Recently discovered jamal and it's feels like i've been missing out this whole time... his playing just suits my preferences perfectly, from the melody to technique to the harmonies. im really into his slower tunes, especially from the 60s-70s. pershing, penthouse, and happy moods are my current favs
anyways i would appreciate some good ahmad tunes, since he has a super long career and his style changes throughout the years
btw i could be wrong but every so often i hear a classically influenced line or motif. has he ever recorded classical before? it seems like every jazz pianist from erroll to evans have recorded some take on a classical tune, but i can't find it.

I came across this video of Ahmad Jamal performing 'Poinciana' on YouTube. I've heard this song many times, but this is the first time I've seen band members playing it They seem like they're having a very good time, even though it looks like an encore at the end of a performance!
Note: Ahmad was so comfortable with the piece that he starts playing piano before he has sat down. I think that is so cool.

After having a Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson phase I've moved on to Ahmad Jamal.
I just picked up Live at the Pershing 'But not for me' and it's a stunning live disc. What else would you recommend I pick up?
Not just a Pittsburgh jazz great, but a titan on the global level. If you haven’t checked his music out, Poinciana is a great place to start.

He died five days ago at the age of 92, to prostate cancer. Rest in peace to the legend behind the Solace piano sample, as well as other iconic samples like The World Is Yours by Nas and Eye (from Eye/I and I/Nation) by Mavi. I recommend his live album "Live at The Blackhawk," it's super chill.
