Someone recommend that I go to Midtown Gastro since it's a Gunners pub here in Toronto. I know it's midweek I hope there will be some turnout. I hope we win too.

Currently 2:15 AM in Aus, game starts at 5:45 AM. Fuck me, if I wake up and see Bellerin receive the ball with flat feet facing back towards Koscielny, I'm gonna snap

Chelsea are like the only top team we beat consistently since Conte has arrived especially away from Stamford Bridge. We do terribly against Liverpool tho anywhere.

            [–]IrishLuke765 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't think this is the game to throw Debuchy into the first team. As good as he's been in Europa, it's still just Europa.

            [–]SqualorVictoria7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if Wenger goes for legs and drops Lacazette we really don't even care about competing anymore.

                [–]CharlieGeorge_11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Need energy and legs in midfield. Assuming Özil and Koscielny are out.

Cech - Bellerin, Chambers, Mustafi, AMN - Elneny, Xhaka, Wilshere - Welbeck, Alexis - Lacazette

Walcott for Welbeck perhaps? Decent record against Chelsea if I'm not mistaken.

If Wenger sticks to back three, it would be Holding for Welbeck from the line up above:

Cech - Chambers, Mustafi, Holding - Bellerin, Elneny, Xhaka, AMN - Wilshere, Alexis - Lacazette

                [–]tipytopmain 2 points3 points  (2 children)

                prefered starting 11 for me:

                    chambers - mustafi - holding

                    Hector - Elneny - Xhaka - AMN

                            Jack - Alexis

                                Laca

                [–]gladoseatcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem here is that it the midfield would be too weak and to centralised. They need stronger support on the flanks against Hazard and the rest, the kind of support three at the back and two wingbacks can provide.

Either that or Walcott and Sanchez needs to take more defensive responsibility but that won't happen.

it's would be great, but we dont switch to 4 defenders :(

Arsene have Mertesacer, and he will use him in 3 at the back.

                  [–]DarthNihilus1Kai Havoc 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I want to see Xhaka next to Coquelin and Jack in the hole behind Lacazette.

                  Alexis and Welbeck wide.

                  [–]Juicydicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hole behind lacazette is tight

Wilshere to turn in his best performance since the one against Barcelona. Lacazette with a brace. Arsenal win 2-1.

                  [–]SqualorVictoria7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that would be fucking perfect. Jack's finally got a chance to prove he's back.

                  [–]Android_Arsenal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly it will be 0-3 to Chelsea :(

Another defensive calamity and we will be 1-0 down early.

Then sideways passing and passing and passing.

Then a counterattack and we are 2-0 down.

Team puts in a fight. Its now sideways passing, passing, passing, a shot! followed by more sideways passing.

                  Another counterattack and its 3-0.

Stadium goes nearly empty, booes ring out, 'Wenger out' A4 papers emerge.

We end the game with 60% possession and Wenger will say .. "we played with the handbrake on .. we had injuries .. schedule is bad.."

But hey, Lucas Perez will be like a new signing!

                  [–]GilsWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think you'll win this game. Wenger owns Conte & his big game record isn't all that.

If ozil is out maybe try jack at rw with el neny in midfield. Iwobi didn’t cover himself in glory the other day but who knows maybe playing him will work out. I’m hopeful as we’ve been pretty decent against Conte’s Chelsea but still worried about those defensive injuries.

                  [–]Nick_TomperTears In My Eyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

supporting Arsenal is not good for my health, I'm already scared for the match. but I'm really curious about our game plan and how our player will start the game.

                  [–]Wilmut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Last year, it was the chelsea away game, that made me stop caring about the rest of last season. I still watched all the games but i was pretty much emotionally logged off after the 3-1 loss, (logged on for the fa cup final ofc ).

We are in a better position now, so it prob wont happen yet. But im rly tired of being let down, and we don't seem to be in good shape atm.

Rly Rly Rly hoping we get a result tomorrow. COYG!

Got a gut feeling that laca will be dropped for welbeck & we'll have a front three of alexis, welbeck and iwobi.

                  [–]Sparrow991 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Meh. I can't bring myself to watch Arsenal anymore, it just leads to frustration. I will still be sat down for kick off but if I see some shitty defending leading to another goal given away then I'm switching off for a while boys

Support your club. Either watch or don't.

Please whatever the formation, do not play Iwobi. He offers absolutely nothing going forward, and is in terrible form. Sideways passing kills no team.

                  Wellblack and AMN for Bellerin

Why not? At least Jack is dynamic, unlike the walking corpse that is sideways Iwobi at the moment.

