a question form /u/breakermw who could not make it today

Hi Ed,

Love you work on Iron Fist. I'm bummed to see the series ending. If the series was to continue longer (say, to issue #100) what were your plans for the next arc or arcs?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 34 points35 points  (2 children)

Keeping those in my pocket for now, just in case.

I will say that I did want to do some deep dives into Iron Fist's past rogues gallery and try to re-establish them as big bads in the Marvel U. Also would have liked to bring Sabretooth back -- the relationship between him and Danny was a lot of fun to write.

[–]breakermwGreen Arrow 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Thanks! I hope we get to see more Iron Fist from you someday (perhaps an OGN?)

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fingers crossed.

[–]martydolanUltimate Spider-Man 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Because you’re the writer of a great Iron Fist series- I have to ask:

What’s your go to Kung Fu/ Martial Arts movie?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Usually the classics: Duel to the Death, 36 Chambers, 5 Deadly Venoms, Fist of Fury, etc.

Big Sonny Chiba fan as well: Street Fighter, Karate Bullfighter.

[–]martydolanUltimate Spider-Man 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Ah but here’s the real question:

How much did you love Big Trouble in Little China?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I watched it about 6 million times as a kid. Still love it.

[–]mike_incognito44Speedball[🍰] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

What was the last comic you read?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

  • X-Men Red #1 (just this morning)

[–]vgullaModatron 12 points13 points  (8 children)

  • What was the most unexpected part of working in the comic industry?
  • Who were your favorite characters as a kid?
  • What are your favorite current books that you aren't writing?
  • If you had to be stuck on a desert island with only 3 graphic novels what would they be?
  • Who is Dick Grayson's one true love?

Thank you so much for doing this AMA!

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 22 points23 points  (6 children)

  • I think the most unexpected part is the sense of community. I didn't realize how tight everyone was.
  • Spider-Man, Punisher, Wolverine.
  • Punisher, Paper Girls, Saga, Southern Bastards
  • Going to cheat this one a bit and add runs on a book: Ennis's run on Punisher Max, Kraven's Last Hunt, Scalped.
  • Who's Dick Grayson?

[–]Archgringo 10 points11 points  (13 children)

Are there any Marvel characters you believe are being underutilized or just underrated? Any obscure or lesser known characters you’d like to write?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 27 points28 points  (12 children)

I'll always mention Speedball. Always.

I would like to see something good done with Power Pack and/or Cloak and Dagger.

[–]droppinhamiltonsMagneto 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I liked that Alex Power was brought into the Future Foundation during Hickman's run- hopefully we'll see more of him when they return. Cloak and Dagger are criminally underused and should really get a place on a mainstream team after the events of Secret Empire.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Agreed!

[–]droppinhamiltonsMagneto 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Thanks for the response! Kind of along the same lines as Marvel shelving certain heroes for awhile- if you could kill off any major character indefinitely who would you choose?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Apocalypse.

[–]mcslackensHoward The Duck 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I wanted to argue with you, but the more I think about it, the more I realize you're completely right. Apocalypse should have been gone at the end of the Age of Apocalypse, because his story had been completed at that point.

Granted, money is involved, so I understand the company wanting to get some more mileage out of the character at the time, but wow, The Twelve was just an awful story.

Ultimate X-Men's take on Apocalypse being a figment of Sinister's imagination at first was neat, but that also didn't end well. Thanks, Ed, for helping me understand that it's time to retire the character and move on.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm here for!

He's a character that I've generally become less interested in the more we learn about him.

[–]Archgringo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool! I’d love to see something new with Speedball as well, thanks for the reply!

[–]mike_incognito44Speedball[🍰] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Have you ever put Speedball in a book? If so, I need multiple copies.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

No. Though, there was a book I'd been in talks to write and I had the PERFECT way in for him, but ultimately I went with a different project.

One day, though.

[–]mike_incognito44Speedball[🍰] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I will keep my eyes peeled.

I've been a huge fan since Nicieza's work with the character in his New Warriors series. Are you familiar with the run?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yep. Been a while since I've read it though.

[–]mike_incognito44Speedball[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It holds up remarkably well. Art from Bagley and Robertson doesn't hurt either.

[–]WallyGropiusThe Thing 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Who are your favorite writers?

What was your X-book growing up?

Favorite cartoonists working today?

