552.22 WHQL Driver Early Performance Benchmark (Ampere based)

Greetings all,

This is my second early analysis of an nvidia driver, and as such, it will be the first reference I will have to guide us in future versions. This will be something totally voluntary, so that you can be guided in some way, do not take it as something absolute because each PC configuration is a totally different world, so I will try to make it as global as possible (referring e.g. to the configuration of a game).

Is it worth updating the driver for my current GPU? This is a recurring question from many gamers and PC users. The general rule suggests updating our GPU drivers to the latest version, as it ensures that we get the latest bug fixes, security updates, optimizations for most of the latest AAA games, and support for the newest features.

However, it does not guarantee the best raw performance (average FPS numbers) and frametime stability (1% and 0.1% average low/integral FPS or P1 and P0.2 FPS percentile numbers). Comparative performance analyses of GPU drivers are useful because they allow us to reliably validate and estimate significant improvements or regressions in graphics performance attributable to changes in the driver version.

PC specs are: custom desktop with Windows 10 v22H2 (latest Windows Update patches applied), 16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM (2x8), SSD NVME 1 TB, Intel i7-10700k, ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3070 OC, Single HDC 4K 60 Hz monitor (no HDR or G-Sync). Factory clocks on CPU and GPU. Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS for short) is disabled. Resizable BAR is disabled. NVCP Global Settings (default).

Frame Times are recorded using PresentMon during the built-in benchmark run inside each game. Each benchmark is run initially four times, and the first result is discarded. Outliers results, with more than 5% variance in any of my used metrics from the average, are also discarded and repeated.

To the methodology, I have decided to add a Non-Synthetic Benchmarks, in this case Unigine Benchmark. For each installation of each subsequent version of a driver, the installation will be performed in a clean option. In case of any problems, DDU will be used for the complete cleanup. When installing each driver, the only option I will not enable will be GeForce Experience.

This initial commentary will be updated as we make more exhaustive analyses with different games.

Also, I apologize if I don't have games of recent date, since I don't have the possibility to buy them at the moment due to the economic situation in my country Argentina.

EDITs

01: re-run the respective games and unigine

Thanks and good luck! Fingers crossed for a good performing driver 😃

[–]Independent_Arg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At first glance, it looks like a pretty solid driver that recovered quite close to the reference driver (537.58). We'll take a look at more games in the coming days :)

[–]Veganarchy-Zetetic[🍰] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Riftbreaker performance doesnt look good on the new driver.

[–]Independent_Arg 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Obviously it is possible that there may be fps differences, but in my opinion losing or gaining 2 fps is not a big difference to really tell if it is a good driver or not. Since in between there can be many things that influence.

[–]PlutusPleion4070 | i5-13600KF | W11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't the significant drop in .1% lows cause concern for stuttering though?

[–]yoadknux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least they fixed the Superposition benchmark drop

[–]Ok-Replacement-7217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than the odd Superposition benchmark scores, the 552.12 driver would seem to be the best option.
Also, you are running Win 10, I think the majority are on Win 11 at this stage, especially with EOL and paid options being proposed by Microsoft for those wishing to remain on Win 10 due to hardware limitations or personal preference.
I'm sticking with 552.12 as it's been a solid driver since I've been running it since release. No problems.
Thanks for your time in doing these runs.

[–]JoonasD6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that *thank you* for providing some non-AAA-recent games! These are good real-life loads. :) Yay for AoE2:DE!

[–]Mastercry -1 points0 points  (9 children)

Have you testing with nvidia overlay enabled? I did today test this new driver on 4060Ti with nvidia overlay disabled for 1st time and gave me 92 FPS in Cyberpunk benchmark. I had 86 FPS before but I never disabled nvidia overlay so im confused if this increased my performance.

And yes how u mentioned everyone must be aware that testing new drivers must wait few days for conclusions because they re cache all shaders.

So far im happy with this driver, if is +1 fps its + :D better than before when i always had -

[–]GodOfWine- 0 points1 point  (4 children)

the newer overlay from the nvidia app doesn't have that problem btw, i had this problem with a few games with GFE overlay now i can actually use a better overlay with nvidia app.

[–]ntpeters 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I suppose it's just another thing that's inconsistent between machines then. Because I see framerate drops when I have the overlay enabled with the new nVidia app. In Cyberpunk specifically it's at least 10 fps average drop, with lows dipping a bit more. Can reproduce reliably by enabling/disabling the overlay.

[–]GodOfWine- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gonna rerun it on my end, will let you know results

[–]GodOfWine- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reran runs here, no significant difference on my end all runs around 80fps with the game, no overlay on in the app ran 3 times "restarted each time", overlay on in app but not showing ran 3 times no change, and last 3 runs were overlay showing stats 3 runs with no change... i did have the same issue you are describing when i have the game filters and photomode option enabled tho, i run this setting off as i just like the stats toggle and no performance hit "could not turn those off in geforce experience".

[–]Mastercry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I ran Cyberpunk bench 2 times with disabled 99fps(dlss on quality). Then I enabled overlay and run it 2 times 92fps(same settings)... idk what to think. Sadly when I was using 537.58 I never disabled Overlay to test. It just came to my mind now when im using latest driver. Im now curious if in 537 ver also made performance worse. But also I think in some benchmarks it makes no difference (im not sure about that tho)

[–]Independent_Arg 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't have any active nvidia overlays, as GeForce Experience is uninstalled and the NVIDIA App Beta I decided not to install as it is not something stable at this time.

[–]Mastercry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk what to do. Im so tired of changing drivers. This latest driver only place that gives good performance is cyberpunk when disable Nvidia overlay, 7fps more when disabled.