It's possible that Wenger may go for a back four, given Koscielny's injury. I believe he also recently said he prefers the back four. Iwobi has been very poor in the past few weeks so I would also give Welbeck a chance.

I hope Laca gets a couple of goals. He hasn't scored recently but has been impressive IMO. Would love for his hard work to be rewarded.

                      [–]aquickcommentyo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ozil will play for I have foreseen the future.

                      [–]lwang 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Considering how thin we are right now, I imagine Wenger's going to stick to the 3-4-3. Laca-Alexis-Welbz up top, Jack and Xhaka mid, with AMN and Bellerin as our wings. Back 3 should be Mustafi-Holding-Chambers. Chambers has played a PL season and Holding faced Chelsea in the FA Final, they can stand the test. If the squad can keep it together defensively, we should survive the onslaught and have a few opportunities to counter on the break.

This is going to be a tough one, but with the way things are, I'd be perfectly content with a draw. We need time to lick our wounds and heal.

                      [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I think you got most of the lineup right but I have a feeling Wenger will start Mertesacker over Holding.

All I'm hoping for at this point is for our team to make it very hard for Chelsea to get anything out of this game.

                      [–]lwang 3 points4 points  (1 child)

There's something to be said about Per's leadership qualities, but against Chelsea, we're going to need young legs that can keep up with Morata and Willian. It's a trial by fire, but it's also as good as test as any to figure out our CB needs. Besides, I have a really good feeling about the Holding-Chambers partnership. Hope Wenger feels the same.

                      [–]Zeelthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we plan to sit back deep I wouldn't mind Mertesacker. If we plan to keep a high line it's obviously suicide.

                      [–]AlGunner 2 points3 points  (1 child)

9 games in December will lead to injuries. It is due to us beoing in 4 compeitions but its ridiculous that the FA and PL can allow so many games to be played so quickly. Tomorrows game is our 4th in 12 days.

4 in 12 days is not that bad

Common to have 4 games in less days when pl and cl is played

So if Koscielny is not available, will we still play a 3 ATB?

Because Per, Mustafi, Chambers with AMN at LWB and Bellerin on the right is possibly a disaster waiting to happen.

Hopefully Mustafi comes 🔙🔛🔝 and gives a similar performance like he did in November.

CL = injuries is complete bullshit isn't it. :|

Ramsey and Ozil not on the pitch = zero service for Lacazette. So, pretty much not at all looking forward to this game. Hopefully the home advantage actually becomes an advantage and we sneak some points.

Can we please not put Iwobi on the right? He is in a very bad form/ he is very bad. Much rather have Walcott. I mean, he can atleast poach properly.

Okay, but that's not helpful right now to beat Chelsea.

[–]HuhwtfblehGOATNelli Cult Member 3 points4 points  (5 children)

He definitely has the potential. But it's Chelsea and he hasn't been good last few times he has started. So, I'd much prefer someone who can score and someone who can run into spaces. Like Welbeck or Walcott.

[–]DaGetzThank you very much 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I'm curious as to why you think Welbecks or Walcotts form is any better than Iwobis?

[–]HuhwtfblehGOATNelli Cult Member 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Not about form. It's about what they can provide when they are on the pitch. Iwobi doesn't really do much on the right wing than try to cut in and find Lacazette who is always knee deep into the opposition defence.

If there is nothing he can provide in the current system, I think it's fair to look at other proven options who have done decently in the past.

Iwobi looked much better with Ramsey on the pitch because he supported him by playing an attacking midfielder role and ran alongside him to take the pass when he's pressured. Wilshere on the other hand is currently playing deep not giving that luxury to Iwobi.

So since he isn't effective right now, I'd have Welbeck or even Walcott start before him.

[–]DaGetzThank you very much -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I think you just swap wings with Alexis and then he's on the right side. I'd be fine with Welbz on the pitch depending how he's been doing in training lately which we obviously don't get to see.

Walcott I don't want anywhere near that team. Iwobi is a far superior option to Walcott. He's been shit in the games so far this season and we want that attack to play narrow and intricate which isn't Walcotts game.

[–]HuhwtfblehGOATNelli Cult Member 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sanchez was played pretty wide last game wasn't he?

But yeah, swapping Sanchez to the right would be a good option but he seems to be linking well with AMN and Kolasinac. If Sanchez comes to the right, Welbeck would be a better option just for his workrate and his positioning on the left. He had a really good game when he was played on the left against Chelsea last time.

