The AMA is now over.

Well that was a wonderful insight into George’s 50-year career at Anfield. A reminder that in a day or two KopConnect will submit the video of George's AMA to the sub so those who missed it live will get a chance to view it.

https://youtu.be/Sjce-_KBjtU

A tremendous thank you to George Sephton, KopConnect and of course you the users for submitting your questions.

George left this message as he finished:

Thank you for joining me on this AMA, hope to see you back at Anfield soon! YNWA

Hi George, thanks for taking the time to do this. I have two questions:

  1. What is 'Operation Anfield Exercise?
  2. What was the most satisfying goal for you to announce?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Most satisfying goal was Garcia v Chelsea in 2005, just wiped the smile of Joses face. It was worth all the nervousness and the trauma. Not just because it won the game for us, but also because I'm still not convinced it went over the line which makes it all the more special!

Operation Anfield is what would happen if there was a catastrophe going on and we needed to empty the stadium. If we had to operate operation Anfield everyone would be out of the stadium in 2 minutes. Operation Anfield Exercise is where we practice Operation Anfield. Its all for your safety and run by our stewards who are the best in the business!

Hi George,

What's the most you've ever felt Anfield shake?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 49 points50 points  (1 child)

My first response was the say the Barca game in 2019, that was the first time I've ever felt the building shake. Where i sit quite often you'll have thunderous noise, but that night I genuinely thought my room was going to end up on the concrete below, it was frightening! Thinking back, the noise when Scotland played a world cup warm up match at Anfield in the 80's, the noise that night was horrendous! The whole town was full of guys in kilts that had too much to drink and by the time kick off came, it was the sort of noise that makes your ears bleed! As far as LFC matches... the Barca game atmosphere was the pinnacle of everything. The noisiest game in the last 30 or 40 years.

[–]DoubleDeckerz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi George, an honour and a privilege. I have to say I agree with you. When I was watching that game I felt like I was having an outer body experience. It was the perfect example of how much a home atmosphere can effect a game of Football.

I can't wait to hear COMMENCE OPERATION ANFIELD EXERCISE again. Stay safe. YNWA.

[–]James MilnerSlinky_Panther 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Hey George, I assume you get to meet the players - do they ever ask you to say certain things over the loud speaker? What is the oddest thing they've asked you to say?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I can kill this question stone dead i'm afraid, I just don't get to meet the current crew at all! Going back to the 80's and 90's I used to have a lot to do with people like McManaman, Fowler and Redknapp. we used to meet before the game and have a chat, but that's all gone now. Once in a while I'd get a player asking me to play a dedication but 20 years ago they stopped me playing dedications. Sad really, I don't know maybe it well change after my books come out. I don't like it, it's very sad.

[–]Fezthepez 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Have you ever had a blunder when announcing a name, goal etc...if so what was it and did anyone notice?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Let me answer the second part of the question first, if I make a mistake EVERYBODY notices! And... everybody makes time to tell me about it afterwards!

I think the biggest blunder was, one night towards the end of 2000 was when I started announcing goals because before that it was club policy not to. Bill Shankly used to say that if you needed to be told who scored the goal you shouldn't be inside Anfield. Thats debatable but that night, Michael Owen scored 2 goals in the first half and it was just coming up to half time.. I reached under my desk to get the CD for half time and there was a mighty roar... I looked up and saw Owen celebrating with Nick Barmby. I had it in my head it was Barmby who scored but it was actually Owen. I announced Nick Barmby as the scorer! I recently had the chance to apologize to Owen for taking the hattrick off him. I was left with egg on my chin. It was awful.

George , as someone who's seen the best of both Anfields, what's your opinion on safe standing now? Do you think we have the right tools to manage it properly now or is it best left untouched as it is now?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Safe standing, from what I've seen of it around Europe looks brilliant but as a matter of principal, I think back to the time Anfield was made all seater and why it was made all seater (Hillborough). My atitude is very straight forward. If and when the Hillborough families are happy for safe standing to come in, I'll be happy as well.

[–]DoubleDeckerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top bloke. YNWA.

[–]Kolo Touréelmo26 23 points24 points  (2 children)

Hi George, thanks for your part in making Anfield the special place we all know it to be.