In Unigine Heaven and Superposition performance is terrible tho(at least 5fps lower i think, ran them 5-10 times). Nvidia overlay doesn't make difference here it seems.

In wow TBC i didn't had GSync working for some reason i needed to add the game in optimization list in nvcp but there it says not supported. GSync is working after i added it tho. But first two times when started TBC it was stuck at 64fps for some reason. Smells like bug.

Anyway i don't like this driver already. I think tomorrow will put 537 and will never try new driver again.

Next time im going back to AMD. Im tired of this crap, so overrated Nvidia team which decrease my performance with each new driver

[–]Snydenthur 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If it gains/loses a couple of fps or so, I could say it's just benchmark noise. But if it loses nearly half the fps for min fps, it's not a good driver.

[–]Mastercry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ITS NOT "just benchmark noise". its not margin of error or whatever it come to your mind when u test it 10-20-30 times u know each scene what fps is getting and at the end when u tested 10+ times you know how much as max is reaching. Thats for Heaven. This new driver is -5fps on avarage in Heaven for me, same in Superposition where is even more clear. Everyone can make own conclusions. Its benchmark so there is no gurantee that in games will be same. But usually its the right sign in which direction the drivers are going.

The fact that Nvidia Overlay "consumes" 7FPS is fuckin crazy (in Cyberpunk)

[–]kachunkachunk4090, 2080Ti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to be able to use DLDSR for my other 1440p non-HDR monitors, and RTX HDR on my 4k monitor. Not quite holding my breath for this, but I hope they're working on what you're asking for.

[–]Netrex44 34 points35 points  (0 children)

And a real gamma 2.2 fix

[–]madmk2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every time a driver update drops i get excited, surely this is the one right? RIGHT? PLEASE

[–]RufusVulpecula7800x3d | 2x32 GB 6200 cl30 | Rtx 4090 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I can't believe how hard it is for nvidia to consider multi monitor setups for once.

[–]ImpulsePie 0 points1 point  (2 children)

multi monitor rtx hdr support?

Yeah patiently waiting this official implementation, although I've been able to force it to work with Nvidia Profile Inspector and the Profile Inspector XML from here: https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/781?tab=files

[–]lolDayus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

mind posting what that NVPI settings section looks like? like I changed the entries for

$00432F84: TrueHDR flags (required for NVTrueHDR) -- set to Enabled (Medium) and

$1077A11A: Unknown (required for NvTrueHDR) -- toggled to On. Then there's two lines between them that were already toggled On by default

[–]ImpulsePie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

This is what i have mine set to. I use Low Quality as the higher settings have an aggressive debanding filter (for more detail see https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1b3fds4/rtx\_hdr\_can\_destroy\_fine\_picture\_detail/)

My settings work out to 55 for middle gray and 993 peak brightness. Can override this in other individual game profiles. Easy to set in the NVIDIA beta app for a game, read the settings from profile inspector and then copy/paste the values onto the base profile or other game profiles and go from there

Thanks for putting this out there.

Apparently, my 14700KF isn’t affected by this as I don’t get the out of video memory issue. I’ve put 180 hours into Tekken 8 and received no crashes. T8 seems to be heavily affected by this issue as a new UE5 game, so check the demo if you’re concerned you may be affected.

Also worth mentioning that (while I also wasn’t getting crashes before adjusting these settings), setting a voltage offset of 0.03v and the PL1 and PL2 values to 175w on my CPU reduced temps by a lot.

Hope this also helps someone out there.

[–]SpockBauru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a temporary fix that I'm using for the checkerboard issue on Edge and Chrome.

For Microsoft Edge:

  • Create a shortcut on the the taskbar.
  • On the shortcut, right click -> right click (again) on the name -> Properties
  • On "Target", add at the end: --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess,DCompPresenter --disable-direct-composition

Example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess,DCompPresenter --disable-direct-composition

For Google Chrome:

  • Create a shortcut on the the taskbar.
  • On the shortcut, right click -> right click (again) on the name -> Properties
  • On "Target", add at the end: --disable_direct_composition_video_overlays=1

Example: "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable_direct_composition_video_overlays=1

Notes

  • 552.22 adds application profiles for DirectStorage's GpuDecompressionBenchmark and BulkLoadDemo, benchmark results with previous drivers may not be directly comparable

  • 552.12 adds game profile for Gray Zone Warfare, just not listed in release notes

  • NVGPUCOMP64.dll and/or 'out of VRAM' crashes, not a driver issue - see 'Troubleshooting and Workarounds' section

  • Windows 11 Insider Build (Canary) 26080 or later removes support for some Windows legacy features e.g. forced Windows 10 Task Bar and may result in black screen at login. The black screen at login isn't a Nvidia driver issue. Some third party Windows applications that force/rely on legacy features are also impacted. Reset any Windows 11 OS 'legacy tweaks' to default

  • NVIDIA WhisperMode "Not Ready" issue, see FAQ at https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5538/

  • Nvidia App (BETA) may impact frame rates (?CPU bound scenarios?) on some systems, this isn't a Nvidia driver issue

  • Security Bulletin issues updated by Nvidia on 28th February 2024 are addressed by 551.61 (Maxwell, Pascal, Ampere, Lovelace) and later drivers - https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5520

  • Chromium based applications checkerboard pattern artifacts is a Microsoft issue (thanks pidge2k and Independent_Arg)

  • 'RTX Video HDR' is supported for all RTX GPUs in 551.23 and later drivers. 'RTX Video Super Resolution' is supported for all RTX GPUs in 545.84 and later drivers

