issues are with the mechanics I stated with backtracking, the relic system and too few checkpoints and navigation issues.

[–]prophetoftruth03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's far too boring of a game to justify the sheer amount of backtracking it requires.

[–]buzz737 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Great game, never thought I would like this kinda genre. The only thing I find a bit problematic is that it doesn’t give you any tutorial, you are supposed to find out everything on your own.
Can anyone suggest similar games like these?

[–]simonthedlgger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyper Light Drifter, Shadow of the Colossus, Journey also!

[–]Kennett-Ny 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Unfortunately the ones I'd recommend the most are not on PS4 (Ori and The Blind Forest & Ori and The Will Of Wisps) So here's some others you might enjoy

Guacamelee! 1 & 2

Dead Cells

Salt and Sanctuary

Axiom Verge

Blasphemous

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Hyper Light Drifter

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Celeste

Rain World

Cave Story+

The Messenger

[–]whacafan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya know, I played the first Ori and it was fun but something about it drove me nuts. I would definitely play the sequel but I seem to remember being very frustrated with a lot of the stuff closer to the end.

[–]buzz737 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks! I intend to try out xcloud whenever it drops in my region, I will probably get to play Ori then..

[–]Kennett-Ny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah nice, well in that case. I'd definitely recommend playing Ori, as well as the others in the meantime

[–]haynespi87 13 points14 points  (9 children)

This along with Celeste, Cuphead, and Hades are the godsends of recent indies imo.

[–]Kennett-Ny 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Can't forget Risk Of Rain 2

[–]haynespi87 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That looks really interesting

[–]Kennett-Ny 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's an up to 4 player 3rd person rougelike where you battle enemies in different levels, with the difficulty increasing overtime. You do this whilst collecting random items that make your character (there's 10 currently available) better.

By completing challenges during your run, you can unlock more ability for your character. which you can choose to swap to during round setup.

Each run is completely different from the last. You can also unlock artifacts that can change up the gameplay even more.

For example: * Choose your items * Monsters drop items on death, but chests no longer spawn * Friendly fire is enabled for both survivors and monsters alike. * When one player dies, everyone dies. Enable only if you want to truly put your teamwork and individual skill to the ultimate test * Enemies can only spawn as elites

[–]haynespi87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely has some Dead Cells vibes but based on an even more random modifier.

[–]Han560c00kedturkey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Agreed they have no right being so good

[–]haynespi87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real. But I put them up against AAA games any day. While I think Hades, Cuphead and Hollow Knight have moved out of indie status I prefer them to many other games

[–]BurtRaspberry 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Just started playing it... maybe am 2-3 hours into it. Honestly, I think it's pretty boring so far. Doesn't feel TOO difficult yet, but fair. Enemies are boring. There isn't a lot to collect so far. It feels like a slow trickle of abilities and items. Hmmm... personally I had more fun starting Castlevania games. I think with Castlevania games and other Metroidvanias, there are more diverse enemy characters, more interesting boss fights, and an abundance of equippable and usable items available early on.

[–]TifoASRoma 12 points13 points  (0 children)

itll get harder, dont worry about that

[–]Xerosnake90 1 point2 points  (2 children)

So I went into the first well and found a big dude with a club. I have to beat him to continue don't I?

[–]TheDragonSlayingCat 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Was it the False Knight? You have to beat the False Knight in order to get access to Greenpath.

[–]ThePhantom1247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true

[–]Adzzii_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the best games I've ever played, it's quite difficult at first but if you've played souls games you'll get the hang of it fairly quickly

[–]TrankmanTBurback 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Every time a game like this comes along I think, “Is this the game that finally turns me on to platformers?”

Maybe this time, I hope

[–]ScottUkabella 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's actually less about platforming than it is about exploration and combat. There are a lot of other similar games that focus way more on platforming (ie. Ori and the Blind Forest) - the platforming in Hollow Knight isn't actually that challenging or complicated, except for a few parts near the very late game that are optional.

[–]haynespi87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until you get to the path of pain that is.

[–]G-H-O-S-T 2 points3 points  (4 children)

so weird question.

im planning to 100% this.

the issue is, im planning to completely change the store region i purchase from, and my current one will lose subscription 1st Jan.

should i activate the new ps+ this month (to grab the game) or can i finish hollow knight before then? i read it's a "complete edition" so im expecting lots of content.

one important piece of info is i don't have my ps4 anymore, so the earliest i will be able to play is 19th this month, AND i have an exam on december so i won't be able to binge play much.