Which manager surprised you the most during your time behind the mic?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Thats a strange question!!! The answer is not what you expect, it was probably Roy Hodgson! He obviously was a very experienced manager and I thought he'd work wonders with the talent he had at his disposal. But obviously it all fell flat and poor Roy, lovely bloke, just wasn't a Liverpool manager and that was a real let down.

[–]Kolo Touréelmo26 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If we all look back and be honest with ourselves, I think we can all accept that Roy was never dealt the best hand by the owners.

That being said, he didn't half make a meal of it and was truly out of his depth from day one. Never true Liverpool manager material.

Thank you for donating your time this evening! YNWA.

[–]robert1811 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Hey George. What’s the loudest roar of the Anfield crowd after a goal or loudest bit of atmosphere you’ve ever heard at the stadium?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I had to think about this... It probably was that 4th goal against Barca because it was just surreal what was happening in front of our eyes. When I saw the ball go into the net I didn't react for half a minute, I thought the ref was going to blow the whistle and say take that again. So the roar actually built... but the roar at the end of that game when the final whistle went, it seemed like about 4 hours between that goal and the final whistle. The place ERUPTED! Very few people went home they just had to stay and I banged on YNWa and the atmosphere was great. St Etienne 77, Chelsea 05, fantastic. But Barcelona... if anything ever surpasses that I'll be very pleased to be there.

[–]Distant_Forklift 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Hi George, across your career has a player ever taken issue with your pronunciation of their name? Many modern commentators and pundits seem to pronounce certain players' names differently and I’m curious whether any Liverpool players requested a certain pronunciation from you?

Thank you for doing this AMA.

[–]George_Sephton[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Pleasure to do the AMA!

The answer to that one is no! One of the skills of me getting the names right over the years is from when I went to school I did Latin, Spanish and Russian would you believe! Spanish and Russian have given me a good insight on how to pronounce a lot of names so I've not often had much trouble. i always tell the same story, the worst night I had a Anfield was '76. We played a Greek team. In those days I didn't get a squad list I just had the match program with 11 names on it. That night the program turns up with the names, and I STRUGGLED through that game. It was awful!

[–]54’ GerrardDancerTheDrummer 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Hi George congrats on 50 years service to the club!

Over that 50 years how have the crowds changed or is there anything that you notice crowds doing more is the atmosphere just as intense as it was those years back?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the congratulations!

Yes, I've realised over the last couple of years that the atmosphere is as good as it ever was, but it used to get going very quickly. When I started working there there'd be a queue round the block to get in about 3 hours before kick off maybe more! If we were playing United or Everton the gates would open very early. Quite often I'd be in the stand at kick off exhausted because we'd have had noise for the last 2 and a half 3 hours! Nowadays people turn up to Anfield with a piece of paper in their pocket that say they're going to get in and where you are going to sit. You don't have to worry about fighting your way to get in. Take your time, in you go! 20 mins before kick off the place is quite often half empty, and not as noisy as its going to get. Not long after kick off you suddenly realise the wall of sound is out there! The atmosphere is definitely as good as it ever was, just not for as long basically.

[–]arisefromtheashes 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Hi George, if you could rewatch one game again live, which one would it be?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's a tricky one! Obviously Barca 4-0 would be fantastic but I don't think my blood pressure would stand it. It would be nice to watch chelseas UCL semi again knowing the result as it was probably my most stressful night ever as we were on the verge of getting through to a final for the first time in 20 years. It was 0-0 from the first leg, we scored a goal I still think probably wouldnt have stood if we'd have had VAR but WHO CARES! Watching that last 25 minutes again knowing we were going through would be great. People say Chelsea threw everything at us and I swear I saw a kitchen sink fly through the air at one stage! We got through and if I close my eyes I can still see Joses face.. he was NOT a happy fan, not that he ever is... but we were through to the final in istanbul and thats ALL that mattered.

[–]Manedingo 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Has there ever been a time you’ve struggled getting the words out, be it something emotional or too hard to prevent yourself laughing?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I cant recall that ever happening. I appear to have the gift of sounding professional at all times! Apart from when we beat Olympiakos on the way to Istanbul I went hysterical when Gerrard scored the goal that kept us in the competition. I'll quote the old saying about the swan gliding across the water while underneath his legs a peddling frantically. That's probably me.