  • Shader cache locations have been updated for 545.37 or newer drivers - %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\NVIDIA\PerDriverVersion\DXCache and %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\NVIDIA\PerDriverVersion\GLCache

Resizable Bar (ReBAR) Support

No ReBAR additions / change since the previous driver

NOTE that 551.23 or later drivers omit ReBAR flags Options and/or Size in some ReBAR game profiles and add new ReBAR compatibility flag(s). Discussion of the changes and a complete list of ReBAR enabled games/applications for this driver can be found in the subcomment at https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1c5g77o/game_ready_studio_driver_55222_faqdiscussion/kzu4b6a/

35 unique profiles out of 6870 profiles in the driver have official ReBAR support enabled, however restrictions may apply based on CPU platform:

  • Intel CPU based platforms have ReBAR disallowed for F1 2021, F1 2022, Hitman 3 and Horizon Zero Dawn

  • AMD CPU based platforms have no restrictions, all 35 unique profiles are supported

Troubleshooting and Workarounds

  • NVGPUCOMP64.dll and/or 'out of VRAM' crashes (shader compilation), check CPU clock/voltage/multipliers etc, particularly if system has an Intel 13th or 14th gen CPU - https://www.radgametools.com/oodleintel.htm and https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/Regarding-Reports-of-13th-14th-Gen-Unlocked-Desktop-Users/td-p/1575863

  • NVLDDMKM / TDR / Stability issues, if troubleshooting (re-evaluating RAM/CPU/GPU overclocks voltage timings, disabling PCI Express Link State Power Management/PCI Express ASPM (PCH)/PCI Express Clock Power Gating in BIOS, testing with Nvidia Debug Mode, testing Powersupply [PSU] e.g set to Single Rail, disabling Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling setting, disabling Windows hibernation/fast startup, disabling Low Level Driver options in Afterburner/PrecisionX etc) hasn't helped try a driver considered by the community as stable/consistent

  • Drivers 512.95, 516.94, 517.48, 522.25, 526.86, 528.49, 532.34, 537.58, 538.42 are considered stable/consistent by the community. While driver branches based on r530/r535/r545 and early r550 mainline currently have the most reported issues, versions 536.99, 537.13, 537.42, 546.17(W10), 551.23(W10), 551.52, 551.86 are worth trying despite issues

  • Performance dropping significantly in all games after installing a driver, see https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5408/

  • Laptop users with major stutter/framerate issues when running games with official ReBAR support, try setting flag 0x00e942fe to 1 in the game's profile (DirectX) / flag 0x20feaf0d to 1 in the game's profile (Vulkan) OR disable ReBAR in Nvidia's game profile OR use Hybrid GPU mode rather than Discrete GPU mode

  • DPC Latency spikes, if drivers 536.67 and later haven't resolved the issue try potential workaround(s) in subcomment

  • Display blinking/temporary blackout, try setting 'Content Type Detection' in 'Nvidia Control Panel > Display > Adjust Desktop Colour Settings' to 'Desktop Programs' if setting is available AND/OR adjust monitor/TV's display settings for auto-content detection AND/OR check for a display firmware update AND/OR reset display to default settings in OSD AND/OR avoid triggering Display Stream Compression (DSC) AND/OR disable display 'HDMI Consumer Electronics Control' (CEC) AND/OR disable 'AMD Instant Game Response' on LG displays

  • NIS (Nvidia Image Scaling) this driver still has an 8% to 10% NIS performance penalty on Maxwell/Pascal based GPUs. Workaround is available for Maxwell/Pascal based cards: https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/tkca3g/game_ready_studio_driver_51215_faqdiscussion/i1sod9e/

EDITs

01: tested 'NIS (Nvidia Image Scaling)' on Pascal/Maxwell GPUs

02: updated branch information

03: updated Resizable Bar (ReBAR) Support with profile counts

04: added to notes, GpuDecompressionBenchmark, BulkLoadDemo, Gray Zone Warfare

DPC Latency Spikes

If drivers 536.67 and later haven't resolved the issue try one or more of the following potential workaround(s):

  • Enable Message Signaled Interrupts (MSI / MSI-X) for the Nvidia HDMI Audio and Nvidia GPU instances using MSI Utility v3 i.e. those reported with 'Instance ID' starting PCI\VEN_10DE. Don't change interrupt priorities, leave then as 'undefined' and just tick MSI mode setting (reboot computer after change)

  • Disable both 'PEG - ASPM' / 'PCI Express Clock Gating' (credit Astyanax) if supported in the motherboard BIOS

  • Disable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) in Windows settings. May help with DPC Latency on some systems but impacts Series 40 (Lovelace) DLLS3 Frame Generation feature and AMD's FSR3 Frame Generation feature

  • Set Nvidia's 'Power Management Mode' to 'Prefer Maximum Performance' in the Nvidia Control Panel for each application/game impacted (not globally)

  • Force higher VRAM clocks for idle GPU States (P8/P5) using a tool such as the official Nvidia System Management Interface (SMI) tool OR the unofficial Nvidia Power Management Tool

  • Disable 'Interrupt Moderation' in Ethernet / Network Interface Card (NIC) settings, when enabled this can negatively contribute to system DPC latency as well as network packet latency

  • ASMedia USB 3.0 Controller driver. In Device Manager replace ASMedia driver with Microsoft's 'xHCI Host Controller USB driver', after install they will show as 'ASMedia USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller (Microsoft)'

All I need is a solution to DSC blinking in a triple screen Surround + G-Sync configuration. For now I'm stuck on what seems to be a dead branch that doesn't support the current NVENC API so I'm also stuck on an old release of OBS.

