GameStop branded SSD☁ Hype/ Fluff (i.redd.it)

Was looking to make some upgrades to my PC when I came across this GameStop branded ssd. Good to see them getting into new markets. But they really need to get the store front sorted. It’s so difficult to filter items, like even basic stuff like filtering by capacity.

There’s only 2-3 valid contenders for nvme chips and even less controller manufacturers for the speeds the ps5 requires.

But if GameStop wants to compete they have to publish technical details like chip maker, dram size, controller, etc

They also need to have prices comparable to Amazon and actual computer building websites. There are similar ssd drives that are almost half the price of these 2TB SSD HDs..

lol because SSD performance varies as wildly as said prices

it's like saying there are GPU's that are less than half the price of a 4090......

from idle/light normal PC task performance, to gaming or other intensive work medium/heavy performance, to consistent/long term/extreme performance, to temps, whether has a heatsink or not, sequential performance, ps5 performance, warranty length, lifespan etc

Yeah, this. You could get a shit adata, team group, or quite a few other shit brands.

Also most cheap SSDs are QLC nand which imo is hot Garbage. TLC nand chip SSDs are the cheapest I'll buy, QLC might be cheaper but they're unreliable and awfully slow. Not even an SLC cache can make QLC drives worth it.

Man I miss OCZ and their RD400 MLC SSDs, those things lasted forever and wouldn't die. Sadly the only MLC drives I've been able to find now days are the Samsung 970 Pro NVMe and Angelbird

With how fast modern day NVMEs are and gen 5 almost doubles that, you can't perfectly vertically integrate without having 10-11 figures ready to invest, and IP already in the game.

Also maybe it's just me but Gamestop needs a private brand label, Bestbuy has Insignia, Target has 9000 different ones, Microcenter has Inland, Newegg has Rosewill, Gamestop should also follow suit especially when branding for non-gaming products which an SSD can easily be.

      Depends. Since this is Gamestops private labeled product, they are probably getting these cheaper than if it was from another company doing the same thing, but selling to Gamestop. Even though its on discount for pro members, it may still be a higher margin. At the very least a better cash flow item.

      I am glad to be surprised however, I'd be very surprised to learn that GS was producing these. I am sure we're looking at a branded product here but that doesn't mean anything negative per se. I may not pre-order but I'll be on the lookout for some TA of the hardware variety! :P

      They aren't. There's only a few nand flash SSD producers in existence. Sk hynix, Samsung, Micron(bought Intels nand factory iirc), Toshiba/Kioxia/Lite-on.

          Ok but that still means “higher margin” is incorrect. You’re describing a lower margin of profit from discounted pricing offset by increased sales volume (demand) for overall more gross profit.

          The reply was referencing GameStop’s own product, not the pro discount. The increased margin per unit comes from GameStop producing their own hardware rather than selling another brand. Even with a pro discount the margin is still higher than selling the brand name.

            Best comment of the thread so far and right on the money. Here's a thing we'll sell you to fill with things we could sell you. Oh, and a few discounts along the way!

            I'm typing this on an Atrix 60% keyboard that, while purchased on clearance (I didn't know they were selling the kind of keyboard I wanted but should have known better!) is beyond functional and is a pleasure to use. Keyboards aren't SSDs but I'm here looking and about to do some research. I'd love to more than double my PS5 storage at a competitive price.

            We're watching vision, mission, and commitment play out and these things have probably been in the pipeline for a respectable amount of time. Keep cooking RC, et al!

            They’re literally discounting STORAGE for users so they can have more capacity on their PS5s to buy more games.

            Digital game sales have the highest margins.

            You’re contending that Gamestop is going to make money by selling digital versions of Ps5 games.

            Can you show me a link to a digital download version of a PS5 game on the Gamestop website’s online store?

            I’ve been trying to find one. A fairly popular title, in digital downloadable version from Gamestop so Gamestop rings up the sale, not a direct download from the Sony playstation store. And their search filters don’t let you search by digital versions.

            Every game listed shows a digital version option but it’s always grayed out as unavailable. Must be because it’s… out of stock and sold out.

            Gamestop is discounting ice but there’s no drinks and beer.

            I get your point but this is a shitty hill to die on just to try and FUD. You're obviously not too stupid to understand that they get higher margin on their OEM branded product and that can lead to higher profit margins of the company as a whole if you increase volume of sale on high margin products by slightly decreasing the price to increase consumer value perception.

              I’m in sales in distribution and OEM equipment, exclusive(house) brands are such an essential part of any sales organization these days. I was hoping early on that GS would take this route and to see them expanding this effort so much is incredibly reassuring and makes me even more bullish. I like the company, and I like the stock.

                WD makes garbage NAND. I have a pure hatred for their SSDs. Out of the 60 SSDs I've bought from them, 20 have died within the first year. Yeah. 20.