[–]555HAM 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Hi George!

Thanks for doing this! How do you keep your voice so calm when announcing massive goals? I do remember Gerrard vs Olympiakos. Couldn’t quite contain that one! I can hear it vividly now!

[–]George_Sephton[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I really don't know! Sometimes its difficult. Over the years I've just got used to it. LFCTV did a half hour interview with me a few years ago. Peter played that Olympiakos goal when I was in hysterics over the PA system as we were on our way out of the competition and we were absolutely desperate to get through.

[–]BOOM!💥MissSlothEyes 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Hi George, in your opinion, who was the best rival player you ever seen play at anfield?

[–]George_Sephton[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's got to be Messi. It would have been nice to see him when it wasn't important for us to beat him, but just watching him in action was an absolute privilege. He's a treat to watch.

[–]Mike81890 11 points12 points  (2 children)

How do you feel about Operation Anfield Exercise? I vividly remember my first trip to Anfield, hearing you announce that, and wondering what the hell it meant.

As an out-of-country fan, it's always an extra pleasure to get to hear your voice whenever I'm lucky enough to make the trip!

[–]stadiofriuli 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey George, thanks for checking in over here.

Who’s the best player you’ve ever watched gracing the pitch at Anfield and why’s it Nat Phillips?

[–]oeparsons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would be great to hear what's it usually like for you watching the game from your booth. Is anyone else up there with you? Do you have much to do in between goal/substitution announcements or are you able to watch the match and enjoy it?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello George,

hope you are doing well.

What got you into the announcer business, and over your 50 years, has anything gotten you close to quitting (besides personal life/health reasons)?

Thanks YNWA

[–]JmanVere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi George, thank you for doing this! Couple of questions:

  • How did you first get the job of announcing at Anfield?
  • Which player's name has been the most fun to announce over the speakers?

[–]DoubleDeckerz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi George, thanks for all the great work you've done over the years. I have a very simple question:

Who makes the best cuppa in Anfield and why is it James Milner?

[–]Post_Coconut_Clarity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi George, thank you for doing this.

What was your reaction when Shankly retired? And what was the atmosphere like within the club as the news filtered through?

[–]APXO97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi George.

What were the top 3 most memorable games you’ve been a part of ever since you had the job?

[–]NT07 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi George!! What’s the most iconic Liverpool goal you’ve commentated on live?

[–]nicolascagevampire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi George, what is the best goal in Anfield that you have witnessed?

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

[deleted]

    [–]George_Sephton[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first one, probably Steve Finnan. Not a spectacular player but he just did his job, without arguing. Very straightforward guy, did what he had to do. Not in the same PR bracket as the rest of the team. After he left he refused to attend any reunions. I had a lot of time for him

As for overrated! Hard to say... if you're in the team then you must be good enough to play for Liverpool therefore you cannot be overrated. Saying that, Mario Ballotelli.. he overrated himself if no-one else did as he thought he was a superstar. The Zlatan of his day, gods gift to football and it turns out... he wasn't.

    [–]Hangryer_dan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi George, firstly I just want to thankyou for your amazing work over the years. Your voice is synonymous with some of the best memories I have shared with my Dad, whenever I'm back at Anfield I hear your voice and it takes me back to being an 8 year old.

    Question wise:

I was at Anfield for the final Premier league match last March and the feeling was quite surreal. What were your feelings around the Bournemouth and Atletico match? It must have been a surreal experience for someone who has seen just about everything else in the clubs history.

Secondly, what on earth is operation Anfield exercise?

    [–]Pliny_Harris 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this George, hopefully we’ll all be back in Anfield soon enough.

Question is, what’s the best opposition team (& player) that you’ve seen come up against us?

Opposition for me was Barcelona when we played them in the CL group stage in 2001 I think it was. They beat us 3-1 and I just remember them being sensational. And that was our treble team too, so no slouches.

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi George. Hope you're keeping safe. My question is: What's the loudest atmosphere you've ever heard at a game at Anfield?