[–]m_w_h 9 points10 points  (1 child)

If not already done for this driver, please submit a report to Nvidia stating the issue and any steps to reproduce - official report form and display issue guidance in collecting logs for display issues

[–]isochromanoneEVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wasn't aware of that reporting option. Thanks, will do.

You pointed me to a great driver a couple of months ago that's been almost perfect but now it's starting to be not supported by applications.

[–]noerc 6 points7 points  (8 children)

I pretty much got entirely rid of black screen flickering in my 3x4K surround setup with G-Sync by doing the following (can't tell for sure if all of it is required):

  • set refresh rate to 144Hz. also make sure that this setting is still active after reboot, nvidia likes to reset it to something lower for me.

  • hard cap FPS to 140 FPS in nvidia settings globally. this has to be redone after reboot if the driver changed the refresh rate to something lower as described in the previous point. alternatively, set the cap for each game individually, which doesn't get reset.

  • set "V rate" range limits and FreeSync range in CRU to 60 - 140 Hz

  • remove as many resolutions as possible in SRE. i only have 3840x2160, 2560x1440 and 1920x1080 active. this has to be redone after every driver update, but you can save the settings into a file and import it.

Thanks for that input.

I did the same first two items as you plus set my monitors to DP 1.2.

I have 3x1440p 165 Hz monitors (with latest firmware). I tried forcing to 144, capping global to 142 fps, set max game framerate to 142 fps.

I didn't try the last two bullets though. I'll ponder that after I generate a report for Nvidia.

How are you running 3x4k at 144hz? If I enable 138hz overclock on my PG42UQ's, DSC will cut my outputs. The most I can run is 2 screens at 4k 138hz. It disables 2 outputs on my 4090 when I go over 4k120 on 2 screens.

[–]noerc 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Can't tell why it doesn't work for you, but my 4090 has no issues providing 3x4K with 144Hz to three LG 32GQ950P-B monitors via DisplayPort (using DSC of course), aside from the black screen flickering issue when G-Sync is enabled. Maybe check your cables.

Man that is crazy. I’ve tried a ton of different cables with no luck. I’m stuck at 3x4k 120hz on my sim racing rig. Those extra couple hz would be nice.

[–]jenders3713900K | 4090 | 32GB DDR4-3600 -1 points0 points  (3 children)

I even just found nvidia stating that 4k with dsc is limited to 2 screens so I’m baffled how this is working for you, and jealous. Haha.

[–]noerc 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Not sure if it helps but I am using CableDirect 8K DisplayPort cables

https://www.amazon.com/CableDirect-DisplayPort-I-S-Shielding-Certification/dp/B07HL7RSRW?th=1

of course as long as necessary and as short as possible. My GPU is the ASUS TUF 4090, although I don't see how that would make any difference. TBH I never thought that this could possibly not work, but in fact after googling it many people report issues with that configuration. Good luck figuring it out.

[–]jenders3713900K | 4090 | 32GB DDR4-3600 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks. I really don’t see a resolution. I’ve tried high end 1.4 cables, dp2.1 40gbps cables, fiber optic even, nothing. Just a limitation of the card apparently with how it handles dsc. Hopefully 5000 series will be dp 2.1 so it shouldn’t be an issue anymore.

Do you guys have HDMI 2.1 on your monitors? I use my LG 27GR83Q-B which has full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 with my 4070, in attempt to work around having any DSC active at all. I can't tell if it is or isn't active, but full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 should be a long ways off activating compression for 1440P 240Hz as I run.

ReBAR Notes and Observations:

551.23 or later drivers omit ReBAR flags Options and Size in some ReBAR game profiles. Nvidia have streamlined ReBAR profiles to only include changes to defaults e.g.

  • 'Cyberpunk 2077' only has ReBAR Feature flag meaning driver defaults used for Options and Size

  • 'Red Dead Redemption 2' has ReBAR flags Feature, Options and Size, no defaults are used

  • 'Deathloop' has ReBAR flags Feature and Size meaning driver default used for Options

A new flag 0x00e942fc disables ReBAR for Intel CPU based platforms rather than using the Options flag. ReBAR is disabled in a number of game profiles for Intel CPU based platforms due to a ReBAR issue with some Intel motherboard chipsets that results in detrimental performance.

Flag 0x00e942fe(DirectX) is still present as a workaround for laptop ReBAR issues in some ReBAR profiles. Hotfix driver 551.46 added a Vulkan specific flag 0x20feaf0d as a workaround for laptop ReBAR issues

The original ReBAR flags Feature and Size can still be used to enable/adjust ReBAR for unsupported titles. Leave Options at default for now.

A complete list of all ReBAR enabled applications and games follows, additions for this driver (if any) are in bold:

  • Assassin's Creed Mirage
  • Assassin's Creed Valhalla
  • Battlefield V
  • Borderlands 3
  • Control
  • Company of Heroes 3
  • Cyberpunk 2077 Laptop workaround present for DirectX ReBAR issue
  • Dead Space (Remake)
  • Deathloop
  • Diablo 4
  • DiRT 5
  • Dying Light 2 Stay Human
  • F1 2020 DX12
  • F1 2021 Not enabled for Intel CPU Platforms
  • F1 2022 Not enabled for Intel CPU Platforms
  • F1 23
  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Forza Horizon 5
  • Gears of War 5
  • Godfall
  • Halo Infinite
  • Hitman 2
  • Hitman 3 Not enabled for Intel CPU Platforms AND laptop workaround present for DirectX ReBAR issue
  • Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition Laptop workaround present for DirectX ReBAR issue
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition Not enabled for Intel CPU Platforms
  • Lords of the Fallen (2023)
  • Metro Exodus including Enhanced Edition Laptop workaround present for DirectX ReBAR issue
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 Laptop workaround present for DirectX and Vulkan ReBAR issue in 551.46 and above
  • Returnal
  • Starfield Laptop workaround present for DirectX ReBAR issue
  • STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor

u/m_w_h and u/pidge2k do you have any information about these issues if they have been fixed or something about it? Thank u.