[–]ScottUkabella 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Just a word of warning - don't set your heart on being able to 100% this game. The Hall of Gods DLC requires a level of skill and determination that you'll probably need to dedicate dozens of hours to. The final challenge is so ridiculous that I didn't even bother with it, after spending weeks working my way towards it.

[–]TifoASRoma 0 points1 point  (1 child)

theres a invincibility glitch you can do to finish the godhome dlc.

[–]ScottUkabella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, no I've moved on from that chapter of my life.

[–]Shmokermans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can take 100 hours to complete everything I reckon, easily 60 to 80 hours.

I'd wait honestly.

[–]tilfordkage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seems nice, but the combat feels off. Too floaty and bouncy.

[–]jnightx 6 points7 points  (6 children)

one of the best metroidvanias i've played in recent years. enjoyed every second of it, but had one major gripe with the PS4 version. you can't platinum it without doing the ridiculous Pantheon DLC, which has you try and beat all the game's bosses in a row. absolutely insane experience. anyway. got the digital version when it first came out, and purchased the physical collector's edition too.

[–]TifoASRoma 0 points1 point  (5 children)

use the invincibility glitch to plat it

[–]xXAnomiAXx 3 points4 points  (4 children)

How is it worth it if you cheat to get the plat?

[–]TifoASRoma 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Some people have an ocd when it comes to platting a game. Others have lives and don’t have the time to put 100+ hours required to beat all the godhome stuff

[–]xXAnomiAXx 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So you dont have time/skill to earn it the proper way and you think cheating to get it is ok? I couldnt care less about trophys but come on man...

[–]TifoASRoma 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do you care about other peoples trophies?

[–]xXAnomiAXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha no, Im just curious how you justify cheating to yourself.

[–]simonthedlgger 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I got back into gaming this year. After getting blown away by RDR2, I imagined it would be awhile before I played a game rivaling the scope, atmosphere, and overall experience.

My next game was Hollow Knight. Jeez. I could rant and rave but it's all been said. This game is a masterpiece, easily one of my 2-3 all time favorites. Mantis Lords is my favorite boss fight in any game.

[–]HeWhoCntrolsTheSpice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An amazing game that shows how atmospheric a 2D game can be.

[–]The_Capybara_Guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reading these comments made me realize I forgot how hard this game is for new players.

[–]TheDragonSlayingCat 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Here's a little undocumented feature the game doesn't tell you, so most people don't know about it: if you have a charm you want to equip, but you don't have enough slots to equip it, if you try equipping it anyway several times (thrice, I think), then the game will give in and let you equip it anyway. There's a catch: you'll take double damage from enemies until you free up some slots.

[–]BDoooon 11 points12 points  (1 child)

One of the best games on the system. Enjoy it!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the hottest fuckin take possibly ever

I do love the game though

[–]Sharmat 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Cleared the game on the Switch and currently replaying on the PS4. Definitely one of my favorites. It’s really just about pattern recognition and not letting your temper/nerves/reflexes get the best of you (which I suppose can be said for every game lol).

[–]Horror-Combination58 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is there a difference in graphics or performance between the two versions?

[–]Sharmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really noticed any. If there is I can’t say it’s big enough to stand out to me.

[–]iamprateekpandey 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I bought Hollow knight last month but had to give up after 8-9hrs because I am not good at it. Cannot kill the boss in greenpath, died around 20-30times, that was it for me. I really wanted to play this game, I thoroughly enjoyed whatever I played but the only issue was that I suck at such games.

[–]simonthedlgger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hornet? Such a fun fight! I died at least 10 times, probably more, closest I came to dropping the game other than Soul Master.

[–]TheKnees95 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Keep exploring! If you cannot beat someone, move along and continue finding stuff. There's plenty to work with and you can always come back later.

[–]MyBeardsNeck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's so little to explore before you beat Hornet. That's usually good advice but it doesn't apply until later on unfortunately. :/

[–]Irekturmum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first fight with hornet was one of the hardest in the entire game for me. You can do it!

[–]buffofspades 1 point2 points  (5 children)

What's the difference between this version on the version on the Switch? (I own the Switch version already).

