Amazfit Bip 5 - My Thoughts

Welcome to this little scatter-brained 'first impressions' style review of the Amazfit Bip 5. I have owned many Amazfit watches before so I will be comparing it against some of the models I have owned in the past as well. I'm not a professional reviewer in any way, and I don't buy these watches for the majority of their health-based capabilities, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But anyway, let us begin.

This morning, FedEx delivered the watch and I have spent most of the day getting to use it. The Bip 5 itself comes in a slightly pared down version of the boxes Amazfit has been shipping their products out in recently. My box was...definitely a bit beat up, but that's definitely not Amazfit's fault. In the package you receive the watch with it's attached band, a usual Amazfit charger, and manuals and documentation. I HATE the bands that come with Amazfit's cheaper watches, and this one continues the rather cheap plasticky trend, so I immediately took it off and replaced it with another one of my 22mm watch bands. The original band is extremely difficult to remove, so make sure you have your fingernails at the ready for if you want to swap it out.

It came almost fully charged, and only took about an hour to reach the rest of it's charging capacity. I have learned to expect slower charging from Amazfit's watches, so this isn't too surprising. Though, with how rare charging these things actually is, it definitely isn't an issue either. Like I said before, I have spent the entire day using it, changing settings, and just playing around with things. It's now at 95% with a heavy flow of notifications (screen light upon notification is on) as well as just me messing around and trying out different watch faces and changing settings.

Now, the build of the watch is definitely interesting. It's composed almost entirely of glossy two-toned plastic with a big, and I mean BIG curved pane of glass on top. For anyone who is looking to buy a Bip 5 and wants a screen protector, I purchased some for the Bip 3 Pro and they just barely fit over the screen itself. They won't cover the bezels, but they'll work for now until there are some more options. This also gives previous Bip owners a screen size comparison, as the screen of the Bip 5 is as big as the entire glass panel of the Bip 3 Pro, so quite a step up in comparison to previous models. Everything is controlled either via the touch screen or with the single aluminum button on the side of the watch, so it's easy to use as well.

Also, I just want to comment real quick on the vibration motor. It's...not great. It does the job, but it sounds almost like when you leave your phone on top of a wooden table and you get a notification. Not the worst in the world, especially for an $89 wearable, but definitely not great either.

The display itself is actually quite nice. It's a TFT LCD, so it's not going to give you the colors or infinite contrast of AMOLED, but that doesn't bother me. A bit of a hot take, but I actually DESPISE AMOLED panels. My luck when it comes to screen uniformity has made me dislike them with every fiber of my being, so having an LCD is actually a pro for me instead of a con. I wish it was a bit higher resolution, but it doesn't look bad by any means...you can just definitely see the pixels if you're too close. Even with that, it's bright, colorful, and does a great job of showing you all that the Bip 5 itself has to offer.

And there's a lot to offer. From what I can see, this watch has pretty much every feature of the rest of Amazfit's non-specialized lineup. Mini apps, various health tracking sensors and metrics, Alexa, and it even has Bluetooth calling right on the watch. This is a big feature for me, and is one of the three things that in my mind differentiates a smartwatch from a fitness tracker. The other two of those being installable apps (it has them, but it's very limited and also kind of half-baked), and message replies (also quite half-baked). You can save up to ten canned responses to notifications and phone calls, so technically you can respond to things...but it is definitely quite basic. Come on Amazfit, even my Pebble 2 could dictate voice into responses...you don't even need a keyboard! Now, this itself isn't a hit against the Bip 5 specifically, as no Amazfit watch that I know of can currently respond to things with anything other than the responses you set within the Zepp app. If you have used a Zepp OS watch, you will feel right at home here on the Bip 5, and if you haven't used one before it won't take you much time at all to get used to how the watch works and is laid out.