Favorite movies/shows from the past year?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 16 points17 points  (2 children)

  • Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, David Lapham, Gipi
  • I grew up with Uncanny, which I still love. Was also a big New Mutants fan.
  • JRJR, Goran Parlov, Declan Shalvey
  • MOVIE: Bad Day for the Cut, The Ritual. SHOW: The Deuce, Fargo

[–]WallyGropiusThe Thing 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I've met Lapham a few times, he's a super nice guy, love his work

you gots some good taste!

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I met him a couple years ago and he was really nice to me.

[–]LoneWolfPanda 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Hi Ed,

I've really enjoyed your work since I started reading The Violent with you, Adam, and Michael when it was coming out in issues. Since then, I've picked up Murder Book, Comeback, and the first volume of your Iron Fist book. Anyway, I've got two questions for you:

  1. Are there any status updates regarding the Kickstarter for Volume 2 of The Violent? I understand you and Adam are super busy with your Marvel work right now, but I'm curious if you've had any plans regarding possibly moving ahead.

  2. I've really enjoyed your crime noir books (Murder Book, The Violent, etc.). Is there any word on you doing something like that for Marvel anytime soon?

Thanks,

LWP

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. We're not going to Kickstarter it now. The trade for The Violent sold fairly well, so Adam, Mike and I will return to it one day. It's just a matter of finding the time as all three of us are working at Marvel now and being kept quite busy. But, it's coming. At some point.

  2. Hopefully, but nothing I can comment on at the moment.

[–]igetwet13 8 points9 points  (2 children)

What the hell color is Iron Fist's outfit? I don't know if it's my eyes or what, but even when it's clearly purple or clearly brown or whatever, something about it makes it seem like it's not quite that to me. Please help.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Black with yellow stripes. Basically reverse Bruce Lee Game of Death.

[–]igetwet13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much.

[–]darkquinlanAdam Warlock 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I’ve really enjoyed all your Marvel work, especially Iron Fist and Bullseye. What other Marvel characters would you love to write? Also, which is your least favorite Marvel character?

Edit: Forgot to ask. What are your favorite current comics?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  • The list of characters I'd love to write is pretty long, but near the top are Punisher, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Winter Soldier, Speedball.
  • I'm not sure who my least favourite Marvel character is, to be honest. Maybe Beak?
  • Punisher, Paper Girls, Saga, Southern Bastards

[–]LlamaentitySpider-Mod 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Thanks for joining us for an AMA!

Couple questions for you:

  • Are you into video games? If so, any in particular that have inspired your comics writing?

  • What would be your ideal meal for dinner tonight, if you could have anything in the world?

  • How does it feel to be a letterer and a writer? Do you think you approach writing comics differently than you would have otherwise, because of your lettering experience?

  • I bought your The Ballad of Sang #1 and found it to be quite fun, with some very dynamic art. Do you know yet how long of a run it's intended to be?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

-I find that I rarely play videogames. When I do, it's usually Minecraft or Mario Kart. I keep trying for more immersive games, but find that deadlines add just enough guilt that I can never fully give myself over.

-Pad Kee Mao with tofu.

  • I've been writing for longer than I've been lettering, though I was published as a letterers first. I found that lettering definitely taught me to be more economical with my dialog.

-Ballad of Sang is a 5 issue mini. It tells a pretty complete story, so not sure we'd go beyond the 5. Though, never say never.

[–]LlamaentitySpider-Mod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the answers! I've looked up Pad Kee Mao and it looks delicious! I've had similar dishes before, and I'll be sure to try this one out.

I love a good mini, so I look forward to seeing the rest of The Ballad of Sang.

[–]johnnymazey 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Are there any elements from the Old Man Logan storyline that you wish should have made it into the movie Logan?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I do wish we had the original Hulk Gang in the movie and that the movie had leaned into being more post-apoc. But, I get why they didn't and it's a damn fine movie regardless.

[–]temporal712Mod Rider 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Hey Ed! Big fan of your Iron Fist. Probably the best I have enjoyed the character since Fraction. My Question is, if you could have Danny perform any kung fu move, from your imagination, what would the move be called and what would it entail?

Oh! And before I forget! I absolutely adored your Bullseye mini! What was your favorite part about working with a character thats very hard to see as a protagonist? How did you go about structuring that story and the inspirations for it?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Hmmmmm...