Yeah, Walcott is a sore subject but he is definitely a better finisher than Iwobi. Iwobi had a couple of chances to shoot last game so I thought having a Walcott in that position would have been a better idea. But sure, if we aren't playing wide, might as well keep Walcott in the reserves.

[–]DaGetzThank you very much 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sanchez was played pretty wide last game wasn't he?

At times. At times he was running bang down the middle off Lacazette. At times he was playing off Wilshere. Alexis is given license to roam where he wants because he has the game sense to do so. I don't think that's a good comparison to any of the three players we're talking about. The point of running the wing backs is to concentrate and narrow the front three.

If Sanchez comes to the right, Welbeck would be a better option just for his workrate and his positioning on the left. He had a really good game when he was played on the left against Chelsea last time.

So did Iwobi but whatever. I wouldn't mind either of them.

Yeah, Walcott is a sore subject but he is definitely a better finisher than Iwobi. Iwobi had a couple of chances to shoot last game so I thought having a Walcott in that position would have been a better idea.

Meh. Walcott is so hot and cold its ridiculous. Walcott in those positions last season would have scored you're right. BUT Walcott got into those positions this season in much easier Europa games and failed miserably. The additional problem is that you put Walcott on the pitch to get forward and score right? If he isn't doing that he's seriously useless. He's lost his pace and he can't finish this season. I don't want him anywhere near the team.

I honestly hope our team finally takes their heads out from their shells and quits playing like a bunch of timid school children. Why are we giving so many teams all this "respect." On offence I want us to take on the defenders, try to beat your man and create space. On defence close down the man with the ball, quit letting them run at us while we backpedal and wait for their move. I would also love for us to quit ball watching!

Another thing, if one player's "transfer drama" can shake up a whole team I question the fortitude of each and every member of the team (including the manager). Get over it, you have a job to do.

This isn't your normal run of the mill club. So start playing like it guys!

                          *Frustrated Gooner*

As for tomorrow: without Ozil, Kos, and Nacho I think it will be a tough game, but still winnable. I hope that last pen didn't shake up Chambers as he played well. I honestly would love to have 2 guys up top. Lacazette needs a partner, and if we play Sanchez it needs to be him up top as well.

I do think it would be great if Cech got his 200th clean sheet against Chelsea!

So fucking sick of this. All it does it gives the player on the ball more time to pick out a pass. Close the cunt down!

You make a lot of good points good sir. A lot.

I disagree with going with 2 upfront though. Like we need to get out of our shells, and try beating defenders to create space, we just need to play to Lacazette’s strengths, that’s all. Just feed him the ball into space. Stop using him as a Giroud for your one-twos for fuck’s sake. He’a still very good at those, but the guy is your best finisher, and always on the run. Why is your first thought not feeding him the ball into space!! He’s a very talented player that we are criminally underusing right now.

                          [–]G3min1Curious Gooner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! he needs the ball in space, but if he gets it with one other person with him that other person could pull away a defender or two. I only said 2 up top, because I think it would make up for the fact that Ozil or a creative playmaker isn't on the pitch.

I hope to see AMN pushed up into a central midfield position sometime soon. I feel he has earned it. Probably won't be anytime soon with Monreal and Kolasinac out, though.

Lol. No, Sane and Bailley and Martial and Salah and Dembele have potential to be great, Iwobi is bang average in comparison and not good enough to start for Arsenal against West Brom let alone fucking Chelsea.

It was the last 20 minutes. The ball that ended up going in wasn't exactly his fault, if memory serves. As for Iwobi. I suppose that's your opinion. In my opinion, I've seen him show skills and ideas that suggest he has it in him to do really well. He has also played really, really poorly lately.

Iwobi was man of the match against Chelsea last year at home. Let's not over exaggerate and write him off.

Iwobi did start against Chelsea when we played them in Stamford Bridge last year and did pretty well.

He did very well. People were calling for him to start over Ozil because he added that defensive security that ozil couldn't provide at the time.

absolutely no evidence for this and Welbeck on a good day scores important last minute winners.. I can't remember Iwobi close to even doing that

                          [–]Zeelthor 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah. He's accidentally scored a few times. That's not enough for a striker at his peak age. Iwobi hasn't realized his potential yet, sure, but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

Iwobi has shown great movement, technique and at least used to try to move forward. He's done that less lately, which is sad.

                          [–]dressing_gown_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iwobi used to pick the ball up and drive at defenses but now he just recycles the ball over and over, you can see how he's being coached into keeping the ball at all costs instead of taking risks.

[–]AfricanRaini feel alive again 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Do you remember the last time Coquelin faced Hazard? He isn’t going to shore anything up.