[–]TheDragonSlayingCat 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The Voidheart edition contains all of the updates + DLC that was previously released on other platforms (e.g. the Grim Troupe and Godshome). If you have the Switch version + all the DLC, then all the Voidheart edition gives you is trophies.

[–]greg225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Switch version has all that stuff built in as an update, there's no actual 'DLC' in the usual sense.

[–]anagnost 5 points6 points  (1 child)

None

[–]buffofspades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

[–]rusable2rusable2 2 points3 points  (9 children)

Someone tell me when the game clicks. I bought it a year ago, reached the first boss (false knight or smth?) and died like 10 times to him before kind of using a guide to beat him. Then reached the grassy area and even the trash mobs were easily killing me. I gave up around 6 hours in.

[–]michcond 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Greenpath? Try beating the boss at the end of the area.

I'm not going to delve into the spoilers but finishing Greenpath is more or less where the game either clicks for you or it doesn't.

The world will open up a bit after Greenpath and you'll have a bit more freedom.

If you want a more detailed explanation, ask me and I'll send you a PM or something.

[–]rusable2rusable2 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thanks for the explanation, will give it a try from the start again.

[–]michcond 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Do you mean restarting the save file?

My advice is buying the map and waypoint.

You can buy maps from Connifer (or whatever his name was, haven’t played in months) and the waypoint can be bought at Dirtmouth in his wife’s shop.

The map works this way: You buy a map for a specific area, and the map seller obviously hasn’t mapped out every corner yet. I can’t remember if you need to buy a pen or something for writing on the map, but when you sit down on a bench while exploring, you’ll fill out the missing gaps automatically for the parts you’ve been through. Go through an unknown area, sit down, and see what gets added to the map. Again, you need to buy a map for every area if i remember correctly.

The waypoint is a badge you wear that tells you where you are on the map, but it’s not useful when you first enter a new area since you don’t have it mapped out.

Good luck!

Edit:

Also, remember that boss fights are essentially rhythm games. Some moves are telegraphed, and it’s extremely worthwhile to go into the fights the first times without attacking, just to figure out the bosses’ moveset.

[–]rusable2rusable2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the fuckton of information dude! It does help to know some stuff beforehand.

[–][deleted] 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Get ready for a slew of “wow. Just wow. This game is incredible” posts.

[–]danikruces 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I have the physical version, I have more content in the disc edition or in this edition?

[–]agente4242Enter PSN ID 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Does your version says voidheart edition bellow the game's name? If yes then both are the same version.

[–]danikruces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, it doesent say Voidheart edition, but heres the description of Amazon

  • The physical edition of Hollow Knight includes all DLCs/expansions to the original game included in the disc/cartridge.

So... i think is the same version? idk, but thank you so much :)

[–]BitterBubblegum 12 points13 points  (28 children)

I searched 'Hollow Knight difficulty' and the 1st thing I saw was "there are some bosses that may take you hours to beat on your first run".

Is the game really that hard?

[–]TheDragonSlayingCat 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yes. It took me many tries to beat most of the bosses. You can't just go in and cheese them; there are mechanics you must follow and patterns you must memorize if you want to win.

That said, the game is really rewarding, and it really feels good to beat a boss that was giving you trouble. Patience and a never-give-up attitude pays.

[–]simonthedlgger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I stink at video games and typically avoid games with above average difficulty. But I loved the art and music of HK so much that I persisted through some really brutal early game experiences..yet I was never all that frustrated. It's such a well designed game that it does feel like a big victory when you finally beat a boss.

[–]end_or_beginning 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Bought this game in 2018, have been stuck at the watcher knights since. I just can’t beat them no matter how many times I try. But the game is great, the atmosphere and music are some of the best around.

[–]Dolomitex 1 point2 points  (1 child)

the down magic attack (Descending Dark or something?) has some invincibility frames, so you can keep smashing down and then bouncing back up.

[–]end_or_beginning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s one I haven’t tried yet, I’ll give it a go next time I try.

[–]simonthedlgger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got to go with an uber magic build and keep it a 1v1 fight as often as possible. Probably No. 4 or 5 hardest boss for me.

[–]YuriDiAAAAAAAAAAAAA 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Did you knock down the chandelier?