I tried to have Danny perform a piledriver, but cut it because it didn't work. I know pretty dumb, but I love when heroes incorporate wrestling moves into their repertoire.

Maybe his version would be called: Night of One Thousand Regrets

[–]temporal712Mod Rider 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Thanks Ed! That's an awesome name! I also maybe have edited my comment from earlier, because I forget to mention how much I loved you Bullseye mini! What was your favorite part about working with a character thats very hard to see as a protagonist? How did you go about structuring that story and the inspirations for it?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I think that I thrive on writing terrible characters like Bullseye.

I wanted to write something where we got to showcase the chaos that Bullseye brings, while also showing how it impacts those around him.

As for inspirations and structure, that Bullseye mini was one of the cases where I had a pitch ready to go and wasn't feeling it, then about two hours before it was due, the idea that became the book struck me. It all hit me fairly fully formed, to be honest. That rarely happens, but when it does, you just latch on and go for the ride.

[–]temporal712Mod Rider 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thats awesome! I definitely had a blast reading it, it was a wild and bombastic ride and I personally would love to see more! thanks for this AMA!

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Thanks for reading!

He's popping up in Old Man Logan VERY soon.

[–]temporal712Mod Rider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

then its high time I start pulling it!

[–]2thSweet Tooth 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Hi Ed! So how are you today? Any big plans after this?

As for comics, who is your dream character to write. I'm talking you are given 100% creative freedom and choice of any artist alive or dead. What character do you write and who is the artist you choose?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I'm ok. Trying to bounce between this and a script that I have due today.

I would love to do a Daredevil run with JRJR.

[–]2thSweet Tooth 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Follow up, who would the villain be for your Daredevil run?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd probably dig up some of his 80s baddies from the JRJR/Ann Nocenti run. Typhoid Mary is someone I'd love to see as a major player again.

[–]papasmurf1977 5 points6 points  (1 child)

How many tofu dogs can you eat in one shot? With AND without buns...

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One. Maybe two. I'm a sophisticated man, not a monster.

[–]bn00880Jugmod 6 points7 points  (4 children)

betty or veronica?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Betty.

[–]2thSweet Tooth -1 points0 points  (2 children)

But Veronica has the money.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

But Betty is a nice person. Veronica has jerk-like tendencies.

[–]Lord_cloud 4 points5 points  (2 children)

ED when will we see DANK Man's cup?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Never!

[–]Lord_cloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AW COME ON!

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Welcome Ed Brisson! I heard that you’re leaving Cable for another Marvel book that’s in your bucket list. When can we expect an announcement on that book?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Soon, I hope! I honestly don't know when it'll be announced though.

[–]Digifiend84Captain Britain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if it's out in June, those solicits are next week so we should hear about it this week. If it's out in July, could still be a few weeks. They already announced some July launches though (such as Captain America #1 on 4th July, which is perfect timing!).

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

What's your dream project?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Daredevil, Punisher, Spider-Man, Batman.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

awesome, I hope you get the chance to write all of them! \(-_- )

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You and me both!

[–]Sithquatch 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Ed! It has been awesome to watch your growing success. I hope I recall this all correctly, it was nearly 10 years ago. I remember I was working the register at my LGS when you came in with MURDER BOOK in hand. The only thing close I had only read before was Brubaker/Phillips "Criminal", I couldn't speak on behalf of the owner but I bought a personal copy right then and there. And it was fantastic.

It has always stuck with me as inspiring and I have always wondered. In those early years, How'd you get connected with Simon Roy and the other artists?

I highly recommend "Murder Book" to anyone who likes crime stories. It is one of the few comics I will reread every so often.

Bonus Question: Any reading recommendation? (doesn't have to be crime/noir related, but it would be fantastic if it was)

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

That's cool! Which store was it?

As to how I connected with Simon and others, it's a bit of a long story.

From 1994-2010, I wrote and drew at least 100 mini comics. In 2010, I gave up drawing and focused on writing instead. I hate drawing, it turns out. But, because I'd been around for so long, I already knew a bunch of artists. Simon I knew because I'd published his first book (Jan's Atomic Heart) through my own short-lived publishing company (New Reliable Press). Mike Walsh I met because I'd lettered something of his. Jason Copland was local and I knew him from twitter, I think.