[–]m_w_h 3 points4 points  (1 child)

From my notes:

  • [GeForce RTX 4090] Watch Dogs 2 may display flickering when staring at the sky [3858016] - waiting on Ubisoft to respond / fix - https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/game-ready-drivers/13/520845/geforce-grd-53623-feedback-thread-released-61423/3361173/

  • [Halo Wars 2] In-game foliage is larger than normal and displays constant flickering [3888343] - - long term open issue, may need game developer intervention but unclear

  • [Ghost Recon Breakpoint] Game may crash when launched using Vulkan API [3856900] - waiting on Ubisoft to respond / fix in my notes but no link to response

  • [Rainbow Six Siege] The sky may display random flicker when using DirectX API [3898594] - waiting on Ubisoft to respond / fix in my notes but no link to response

  • [Hitman 3] Disable Hitman 3 Resizable Bar profile on Intel platforms [3956209] - this was a fix in driver 528.49, Intel CPU platform issue i.e. ReBAR is disabled on Intel CPU platforms due to Intel Chipset issue that negatively impacts performance with REBAR - same with other games on Intel CPU based Platforms https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1c5g77o/game_ready_studio_driver_55222_faqdiscussion/kzu4b6a/

  • [HDMI 2.1] Auto Low Latency Mode remains active when G-SYNC is disabled from the NVIDIA Control Panel [4011174] - fixed in 536.40 confirmation URL and/or display firmware update, was initially linked to issue with SONY Bravia TVs

  • [NVML] Fluctuations in FPS may be observed when using HWINFO64 sensors while "Enable NVML" setting is checked [4432698] - fixed by workarounds/utility developers - not just HWINFO64, some developers were using high latency NVML API calls that weren't designed for real-time monitoring and/or mixing NVML and direct sensor monitoring

there's also a

EDIT: added link and driver version for Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) fix

[–]Independent_Arg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much. I had lost sight of those issues, but now I am more aware

[–]antdude 1 point2 points  (1 child)

FYI. You misspelled KNOWN. ;) Thanks for the work!

[–]Independent_Arg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks, I have already corrected it, it really slipped my mind with so much data....

[–]Smagjus 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Any feedback for PUBG already? Does the driver possibly fix the infamous 3.5hour crash?

[–]DanBennett 1 point2 points  (3 children)

In testing and from a few streamers already, it seems so!
(The time was different, dependant on GPU)

[–]Kyshin- 0 points1 point  (2 children)

so better performance for pubg now on these new drivers?

[–]DanBennett 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is specifically targeting the crashing after certain amount of time (such as after 4 hours). So YMMV for any other issues you may have

[–]qronis 6 points7 points  (2 children)

After waking up PC from sleep, PC may exhibit a small stutter when opening an app when GPU is connected to certain monitors. [4594458]

This is happening for so long now, it also happened at startup but that has stopped somehow. It also happens when you turn monitor off and on or when changing resolution or else and the monitor flickers shortly. I always thought it was something wrong with the monitors or my system or even gpu might be broken, Im pretty göad to see it here listed as an issue.

[–]mRnjauu 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Same, I was convinced that the issue either started to happen when I updated my bios or the cause was lightning strike which happened several months ago near my house so I was sure that something had to do with those occurrences.

When I wake pc from sleep, when I boot up an app, mouse pointer and everything freezes up for like 1 sec..

Same happens when changing resolution or turning on HDR for example.

7800x3d, 4070ti, b650ef if it matters.

Would be cool if this really isn't issue on my end.

[–]Distinct_Spite80897700X | 4070 Ti Super 6 points7 points  (11 children)

Genuine question if none of that applies to my use cases and my system is running fine, should I just wait to update until a driver directly affects something I play or will play like a new release?

[–]thrwway377 25 points26 points  (8 children)

What's listed in the release notes doesn't mean that's all the changes that the driver contains. There could be minor bugfixes, performance changes or other shadowfixes, as well as new bugs.

If you're fine with your current driver it's fine not to update right away.

[–]Distinct_Spite80897700X | 4070 Ti Super 17 points18 points  (4 children)

I wish there was a full bore changelog to read with every and any change made haha.

[–]thrwway377 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Yeah, Nvidia sometimes doesn't even list pretty "major" stuff in release notes.

For example relatively recently they made it so that you can enable NIS (image scaling) on a per-app basis instead of global profile, which is a huge deal for non-RTX users because NIS had a performance impact for those GPUs when enabled globally even when it wasn't used.

And Nvidia never mentioned this in the release notes anywhere.

[–]Liquidignition -1 points0 points  (1 child)

How on earth did it affect performance negatively? Don't you have to manually set the resolution in game to the prescribed NIS custom resolutions aswell as enabling it globally in NVCP?

Man that's fucked. I gave up on NIS years ago because of how horrid it looked. I get better results with downscaling from native if the game supports it. Can't imagine some poor sucker having it enabled and wondering why their system is running like shit either without selecting it or not.

Makes me think what else could be broken that we don't know of.