I don't remember, no. Maybe he failed that time. Do you have a better option? Xhaka? I'm open to not playing Coquelin with better defensive alternatives available, but thus far Xhaka hasn't exactly been convincing.

Yeah, even a draw is pretty much useless to us. We're in a poor run of form while our nearest top 4 rivals (Liverpool) are playing very well. Really worried that if we lose, top 4 might already be out of reach.

                          [–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (6 children)

Time for Coq at CB again. I just don't think Per is up to it anymore. We have to play 343 though, we've dealt with Chelsea better than anyone recently.

I'd keep Iwobi in. I feel he gets too much stick and welbeck has done nothing off the bench recently.

Or you know...an actual CB. Not Mertesacker, but Chambers-Mustafi-Holding is a better choice than Coquelin

2 inexperienced players who have barely played all season. Every option is a big risk.

Chambers has an entire PL season under his belt and if Holding can start the FA Cup Final, he can start a league game.

I dunno why you're turning this into an argument. Of course he can play but he hasn't played with the first team since September. Anyone's first game in that long is a risk.

Much rather see 4atb tbh, we're shit defensively either way but seem to play better attacking football with a back 4

                          [–]Xez90 14 points15 points  (10 children)

Right, this is going to be a fun match. We have lost a few crucial players, but that's what depth is all about. So time for the bench warmers to make an impression!

Here is how I would like to line-up:

                                          Cech

                              Chambers Mertesacker Mustafi

                          Bellerin Maitland-Niles

                                   Wilshere Xhaka

                             Iwobi Alexis

                                        Lacazette

Am I confident in this line-up? Nope. But, this is PROBABLY the strongest team we can field. I would love to get Welbeck in there as well, but he's not overly useful on the right... then again in current form neither is Iwobi (Ha)

Other than that... what can you do? Injuries are a bitch at this time of year.

EDIT: Slow day at work so just going to throw in another formation that may work:

                                           Cech

                          Bellerin Chambers Mustafi Maitland-Niles

                                         Coquelin?

                                  Wilshere Xhaka

                           Iwobi Alexis

                                          Lacazette

Is Coquelin injured? I can't remember! If so, Elneny I guess?

                          Laca Alexis-Wilshere-Welbeck Coq- Xhaka Maitlamd-mustafi-Chambers-Bellerin

Honestly, Holding over Mertesacker and Iwobi needs some time back in the reserves at this point.

Please no Iwobi. He's completely useless. Only sideways passing, can't take a player on, no goals in him, terrible positional awareness. As bad as Walcott is, I'd rather have him in the lineup. Is a goal threat and attempts decent runs. Iwobi was literally running into our other players in the West Brom game. He's a liability...

another example of young player progression through Wenger's expert management...

                          [–]Xez90 0 points1 point  (2 children)

He has been poor, but I do my best to keep Walcott out of my starting line ups these days haha.

How about this... Iwobi swapped with Wilshere and then Elneny for Iwobi?

Or just play Iwobi. He hasn't been remotely as bad as people are making him out to be.

                          [–]gand_ji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm..I feel like that would limit Wilshere's game which we would need him to be on top of if Özil's not playing. Walcott will also be looking to make a point considering he's been almost purged from the Arsenal squad. Also, I don't think he could do any worse than Iwobi in the last 6 months. He can at least finish and has pace....

I think it's time to start Welbeck over Iwobi

I think you'd have to move Alexis to the right if you were to do this which might not be the worst.

I would rather have Walcott on the right than Welbeck if you were going to do that. Watching such a one footed player who can't cut in is like watching a baby fawn take it's first steps.

If Monreal is back I hope we go to a back 4, I like AMN but LWB is not for him, we already look dry going forward as it is.

We will be 5 or 6 points behind top 4 if we don't win tomorrow. Win is must.

Could see Da Silva or Bielik on the bench, tbh I'd prefer giving one or both a chance vs Debuchy.

Look how well the Conservative (A M-N) has done.

                          Give youth a chance.

I agree, although not sure Chelsea is the best fixture to blood them in. Hopefully they can learn a lot just from the matchday experience though.

It does say in the post that the game is on Wednesday, but I suppose some people may get confused and think it's tonight

                              [–]Xez90 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I genuinely thought it was Wednesday for about 5 seconds before I came crashing back down to reality lol.

(I am referring to the discussion point that reads: It is Wednesday my dudes. not the actual fixture date)

                              Oh didn't notice that actually

Ha, fair enough! Think a lot of people will miss that and just think I'm a nob lol.