Speaking of the Zepp app. It's Zepp. Easy to use and feature-packed...if a little squirrel-brained. I can't really comment on the Zepp app as I've gotten so used to it by now that it's actually a bit hard to touch on. Though, I do have to touch on one thing. Amazfit says you can choose from over 70 watch faces, but I was able to only count 56 INCLUDING the 5 photo upload faces and the portrait face within the Zepp app. I don't know if I am just missing something, but I am definitely not getting 70 different faces. Hopefully the Amazfaces app will update soon and introduce a Bip 5 section so people can start making faces as well.

Performance is great. Unlike with the GTR Mini or the GTS 4 Mini, I notice very few stutters or anything like that while scrolling through menus. Sure, it's not going to be as smooth as the top of the line Amazfit wearables, but it's definitely better than most of the cheaper models in the lineup.

I am not going to comment on health-tracking, the accuracy of the health tracking, or GPS, as I don't buy my watches for anything other than steps, heart rate, and sleep. I know Amazfit isn't necessarily known for being the most accurate when it comes to these things so I would look to some professional reviews for this sort of thing. I don't want to mislead people.

I think the Bip 5 is positioned in a really weird place on Amazfit's product lineup. It's cheaper than the GTS 4 Mini or the GTR Mini, but it does more than they do too. It might not have an aluminum frame or a Stainless Steel ring, but the plastic build seems like it will do just fine in the long run. I personally really enjoy the Bip 5 and would go for it over pretty much anything Amazfit sells that's below $150, just for the Bluetooth calling feature alone.

Goodbye Amazfit

After getting my original Trex mid 2020, I was very satisfied with the watch functionalities & app. Yes, some small bugs and glitches, but overall great value for money. Great features, great battery life... the stuff we all know.

By mid 2022 everything else is fine but battery % starts to show very strange readings, going from full charge to 40's in a few hours, then lasting 10 days from 10 to 1.

From then to 2023 battery becomes totally unreliable. Until it finally fails to hold a single exercise session. Interestingly though, after uninstalling the app and unpairing the watch, it is still alive, after the last charge has been over 3 weeks ago (not in sleep mode).

I considered getting a new Amazfit, but to be honest, the business model of just releasing new models every year with almost no support whatsoever (even for current models), its something that doesn't fit my profile.

Obviously others my be very happy about getting a new watch with some brand new features every 2 years, but, given how everything else was working, to me that is just wasteful.

So, I guess I'll see if other brands are any different (or just more expensive).

Definitely changed my opinion of Amazfit

Bought an GTR 3 Pro 5 mos ago. It was terrible. Battery lasted about 24 hr. Sleep quality readings were laughably inaccurate. I was convinced it was just a junk product but started the warranty process. I was surprised when they quickly sent a return label. I was expecting to be ignored. I sent the watch on Monday from CA to TX. THREE days later, I got a new watch so they must have sent a replacement before receiving the old watch.

New watch vs old watch is like night and day. The first charge with the new watch lasted 17 days and the current charge is still 64% after 6 days. The sleep quality readings are much closer to the accurate readings on my CPAP equipment. I am also using other functions much more than the old watch.

The watch is a excellent product and Amazfit is a reputable company who stands by their products.

I just got a lemon the first time around.

Are the amazfit really that inaccurate?

I was thinking of getting one (looking at the band 7, bit 3 pro and bit u pro) but I’m seeing a lot of reviews and some in-depth videos comparing amazfit to other devices and it seems almost every feature of the amazfit falls short of being close to accurate.

These seem like expensive toys.

I’m not bashing the brand, it looks like a lot of the cheaper devices suffer the same problems. Yet these seem to be extremely popular - are they accurate for some but not others? Not having another device to compare the data to, how do you know if it’s accurate or when it’s not?

Amazfit GTR 4

So I’ve been using the GTR 4 for about two weeks now and these are things I love and dislike about it.

Pros.

  • The battery - the battery life on this watch is amazing and is probably a major selling point for this watch and actually why i got it in the first place. It lasts me at least 5 days with AOD and headtracking features on. Excluding sleep tracking.

  • The Price - after searching for other smartwatches, the Amazfits seem to be priced a little lower especially when on sale.