I'm glad to hear you dig Murder Book. It's still pretty near and dear to my heart.

As for reading recommendations: Right now, I'm reading Punisher, Saga, Paper Girls and Southern Bastards. If you can get your hands on any work by Gipi, I highly recommend it.

[–]333_pineapplebath 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Thanks for doing this AMA! I look forward to reading your answers!

What's your advice for someone who is 100% a writer learning lettering?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Learn Illustrator. Take a course, read a book, watch online videos, whatever. Illustrator is a PAIN to learn, so the better you are with it, the easier it'll be to learn how to letter.

DC put out a book on inking and lettering that's pretty good. Blambot has a lot of good resources. There's also a site called Ninja Lettering which is good.

One thing I used to do was find art without lettering online. Usually something that had been lettered and published. Transcribe the dialog and then take that page and letter it without referring to the already lettered version. Compare yours and the lettered one. Try to understand why the letterer made particular choices.

[–]pilgrimteeth 5 points6 points  (1 child)

  • How did you come up with the names of the various Kung Fu moves you’ve had to create in Iron Fist?

  • Have you ever/would you ever make your scripts available in a Patreon or something similar?

  • Any chance of your Iron Fist run being collected into one, larger volume like The Living Weapon and the two Immortal Iron Fist volumes?

  • Blink twice if you’re taking over on The Defenders! I would love to see you get a shot at Daredevil and certainly would love as much Iron Fist as I can get!

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • It was a combination of mashing up actual kung-fu moves and, at times, me inserting jokes for an audience of me.
  • Never thought about it. Maybe? I dunno.
  • That would be dope. I hope so!
  • Blinks once.

[–]damasco3Dr Strange 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Hi Ed!

I'm a big fan of both your independent and Marvel work. Iron fist has consistently been a treat.

First question was can you officially confirm that Iron Fist is cancelled? I know Dekal mentioned it on his ig but I've yet to hear anything more concrete

Any tease on where you'll end up in Marvel's "fresh start"?

Finally, I loved The Violent. I picked it up when I saw you at LA Comic Con and I was blown away. The characters felt very real and I never saw any of the twist coming. The book says volume 1 but I haven't heard anything about a volume 2. Any news to share?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

  • I'm not part of any of the fresh start books, but have a couple things in the pipes right now. I'm trying to be very careful about not taking on too much work.
  • The Violent 2 is coming at some point, but I really can't say when. Adam, Mike and I have all been hired by Marvel since and are trying to find gaps in our schedules to get it done.

[–]damasco3Dr Strange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying!

It’s true that Writers of Marvel have fought over titles Bendis left over?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

No. Not that I'm aware of.

[–]ChappieBeGangstaDaredevil 3 points4 points  (2 children)

This is less interesting so I'm going to choose to believe there was a knife duel

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Hey, listen, if you guys want me to fist fight Matt Rosenberg, I don't need an excuse. I'll do it and we can pretend it was over one of Bendis's vacated books.

Hey Ed! Love your Old Man Logan

  1. What is your favorite X-Men character and why?
  2. Which solo MU character do you think is seriously underrated?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say that Wolverine is my favourite X-Men. Growing up Canadian, it was cool to see a Canadian character ripping it up in the Marvel U. Plus, he's just a great character.

Good question. This is NORMALLY where I'd say Speedball, but would also say that Black Tarantula has always been a character I'd love to see more of.

[–]HellmarkImmortal Iron Fist 3 points4 points  (2 children)

What are your opinions on Danny not having a good shake last few years? Any thoughts on the show, or the Power Man and Iron Fist series that didn't seem to really have him in character? I was finally happy to see your series, as a big Iron Fist fan.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I love seeing how everyone handles Danny. Seems like every writer has a different take and leans into one aspect of his personality over another.

I haven't watched the show beyond the first episode. Was waiting to finish my run before watching it.

[–]HellmarkImmortal Iron Fist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you comment on it after you've had the chance. Really curious to see what you think.

[–]doestthouevenhoistDaredevil 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey Mr Brisson! Who has been your favorite character to write, and which characters do you want to write in the future?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's really tough for me to pick a favourite. I really like every character I've written, usually for different reasons.

I think my favourite supporting character so far was probably Sabretooth. The banter between him and Danny was a lot of fun to write and I think I got to show a more human side of him that we're not used to seeing.