[–]thrwway377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who knows how Nvidia implemented it, but it did have performance impact on Pascal and older GPUs.

Just enabling NIS in the global profile affected performance even on native resolution, regardless of whether you use NIS in-game or not.

That's what sucked about it, you either lose performance if you had it set and forget, or you had to constantly turn it on and off any time you wanted to scale the game with NIS.

Well, that is if you didn't want to use third-party apps that had NIS as a scaling option like Magpie or Lossless Scaling.

[–]Snydenthur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The good old rule of "don't fix what isn't broken" is something you could follow. I wouldn't keep using some ancient drivers, though.

You don't have to update for new games either as long as the game runs fine. And even if they don't run fine, the new drivers most likely won't make a real difference.

[–]mmmoryNVIDIA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally stopped updating drivers unless they include security patches or a specific fix that I need. Same goes for BIOS updates.

You can check when Nvidia publishes security fixes in their drivers from here: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/security/

White/black checkerboard artifacts appear on webpages with a video since Chrome 115 - TIMELINE

UPDATE APRIL 2024: official update from a Microsoft employee about the problem with those random artifacts in chromium based browsers:

Thank you, everyone for your patience. The root cause of the issue is a bug in Windows that manifests when drivers use a certain feature. The fix is in prerelease versions of Windows which you can test drive if you are a Windows Insider. Testing is in progress but I'm hoping we'll be able to service the fix to in-market Windows versions.

UPDATE 2 (April 8th, 2024): another official comment

Thank you everyone for your patience.

As I wrote previously, the root cause of the issue is a bug in Windows that manifests when drivers use a certain feature. The fix is in prerelease versions of Windows which you can test drive if you are a Windows Insider. The fix is (now) also making its way through the Windows Servicing branches for in-market versions of Windows. The fix for each Windows version is fairly unique so we're taking our time to make sure it is ready for general consumption and doesn't cause new issues.

In the meantime, the best way to work around the issue locally is to run the browser with the "--disable_direct_composition_video_overlays=1" command line switch.

UPDATE 3: microsoft employee answers some questions asked by users

User: The absolute fix is switching about:flags ANGLE to OpenGL ...

Microsoft employee: If you use OpenGL drivers on Windows, things like DRM videos will not work super well. If you never view those, the workaround might be satisfactory to you.

User: Since the fix is unique to each version of Windows, will they be rolled out all at once, or as they are certified for each Windows servicing branch?

Microsoft employee: As I said previously, Windows Insider builds of Windows already have the fix. As we port the fix to earlier versions of Windows, we'll release those to users.

User: Could you provide a rough estimate of how much time it might take for the fix to make its way into the in-market versions of Windows? (assuming the latest servicing [23H2] branch gets top priority)

Microsoft employee: I do not have an ETA at the moment. I'll let you know more as I find out.

Here's a temporary fix that I'm using for the checkerboard issue on Edge and Chrome.

For Microsoft Edge:

  • Create a shortcut on the the taskbar.
  • On the shortcut, right click -> right click (again) on the name -> Properties
  • On "Target", add at the end: --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess,DCompPresenter --disable-direct-composition

Example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess,DCompPresenter --disable-direct-composition

For Google Chrome:

  • Create a shortcut on the the taskbar.
  • On the shortcut, right click -> right click (again) on the name -> Properties
  • On "Target", add at the end: --disable_direct_composition_video_overlays=1

Example: "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable_direct_composition_video_overlays=1

[–]RedIndianRobinRTX 4070/i5-11400F/32GB RAM/Odyssey G7/PS5 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Does the commandline "disable direct composition" guarantee a fix or just mitigates it? Because I still see tons of CB artifacts even with the commandline enabled.

[–]SpockBauru 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I'm using "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable_direct_composition_video_overlays=1 on my chrome shortcut, and both YouTube and Reddit checkerboard artifacts are 100% gone. But can be something else, this issue was driven me crazy and I made all sorts of settings...

My setup:
i7-12700KF
RTX 3080 12GB - Stock clocks
Windows 11 22H2 with all updates up to Apr/17/2024
Nvidia Driver 551.52
Chrome version 124

[–]RedIndianRobinRTX 4070/i5-11400F/32GB RAM/Odyssey G7/PS5 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I use Edge and the artifacts doesn't go. Here's my shortcut: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --disable_direct_composition_video_overlays=1

[–]SpockBauru 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Edge commands are different. Try this and restart:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess,DCompPresenter --disable-direct-composition

[–]RedIndianRobinRTX 4070/i5-11400F/32GB RAM/Odyssey G7/PS5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After extensive testing, I can confirm the artifacts no longer appear. Thank you for this man. This was driving me insane.

[–]RedIndianRobinRTX 4070/i5-11400F/32GB RAM/Odyssey G7/PS5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I just updated it and killed msedge and relaunched it. Will test it for sometime before coming to conclusion. Thanks for the help.

Is anyone else experiencing issues after this update? I have a 3070 Ti. Today, out of nowhere, my third monitor wasn’t being detected and my refresh rates on the two remaining monitors were reset to 60Hz. I restarted multiple times but it seems like the image on my two working monitors completely freezes after logging into Windows. I’ve finally decided to boot into safe mode and I’m going to try and uninstall the GPU + driver from device manager before booting into Windows normally. Hopefully that will prevent a freeze long enough for me to install the previous driver update…

[–]LightOfShadows [score hidden]  (0 children)

I have a 3 monitor setup but 2 are 60hz and 1 is 120/140 overdrive. But windows display doesn't see it above 60 at all, and nvidia control panel sees the option for 120 but will put it back on 60 after the flicker. Did the reboots and made sure the monitor was on standard settings but I still can't get it above 60 now, any luck?

