Tatum is the weirdest star in the NBA

This isn’t a reactionary take because I’ve held this opinion for months at this point. Tatum is obviously a very good player. No one in their right mind can deny that. His stats are impressive, he’s been on deep playoff runs but something just seems off whenever I watch him. People always call him an elite player but what exactly is he elite at? He’s not really an elite offensive player nor is he one of the 10 best defenders in the league. He’s a jack of all trades who is good to very good in most areas but not really top 3 or top 5 in the league at any. Luka, Jokic, LeBron, Giannis, Embiid are ELITE offensive players and Tatum is just not on their level. You can even make a case he’s not as good as SGA or even KD on offense. Defensively, he’s really good but again I don’t think he’s top 10 in the league at that. I’ve seen Celtics fans argue that once Tatum gets going and the 3 ball starts falling, he’s the most unstoppable player in the league but you can literally say that about any star player. Also if you’re relying on a star player to get hot to prove that he’s a superstar then your argument just falls flat. A superstar should be able to make his presence felt every game and he should be able to take over in clutch situations. Tatum again fell short in the 2nd half today, he only scored 8 points in the entire 2nd half of a playoff game against a heat team that’s missing 2 of its 3 best players. Players have bad games/quarters in the playoffs that’s true, but it just seems amplified with Tatum.

Yes he’s had deep playoff runs before but how much of that is on him and how much is of that on the team he’s had around him? Would it really make a difference if you replaced Tatum with another star wing? I don’t know at this point.

If you don't see someone here that you think should be, they probably were in the Small Forward list (like Paul George) or Point Guard list (like Tyrese Maxey). Jaylen Brown has been playing small forward and Devin Booker has been playing point guard to fit on their teams better, but I still consider them true shooting guards.

10. Bradley Beal

9. Tyler Herro

8. Desmond Bane

7. Dejounte Murray

6. Jalen Williams

5. Kyrie Irving

4. Jaylen Brown

3. Anthony Edwards

2. Donovan Mitchell

  1. Devin Booker

What is the ideal 4 in today’s NBA?

As a Kings fan we had played Keegan a ton with Harrison Barnes. Both aren’t super lengthy or have a lot of girth but seem like 3’s to me. One of them is playing out of position. Keegan spent a lot of time guarding the perimeter but also would get switched onto bigger players. In college he was a 4 who posted up a lot on smaller players. During his career he spent a lot more time on offense running through DHOs or getting catch and shoot shots. It’s hard to imagine what the perfect 4 is in today’s NBA. Is it a stronger player Zion or Aaron Gordon? A lengthier player like Mobley, maybe even Chet who willingly shoot perimeter shots and attack the basket? A mix of the two like JJJ as a weakside defender? There isn’t many perfect solutions and the Kings have a hole to fill between Domas and Keegan. What are your thoughts on the perfect or ideal 4?

A list of NBA and ABA players who were in The Tyson Zone

The Tyson Zone is a phrase coined by Bill Simmons to describe the point at which someone's behavior becomes so unpredictable, that there is nothing they could do that would shock or surprise the general public. The phrase is nicknamed after boxer Mike Tyson due to his bizarre public antics, both inside and outside of the ring.

Simmons himself included a couple of basketball players as members of the Tyson Zone, namely Ron Artest and Dennis Rodman.

What are some examples of other players who, in your mind, reached such ignominy? I'd be interested in filling out a list here by decade. I'll put in some of my nominees (along with some of their zany exploits that people shrugged at), and am happy for any feedback on those. I also have just four players and would appreciate any thoughts, feedback, and suggestions, and I'll update the list accordingly. I'm particularly interested in what sort of Tyson Zone players existed back in the 50s and 60s, if any.

NOTE: I'm interested in players who were both considered out-of-control both on and off the court. Let's omit players who had a respectable pro career, but then went off the deep-end in retirement.

1950s

1960s

  • Reggie Harding: (from u/WriteBrainedJR) routinely slept through practice sessions and missed team flights; was suspended from the NBA (for a year) and received the highest ever fine at the time ($2,000) for assaulting a police officer; pointed a gun at a teammate Jimmy Rayle and threatened to kill him for being racist; threatened to kill his GM during a television interview; was the inspiration behind the robbery scene in White Men Can't Jump.

1970s

  • John Brisker: hot in-game temper and quick to fight; once got ejected within the first two-minutes of a game and returned to the court multiple times before police had to threaten him with arrest if he didn't stay in the locker room; multiple teammates have reported they were scared of him and his anger and unpredictable behavior; in retirement, traveled to Uganda and disappeared, possibly participating as a mercenary fighter in a coup (see What Really Happened to John Brisker?).

  • John Q. Trapp: while serving a suspension, drank cocktails while sitting on the bench; when Sixers coach Roy Rubin tried to sub Trapp out, he pointing to an associate of his in the stands, who flashed a gun; to avoid missing a team flight which would cause him to be fined, Trapp called in a bomb threat to delay the flight's departure.

  • Spencer Haywood: (from u/ahomelessguy25) got kicked off the Lakers during the Finals because he was doing so much cocaine that he fell asleep in practice; tried to pay a hit man to kill his own head coach; purposefully tanked a game against the awful 72 Sixers in a bid to get his martinet coach fired.

1980s

1990s

  • Dennis Rodman: Dated Madonna and married Carmen Electra; had a mock wedding where he married himself; kicked a cameraman on the baseline that he ran into; headbutted a referee; made salacious comments to the media (Bird being elevated by media-writers because of his skin color, making off-color comments about Mormons); traveled to North Korea to meet with Kim Jong Un.

2000s

  • Ron Artest: Went into the stands and instigated the Malice at the Palace; while on the Bulls, applied for a job at Circuit City; elbowed James Harden in the head; weird comments to the press after Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Championship.

2010s

2020s

Got owned on all fronts today so that was fun :). i mean could of had a really good night if the late game just didn't blow out since i full stacked it in pretty much every single lineup i played tonight and most of my fanduel lineups were at least close to the cash so pretty brutal. Hope you all avoided the mayhem with this slate.