    [–]Medogsonfire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi George ! What’s the most embarrassing moment you’ve ever experienced being the voice of anfield?

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

    Hi George,

What would you say to the younger fans and what advice would you give them?

    [–]George_Sephton[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The first advice is if you can possibly get to Anfield for a game... do it! If anyone has never been inside Anfield then they have no idea what its like until you've been there during a game and drank in all the atmosphere.

Keep your eyes open, take in the history. There's plenty of good LFC history books for you to learn about the club.

Last thing i'll say is just be glad you're a red!

    [–]GameOfThrowInsMate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to a fair few games in my life at Anfield but that Barca come back sat at the back of the kop tops every game I’ve ever been to. I still get chills thinking about it. In fact just typing this I got chills on the back of my neck. What a night and what a game.

    [–]ishanwelde 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi George, am I right in saying you were the mastermind behind playing Imagine after the Barca game at Anfield? Genuinely saw grown men (including me) burst into tears, could not have been a more perfect moment. Thanks for that, will never forget it.

    [–]RyanIsKickAss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Who have been some of your favorite players to watch over the years?

Follow up, are there any players you feel are/were underappreciated by the fans?

    [–]Darwin NúñezR3w45 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How is the atmosphere at Anfield compared to let's say a decade ago? And when have you heard the stadium at its loudest? Thank You Sir !

    [–]IIMonuII 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Which players name did you enjoy reading out the most after a goal had been scored?

    [–]Hassassin7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congrats on 50 years at Anfield!
If you somehow found yourself in the changing room before a super important match and had to put on one song to get the players pumped up, what song would it be? And have you ever had any memorable encounters with players or managers (our own and opposition).

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How hard is it to announce things professionally and calmly in a moment like ‘corner taken quickly ORIGIIIIIII!!!!!!’? Surely you just want to yell ‘get innnnnnnnnnnnnn’ into the microphone 😂

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey George, is there any particular behind the scenes memory or story that sticks out?

Hoping it won't be long till we're all back at Anfield and get to hear you work again!

    [–]Kloppite1892 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can you just simply describe what it was like to be at the 4-0 vs Barcelona? Thank you

    [–]_Random_Username_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi George. What's your favourite Anfield memory?

    [–]Egyptian King 👑Craft-Superb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi Mr Sephton Thank you for doing this. I have a few questions feel free to chose the ones you like:

-How did you get your start in this job, and what have you done to keep you successful/consistent in it for such a long time?

-Who’s been your favorite person (player, coach, staff, etc) you’ve worked with?

-If you were to go back and give your younger self some advice what would it be?

-Lastly, what’s your Matchday routine like? Any superstitions or traditions?

    Thanks again

    [–]aprotos12 0 points1 point  (2 children)

When did you become a Liverpool fan? What was the moment or moments that sealed the deal?

    [–]George_Sephton[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

You don't become a Liverpool fan where I come from... you are BORN a Liverpool fan. It's almost 100 years since my dad had a trial for Liverpool. My family is Red through and through. There's was never any don't, it was like do you want to breath oxygen or not.

    [–]aprotos12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response!! I have friends from Liverpool who are Everton fans. I think it is the family argument that makes sense to me. Again thanks

    [–]Pyramid_Pele_11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi George, You have probably had the longest experience of "You'll Never Walk Alone" from the Kop and the Anfield Faithful. After all these years does it still have the mesmerizing, magical and moving effect on you? And of course, which European Night was the most Special? Thank you, and here's to another 50 Years!!!! ***YNWA***

    [–]theuntold100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi George! Congrats on 50 years at Liverpool FC.

I believe you said after the semi final against Chelsea in 2005 that it was the greatest atmosphere you'd ever experienced at Anfield. What are your memories about the day and the match itself?

    [–]LateRegistrxtion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    Hi George,

Do you think the sport is being taken away from the fans with all the dramatic changes over the last few decades, and with the proposed future changes, e.g. European Super League?

    [–]NLF7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alright George! I know it doesn’t quite go as mental up there in your box as it does on the Kop. Have you ever had any “I wish I was in the stands right now” moments? If so, when?