                Sk hynix is probably a much better option than WD. I bought 20 SSDs from them and they're decent.

                  It add additional storage capacity. So less uninstalling and reinstalling of games. With game sizes getting so big these days it’s pretty much needed.

                  Not sure if the heat sink is needed but I guess it helps.

                  Depends how many games you want to have in rotation. I’m an Xbox idiot and no longer have PlayStation, but I have 1TB internal. Games like Call of Duty are well over 100GBs nowadays. With 1TB, you could realistically have 7-10 games downloaded and ready to play.

                  You should also consider your internet speed. If you have fast internet, it’s not that much of a hassle to uninstall games and download new games. If your internet is bad and it takes you all day to download one game, you might consider additional storage so you can easily store a large game library.

                    It is SSD, hard drive memory, the storage where games and updates will download into and where saves will be located if they are not uploaded online :)

                    Other than adding storage space,SSDs generally perform much better than HDD. Specifically loading screens will be much faster IIRC. Not sure if PS5 has an SSD by default or not or if it benefits from them the way PCs do.

                    Ps5 does have a 1tb ssd, but these are internal storage that you can play ps5 games off of. If you have an external hdd you can only play ps4 games off of it

                        The price is not great at all as of 2023 when people can find 2tb NVME with 7gb+/second transfer rates for far less than 150 bucks. We don't even know the transfer rate of the Gamestop branded NVME too, and could be far lower than price suggests.

                        Even if this turns out to be a TLC gen4 2tb (in which case pricing would be competitive), there are no specifications to make it competitive in the market.

                        Imho their pricing should get a bit better on PC components the more that they sell. It’s a somewhat newer segment for them so it may take a bit until they are putting in huge orders for these items and as they buy more and get a reduced price they will reduce their prices as well. In the meantime I bet they will have great deals at times for pro members and then stack on the rewards.

                        Expensive is relative with SSDs. You could get a garbage QLC 2TB NVMe 4.0 drive for $90 on Amazon. Or you could get a TLC 2TB NVMe 3.0 drive that's a million times better for $150 on Amazon. Or you could try and figure out the quality of this drive that GS sells and try and figure out if they're using a good OE

                        However, you are right about the website. It still sucks. Sorting and filtering sucks. Also, I thought they would have an inhouse developed affiliate program like Amazon, by now. Amazon's is really nice. I like that you can find and item and link the page directly. I don't do much affiliate stuff, any longer, but Amazon's was the best I saw. Walmart sucks, and so does all the 3rd party programs that sites use.

                        GameStop uses some third party (Rakutan) that is bad.

                        I also thought GameStop might get into selling via 3rd party fullfillment like Amazon and Wallmart.

                        I have lots of credit card signup bonuses I can trade into gift cards to buy during times when banks offer discounts.

                        I hate apple products for the fact they restrict me and force me to pay higher price to have it look good. Death to all manufacturers and brands that restrict upgradability.

                        RAM and HDD/SSD/NVME is pretty hard to fail. those are the staples. IF your SSD fails....there is an issue typically due to heat.

                        A high quality power supply also doesn't depreciate in value much and is necessary for desktop builds but not for laptops of course but high quality power supplies like evga seasonic and Super Flower are essential for gaming desktops. the crypto miners were buying these up along with the GPU stack during the mining boom. I'll be honest the price of power supplies didn't go down much in fact I think it may have went up in price....

                        anyway I know the good brands already and some of their manufacturers of the brand as well so I go directly to their manufacturer if they offer a better deal since I already know. but I know I'm a nerd.

Is there something I’m missing in the specs? Regardless it’s cool they are branching out and if carried in stores I know people will pay more to be able to drive and get one TODAY.

                        I was wondering if the heat sink was something added but honestly it’s like reading Chinese to me. Pcie name no idea what that is either.

                        Edit: “2tb m.2 ssd pcie nvme gen 4 with heatsink” on google has things pop up for $130-$140 so they’re in the range. Especially for just breaking into this niche. Great stuff.

                        It's not a bad price for what it is, generally white parts are more expensive as well (at least in PC building). In fact, I'm not even sure you can grab a Samsung or WD with a white heatsink at all.

                        My only concern would be whether or not it's just a rebranded SanDisk drive.

                        I guess it wouldn't be a problem at all. SanDisk is a much better brand for hard drives than what most people think. We repair thousands of laptops desktop every month and we erase the hard drives and I didn't see a single SanDisk SSD/mSata/nvme/m.2 that failed the erasure meanwhile I saw many Seagate, Samsung and WD go to the bin.

                        You can get adapters that fit into pcie slots to fit these if your PC doesn't have a slot, the small x8 ones plug into the second video card slot, it looks odd not using all the pins but it works... For those worried they don't have a nvme slot