[–]rhylos360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PT: When in doubt about the cause of screen blackouts or scrambled screen colors, try a couple of new and short replacement display cables.

[–]zawias92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still no HDR rtx im games for multimonitor setups? Amazing

[–]i2Dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And yet they keep ignoring the problem with 4070 ti times that shows black screen on bios while connected to the odessy g7

[–]Snoo-40050 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have to downgrade my driver to 537 first and then move to 546 since this 551 has broken feature or bug affecting every 546 driver. if you install any 551 driver and then downgrade to 546, you still get this annoying composed flip. i will stay at 546 for now. does my bitching about this driver will fixed? i don't know, i've tried

<image>

[–]Snoo-40050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a comparison, this is 546 after downgrade to 537

The problem with g-sync and Samsung odyssey oled g8 remains when g-sync is turned on, the white bar at the top of the screen blinks and is more visible in dark scenes in games https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/18us9sb/samsung_odyssey_oled_g8_line_artifact_at_top_of/

[–]m_w_h 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nvidia have ordered the display and are trying to reproduce the issue - https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1bvn19o/game_ready_driver_55212_faqdiscussion/kyaqd9v/

pidge2k (official NVIDIA Forums Representative) wrote: I ordered the monitor to look into this and it arrived today. I'll see if I am able to reproduce this

Even if it can be reproduced, the fix may take quite a few drivers to implement and QA.

Was hoping for a fix for the frame-pacing issue with frame generation of Horizon Forbidden West, I assume it is related to the bug of Nvidia Reflex On + Boost bug.

Does open issue mean its still no fixed ?

[–]International-Oil377 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Yes that's what an open issue means.

[–]AngeleauX13600kf/4080oc/DDR4 3600mhz 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Appreciate the reply English not my native language

[–]International-Oil377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Worries

[–]Geahad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very glad that others are mentioning this as well. That rhytmic camera pan judder when framegen is on in that game is pretty unique as far as I've seen framegen behave...

One thing's very probable -- it's due to their reflex implementation, as that stutter goes away when one disables reflex (fully) in-game. One can't use framegen without it though...

[–]xSnowLeopardxRTX 3070 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Getting random full screen flashes (for like 1 sec) @ 551.52 w/ a 3070.

Anyone has it too (and updated to 552.22 which helped them)?

[–]FFreestyleRR 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If you mean black screen flashes, then I have the same from 4 months with 3070 TI Suprim, but I don't think it's a driver fault. Probably a GPU issue or а problem with the card or PCI connectors, the cable or the monitor. I am kinda lazy to test with a different card or monitor currently but will perform a troubleshooting soon since my warranty is almost done (less than a year remains).

[–]xSnowLeopardxRTX 3070 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Mhm, I really do hope it is the driver's fault. I have this GPU/build for 1.5 years now and this is the first time it has happened. But then again, I haven't updated my driver in a medium while... I'll maybe do it soon and test 552.22 myself.

[–]FFreestyleRR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sound like a plan. Good luck!

I am sure that at least my problem is GPU related. I should have used the support stand provided by MSI. Probably a PCB Strain led to cracks near the connector but will keep it in mind for my next card.

[–]iKurama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm thankful for this update.

Previous update added the horizontal flicker/stuttering to my 4070ti, and now it's fixed.
Edit: Nope, worse.
Went back to 537.58

[–]Atemsis 0 points1 point  (3 children)

For the first time ever my Installation failed. After retrying multiple times it won't seem to go through. It says both my graphics and HD Audio driver installations have failed, but for PhysX System Software "A newer or same version is present"

I apologize because I am not very tech literate, but does anyone know what may be the issue I am having? Does it have something to do with me already having the PhysX System software installed?

[–]dazia 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Also getting failed installation with no error log.

[–]Atemsis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So for me I guess the issue was not enough C drive space, I deleted some stuff to have about 7GB of space and that worked. Hopefully this helps you.

[–]dazia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I may have found the issue. Haven't used my PC in a hot minute and realized the windows updates I processed kept falling. So I found the exact version falling and have been waiting hours for the window update to finish. Hopefully once it's done here soon I can finish getting the other updates to work, then I'll see if the driver update will work.

I've spent the majority of my day at this age all I was trying to do was record a few minute video for my twitch and YouTube and couldn't due to out of date graphics drivers 😂 I'll check it I have enough space but I believe I do!

"GeForce GTX 10/RTX 20 series: PC may randomly freeze when Windows Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling and NVIDIA SLI are both enabled [4009884]"

FREAKING FINALLY, Take a long time to fix ==

[–]dazia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't get it to install so went to the website and did a fresh install of the driver that way. It then rebooted my PC, stopped detecting 2/3 monitors, and failed again. I don't know what in the world I am doing wrong. I have not used my PC in a while but I cannot figure out why that would be the problem... There isn't even an error log...

[–]uneven_similarity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having random 1-2 second freezes with 550 drivers. They happen while I am on desktop, while on Chrome and happened once while I was in game. Every time when the system freezes, I can hear gpu fans ramping up. I am having Gigabyte 3060ti and 5600x cpu on Asus B550 board with 16 GB ram. Is anyone else having these issues? Every time when I restart my pc I can recreate random freezing. This never happens on 537.58 drivers but I am not sure whether it happenes on 545 version drivers.