  • Notifications – I am yet to see this watch fail to deliver any notification from my phone. It just works so well and notifications are delivered almost instantly. Sometimes even before I get the notifications on my phone.

  • The screen - I love the screen. Its bright, Sharp, and very responsive.

  • Design - I love the design of this watch. Swapping the bands make the watch match every style possible.

  • Watchfaces - there are tons of watchfaces and I haven’t even seen all of them

  • simplicity of OS - the Zepp OS is actually pretty simple to use and can be understood pretty quickly.

  • incredible value for money - you get a lot of important health tracking features for a very moderate price

  • Zepp app is pretty detailed and actually surprised me.

  • nylon strap was very comfortable but was hard to get on and off cause it doesn’t stretch and i have big fists.

  • Health/fitness Tracking - I’ve seen many complaints about the fitness tracking but i think mine functions well actually and tracks my workouts pretty well. i haven’t tried the GPS just yet.

Cons

  • Notification style - Notifications work fine tbh but i just wished the font sizes could be adjusted and the text could be centred. it just makes the notifications look weird since they are always left centred. Long notifications actually look better but single line notfis just look weird. Notifications that also come multiple times are not shown. So if you receive the same notification from an app two times the second one or subsequent ones don’t show.

  • lack of smartwatch based features - the watch struggles to function independently from the watch so its more of an advanced sports tracker rather than a smartwatch. Watchfaces take a couple of seconds to install, you cant stream music from the watch directly unless you transfer them and frankly I think its useless cause it takes a lot of time and fails once in a while, some things need to be done on the app before they reflect onto the watch like contacts downloading apps and watchfaces.

  • Lack of emojis! and pictures in notifications - I just hated seeing so many squares on my notifcations. the emojis are so limited and make it annoying sometimes. The watch doesn’t even support some basic notifications like the heart emojis and a lot more.

  • The Rotating Crown - I don’t know if it’s just my unit or it’s the same with all others but the rotating crown is wobbly and doesn’t feel good. I sometimes think it’s just going to fall out.

  • Raise to wake - Can be slow sometimes and fast other times. I don’t get why it does that. have to wait a few seconds for the watchface to show.

Goodbye Amazfit GTR 4

Just as the title suggest, I had my fun and exercising with the Amazfit GTR 4. It was interesting as this was my first introduction to a proper sport/fitness smartwatch and had helped me a lot in my fitness journey. However it has come to an end and I am selling my GTR 4 on Facebook Marketplace (just posted) and had bought a Garmin (specifically the Forerunner 255) as an upgrade due to more wellness and fitness features it offers that suits my current needs.

Feel free ask any questions and I'll be here all day.

Is Amazfit too good to be true?

I was looking at finally getting a fitness tracker / smart watch for black friday with the sales that are happening.

I was looking at a fitbit charge 6 ($100 but small screen and doesn't offer many bells and whistles and a more expensive $200+ galaxy watch. I want something I can lift weights at the gym with, go on runs with, track sleep and other vitals with, and have an interface that has things like Bluetooth etc.

I didn't even know Amazfit existed tbh. I did some research and I'm surprised this is like the best of both worlds. Not as expensive as a galaxy watch but seems to do all the same things. Less than a fitbit charge 6 and yet offers more. Is it too good to be true? It almost seems fishy how a product seems to offer as much as a $200+ watch for over $100 less yet I've never heard of anyone having it

Amazfit bip 5 - mini review

I've been testing the brand new Amazfit Bip 5 for a few days now.

I bought it because I wanted a watch with a large screen at a good price.

I have been using the Garmin venu SQ 2 watch for a long time. I am satisfied with it, except for measuring sleep, sometimes they try to measure sleep even after waking up.

But now to the new Amazfit bip 5.

I will not list all the functions that bip 5 has.

The watch arrived with 75% battery charge. Charging itself is quite slow. What is in the specifications probably applies, i.e. in about 2 hours from 0 to 100%.

Immediately after the first connection, the update number 3.1.2.1 came