    [–]ZionicLimits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    Hi George!

I was wondering what the hardest thing you've had to announce is? (strictly football related, such as a certain player scoring against us etc..)

    [–]UpTheMightyReds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi George, what’s it been like the past year without fans in the ground? It must be very strange after being part of it for so long

    [–]0706 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not including games, what’s been your favourite Anfield memory?

    [–]Edolas93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi George, given your job you have been involved in some incredible highs and some horrible lows with the club with which you very likely had to announc to all at Anfield. Which footballing moment gave you the most joy to announce to those at Anfield and which left you feeling the worst having to announce?

Hope you are keeping well. Your voice booming around Anfield announcing the teams was the true wakeup call to a young me attending my first match, you played a huge part in making me fully acknowledge where I was so thank you for being such an important part in the early days of my love for football.

    [–]Bob Paisleyexpatred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi George! Just wanted to say it’s a real privilege having you do an AMA. What era did you enjoy the quality of the songs at Anfield, both the ones you played and the ones you heard. Cheers and YNWA.

Hi George, thank you for doing this. I am not really good im expressing myself, however I can say, because of Covid I really missing you doing the anfield exercise announcement.

Anyway, I would like to know how Covid-19 affecting the life of a match announcer when there's no people around and the atmosphere not really as the same.

        Thanks.

Dear George, of all the local bands that you've played in your pre-match DJ-ing, is there one that went on to do great things that you're particularly proud to have played while they were still relatively unknown? Keep well and safe, and thank you for all you've done for Liverpool Football Club! (P.S. Do you like my username?)

        [–]bremmmc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi George, congrats on 50 years!
Which opposition player has gotten the loudest cheer at Anfield when announced pre-game?
If that question is a bit too hard to remember, which opposition had the loudest fans at Anfield (excluding Everton as they basically at home)?

        [–]Rustedfromtherain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi george, massive respect for the job you’ve done for so long and with such passion

My question is: have you ever had any requests from opposition teams and if so did you go through with it or decline ?

        [–]scottboy34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi George, do you remember calling out my name for my birthday on the 27/10/96 because it made my year! 2-1 win against Derby County. All the best YNWA

        [–]H0wsMyDriving 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the AMA, George! I’m new to Liverpool FC, but I love the energy and togetherness Liverpool tries to promote amongst the players and fans. Is there a definitive moment where you distinctly remember that feeling of loyalty in Anfield? Hope you have a good day!

Hi George, thanks for doing this- my question is what’s the most exciting game you’ve ever witnessed at Anfield?

        [–]Greek Scousereiloana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hiya George. Is there any funny moment on the pitch you've commented on the sticks out in your mind?

        [–]nairbuoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, congratulations on working at the same place for 50 years! I'm guessing only a select few folks in the world would ever get to spend that long at an organization and having gotten the opportunity to do so at Anfield must be nothing short of special. Truly envious of your career! :D

My question, having seen the rise and fall of the club through different decades, how have you seen the supporters mindset and connection to the team change? Especially the faithful that keep coming to Anfield, have the demographics of the folks who come regularly changed? Eg. The composition of the crowd must've changed from 100% merseysiders to more outside representation. Am curious to how that has affected your job too, as the Voice of Anfield, given the changing crowd composition.

        Cheers! And YNWA!

Hi George! I was wondering whether managers have a certain impact on the crowd at Anfield. For example, do some managers have a more lasting impression on the stadium than others or is it mostly up to the players and results of the game? All the best!

Hello George, hope you're doing well.

I know you get plenty of recommendations for music to play on match days, aside from You'll Never Walk Alone, what have been your favourite songs to play over the years?

        [–]tabatux7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

George! Hello! Do you do any particular vocal exercises or routines to help keep you ‘fit’ for the job? Or do you just roll out of bed and go about your day? Thank you again for your time and all the best!

Hi George, What's your take opinion on Liverpool supporters from other countries attending games at Anfield?I ask because I've had some weird experiences, been called a wool and told to go back to Germany.

Hey George! Hey how are you?

You’ve seen the club in some of the best moments, and through some of our worst. If you had to pick a favorite season, which would it be?

        And how about a worst?

        Cheers!