[–]Rhapsod96 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have an older PC. My graphics card is GTX 750Ti. Since the installation of this driver today, I faced white screen of death issue twice during regular operation. This had never happened before. I didn't install any new software in the last many days, maybe more than a month. Everything was stable. Then suddenly with this driver update it started giving me the error. Also the font type in Chrome used to be sharper, but after the installation of this driver, it appears softer. Kindly fix these issues asap.

[–]Winter_Mud_5702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you tried DDU and reinstall this driver? When you install drivers on top of previous drivers multiple times major issues can appear and DDU can help.

Going to roll back.

Are u tried DDU and reinstall this driver? that should usually fix those issues.

[–]RTCanada4090 | 13700KF | 32GB 6400 CL30 | 4K 144 | Fractal Torrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my first thought. I did but it did it again in Cyberpunk 2077 and Warzone within 20 or so min. DDUed again but with the previous driver, and no issues now.

I don't play the games with that new driver, so I should be okay.

[–]Limp_Vacation_9947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]declio13900k | 4090 FE | 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still have an issue where my main 360hz 1440p display loses signal when i open a game. Signal returns if i tab out (game is not in focus), but when i tab back in the signal is lost again.

This seems to happen after I allow my PC to sit idle for a while and the displays turn off. I don't allow my PC to sleep--only the displays turn off. A PC restart resolves the issue temporarily.

I keep having to revert to 528.49 to resolve the issue.

[–]Financial_Excuse_429 -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Just wondering...Does using dlss get influenced positively or negatively when windows HAGS is on? Rtx 4090, i9 13900kf, Asus z790p mb, 64gb ddr5 5600mhz.

[–]unlapNVIDIA 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Looks like I just found out my issue they listed about being connected to certain monitors on boot.

[–]Boof_Water 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can you elaborate? I think I’m having a weird similar issue.

[–]unlapNVIDIA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so after boot I have two monitors that are wildly different. LG 29WK600-W and Gigabyte M27Q Rev. 1. LG monitors are recently believed to cause issues in multi-monitor setups. They didn't specify the manufacturer and setup.

If you open a program it stutters or slows trying to open.

dude, I just reinstalled my drivers in the morning with ddu AAAAA

[–]Tixx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

been having the issue that in chromium browsers (probably because rtx hdr is supported), randomly , colors in videos will start appearing extremely oversaturated (noticed on youtube and x/twitter. it starts randomly and also persists if i turn off rtx hdr and superres, it only started appearing after rtx hdr released tho and feels like it applies exactly when superres/rtx hdr also kicks in.

(when i scroll and superres stops working for a second, the oversaturation is also gone, when i start watching the video again, the oversaturation comes back because rtx hdr probably kicks in (except that it also kicks in if i have both disabled via control panel)

without windows hdr active, the issue is not present

[–]UnsettllingDwarf -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Starting to think Nvidia drivers suck ass now.

[–]outofobscure -4 points-3 points  (9 children)

SD videos on chromium browsers are STILL saturated to hell when HD is on in windows. this bug exists since you introduced RTX HD Video, even though the feature is completely turned off. Will you ever fix this?

[–]shteeeb 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Why the hell is this downvoted? I've had this same issue for months and keep checking these posts to see if it's fixed. This bug is so extremely annoying.

[–]outofobscure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you stop downvoting this just because you don‘t have or understand this bug? It happens on non-trivial setups with hdr and sdr screens connected. Just because your one monitor gamer setup is not affected doesn‘t mean professionals are not suffering from this and other ridiculous issues introduced in recent drivers.

Here‘s others describing exactly the same thing https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/16vsg4u/video_is_extremely_blown_out_and_saturated_on/

Before downloading this update I was running CoD WZ at 200fps (custom 90 fps in menu) and 40 degrees celcius. Now after I've downloaded the update, I can only run it at 60fps in both menu and ingame while GPU is heating up to 65 degrees celcius. Anyone know why?

lol this almost looks intentional

[–]yoyigu38 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

intentional? Nope..

[–]nerdybro1 -1 points0 points  (7 children)

That looks like a handshake issue with the monitor and the video card. Try a new HDMI cable to see if that works. If the monitor has another HDMI port, try that too.

[–]yoyigu38 -1 points0 points  (6 children)

I use a kabeldirekt brand displayport cable, before I had an asus rog 4090 and this did not happen with the same monitor, now I have an asus tuf oc 4090 and that started... I tried another displayport on the card and I have the same problem, but I haven't had any problems playing heavy games in 4k or etc., everything is perfect on that side.

Intel, I have the latest BIOS update... should I reload the latest Bios? or something like that?

Ah I am on AMD - but perhaps a BIOS update is needed. I know I tried reflashing the same one when I had the issue, but it didnt fix it. Id say wait for a newer BIOS version - main thing is that I experienced it as well, and it didnt harm anything

ok, I'm going to wait for a new bios on the motherboard, it's not something that really worries me, but I find it strange. Thanks for the help.

I'd still try changing the cable out. It could be a bios issue on the card or on the mobo. I honestly wouldn't lose any sleep over it

It's a bit strange, it only happens in the Asus logo, the games run incredible, very good temps, etc., could I install a new firmware on the GPU? Anyway, I'm going to buy another high-quality displayport cable.

Has this fixed the intermittent freezing issues when new applications load introduced with 551?

So I got a black screen during the installation process, rtx 4070. However, after restarting the pc, it shows it has installed 552.22 driver.

SAme. This started hapenning to me since the previous two driver updates. I use a 4090 with a LG G3 oled tv and it is annoying to have to turn off my pc to resume.

Gigabyte RTX 4080 gaming oc, currently I’m on 551.46, should I upgrade to the latest driver?