[–]end_or_beginning 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yep, it gets rid of one instantly but I just can’t kill the rest once they start rolling and bouncing, lol.

[–]YuriDiAAAAAAAAAAAAA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get shade cloak and desolate dive? Those two help immensely. Shade soul can often hit both of them a couple times, as well.

[–]BDoooon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Base game is very beatable. The are some dlc bosses that took me days practice to beat.

[–]NoMoreGoldPlz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imagine 80's games but with good controls instead.

Hollow Knight is great!

[–]Seanspeed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's like one step down from a Souls game.

So pretty challenging, but not too bad.

As others are saying, some of the endgame content can be quite brutal, but it's largely all optional. You can still have a very fulfilling time with the game without doing any of that if it's not your thing.

[–]FullmetalEzioLaharke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

real answer here: game is not that hard, what is IMPOSSIBLE is the extra bosses, im pretty sure they are part of the DLC, it like a boss rush type of thing, really really hard and not worth it imo, but the rest of the game is a master piece, hell even the impossible part is a master piece

[–]Goldwood 23 points24 points  (6 children)

It can be, yeah. There were some bosses that took me a bit of trial and error trying to figure out the right charm loadout to defeat them.

But one nice thing is that because of the way the game is designed, if you get stuck on a boss you can go explore a different part of the map. This can open up alternate routes which could lead to other bosses which could give you a new item which could in turn help you defeat the boss you were stuck on.

Great game though, highly recommended.

[–]Roseradeismylady 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I feel like the only hard boss is the Mantis lords After that the bosses are much harder but I feel like I mastered the understanding of the game there

[–]Goldwood 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Traitor lord definitely gave me the hardest trouble. I was about ready to throw in the towel at that point but I came back and beat him eventually.

[–]Dolomitex 1 point2 points  (1 child)

apparently he used to be a complete joke, so they patched him in one of the DLCs to do double damage and be way tougher.

[–]Goldwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was a bit much in my opinion especially because he’s essential to continue past a certain point.

[–]dingdongfootballl 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I still havent beaten Nightmare King Grimm Tried for days and just gave up. Ill come back to it later.

[–]Dolomitex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's a champ, don't give up. each time you fight him, you'll get a little better.

[–]ScottUkabella 12 points13 points  (7 children)

I beat the game last year, and some of the late game bosses are kind of ridiculous. It takes a lot of practice learning attack patterns, basically like you would in a dark souls game. Though I think you probably need faster reaction times than you do in DS. The hardest fight in the game for me was the third gladiator challenge, it took me days of trying and I felt like I was losing my mind, and there's no way in hell I would have spent the amount of time I spent doing that if I didn't love the game as much as I did.

[–]Itsover-9000 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Never beat the third gladiator challenge. I did overcome the hardest DLC boss though which is probably up there as hardest boss I've ever faced. I think some of the endgame spikes in difficulty are too much in Hollow knight ( especially a certain platforming section). But it still managed to be one of my favourite games.

[–]ScottUkabella 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Which boss was that? I think the hardest boss for me was that Zote guy who you fight inside his dream. You fight him a few times and he gets stronger each time, his most difficult stage was probably the boss I spent the most time on. I can still remember the fucking noises he makes.

[–]Itsover-9000 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Nightmare King Grimm, I couldn't even fight zote because I couldn't beat the gladiators lol

[–]ScottUkabella 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Ahhh right, yeah Grimm is really difficult, but he's also the kind of boss that becomes fairly easy once you've 100% memorised his attack pattern. His attacks are easier to predict than a lot of other bosses and it's less a case of needing lightning quick reflexes, than it is just knowing where to stand, when to attack, and what to do to avoid getting hit.

I know a lot of the bosses in this game very intimately because I went for some of the boss run challenges in the Hall of Gods, and actually got through all of them except for the final one which requires you to beat every single boss in the game, one by one without dying. I took one look at that challenge, after spending weeks getting through the other challenges, and decided I was better off just moving on with my life.

[–]TifoASRoma 0 points1 point  (1 child)

if you wanna finish it do the invincibility glitch to get the plat

[–]ScottUkabella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ultimate Hollow Victory.

[–]dingdongfootballl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting PTSD just thinking about that third challenge. Took me days too. That part where the floor drops out and you have to wall jump for a few waves was just ridiculous.
