I can't believe how little discussion I've seen on this, and that it never occurred to me before. I only found one small old thread on reddit, with a couple poor arguments in it. Here is the evidence as I see it:
-
The story is told from Red's perspective as narrator, meaning every ounce of it came from Andy and how he chose to portray himself to his cell mates.
-
Andy's story in court was that he went to confront his wife, armed, motivated, and drunk, he dropped bullets with his fingerprints everywhere, then he changed his mind and left. His gun then vanished mysteriously, never to be found. As a spectacular, trillion-to-one coincidence, his wife was murdered by someone else that exact same night.
-
The story Tommy tells about Elmo blatch admitting to killing in a similar manner to that which happened to Andy's wife really could be inaccurate or a coincidence, exactly as the warden said. It's certainly far more likely than Andy's ridiculous defense being true.
-
Andy was a rich man convicted by a jury as guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. That doesn't just happen easily, even in those days.
-
The original novella leaves his innocence more ambiguous (e.g. the warden doesn't kill Tommy), so it's possible the movie simply slanted things to appeal to the widest audience, making Andy a hero.

Somewhere in the middle of the Shawshank Redemption, Andy’s friend Tommy tells a story about an old cell-mate of his, who was bragging about murdering the wife of a banker, who was having an affair with a golf pro. And then pinning the crime on her banker husband.
Most people claim this is evidence Andy is innocent, and this is also, arguably, the message the film is trying to convey. At least at a superficial level. But watching the movie again recently I realised it is very superficial evidence, and the movie is actually leaving Andy’s guilt/innocence open.
Let’s look at the evidence against Andy
1: Seen at his wife’s home, drunk with a loaded weapon.
2: Seen getting out of his car and walking towards her home with the weapon
3: Court evidence that he threatened his wife with death if she tried to divorce him
4: Documented alcohol/anger problems
5: Very cold, and unemotional about her death
6: He claims he threw his own gun in the river, but the police could not find it despite dredging the river for over 3 weeks
7: Murder weapon used same bullets as his own weapon
8: Absolutely no alibis
9: Andy is seen at the very start of the movie, sat in his car with a gun and EIGHT bullets. The exact same number of bullets that was used to kill the lovers
10: Why would he take 8 bullets with him? Why take the extra 2? Because he wanted to do exactly what the prosecutors said he did? Which is to murder them, and then re-load and shoot them both once more?
I agree, there is no definitive answer on this, but I also think there is no definitive evidence he is innocent either. And there is actually quite a lot of evidence he is guilty.