[–]jamiedee 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey Ed! When are you finally going to get that Speedball book?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not soon enough.

[–]kralbenCyclops 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Thanks for doing this AMA, I have been trying to read a bunch of your stuff since I read you first on Iron Fist and loved it.

My question, If you could put together a team book to write, of any characters (DC, MArvel, and even non-comic heroes), who would you want to write and why?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 4 points5 points  (5 children)

The answer to this changes depending on the day of the week, but as of right now, I'd love to do a team book made up on my favourite 80s Marvel characters: Power Pack, Cloak & Dagger, Speedball. I think that it could be a lot of fun.

[–]kralbenCyclops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be really cool. Hopefully Cloak and Dagger gets a series or mini when the TV show comes out! We know who should write it now.

[–]Digifiend84Captain Britain 1 point2 points  (3 children)

So New Warriors then?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I keep forgetting that Dagger was ever in the New Warriors.

I don't know that I'd want it to be New Warriors, but who knows?

[–]Digifiend84Captain Britain 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Her, Speedball, and Alex Power were all NWs, that's why I mentioned that team.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Speedball was a mainstay for sure. I've somehow blocked that Alex was in it.

[–]Exhume125 2 points3 points  (3 children)

The recent Logan runs always seems to remind us his healing factor does not operate as it used to. But Logan still has yet to "Lose" a fight legitimately. Is his healing factor his only limitation with the aging? I doubt he became a better fighter in his years as he had given up that life for a number of years.

I know it's picky, but I try to always justify what makes Old Man Logan different. In a way I somehow picture how the stories would proceed if this was still our 616 Logan in his place, and I feel it would mostly be the same. The main difference in my mind is his ability to heal/fight.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

This is something that will soon become a major focus of the series, so I don't want to spoil too much.

I would say, though, that as Logan gets older he's had to fight smarter. Before he could just go berzerker and rip people to shreds. Not so much these days.

Again, I can't say too much, but you've touched on stuff that will be covered in the book, so stay tuned.

[–]Exhume125 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Without prying spoilers, I imagine this will come from the the minds and hands of Kingpin/Bullseye. Bullseye has been a character notorious for forcing low/mid-tier heroes to be at their best physically. Even Moon Knight, who Taskmaster remarks as being a master combatant, realizes his only strategy vs Bullseye is to run, luring him into an explosives trap. If Wolverine cannot shrug off the constant projectiles, I don't see how he wins, but at the same time, he got machine gunned about 200 times by Maestro's Hulk gang, and still won. What more do we need to do to put the hurt on OML? Stab him in the heart again?

Also, when you write characters with broad optimism, then jump into emotionally shut out characters like Logan, does your writing strategy or style become changed or affected to improve quality?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't want to get into it too deep as I worry I'll spoil story points.

I find characters who're darker or emotionally stunted easier to write, to be honest. I can relate to them more than I can overly optimistic characters. When I'm writing someone who's optimistic, I find it takes me a bit more to zero in on them.

[–]John-333 2 points3 points  (9 children)

As a reader of Cable and Old Man Logan, I have 2 questions:

1) Will Jean or Scott show up in the upcoming issues of Cable?

2) Since Logan is back, how will that affect Old Man Logan's already-messed-up life and his connections with the X-Men? Will they just come up with a way to send him where he came from or he will just end up being KIA? (I really hope that can be addressed well)

[–]marrtianchuchScarlet Spider/Kaine 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Good thing I looked thru the thread cuz my question is your 2nd one. Plans for Old Man now that youngish Wolverine is back

do you think there is such thing as too many wolverines?

which Wolverine is your favorite?

why did you bring back Mariko?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • I do.
  • Old Man Logan ;)
  • Bringing back Mariko was something I was asked to do by editorial. I think it made for a great story and I (hope) that it's something that'll resonate with readers.

[–]wkrorschach1975 1 point2 points  (1 child)

thank you for all your amazing work. first read your stuff back when you released sheltered and been following your work since. what are some of your favorite comics coming out right now?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

Favourite books at the moment: Punisher, Paper Girls, Saga, Southern Bastards.

[–]HistoryNerdi21 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey Ed,

What tips do you have on writing your dialogue?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite.

I try to make my dialogue sound natural, so often have clipped sentences and grammatically incorrect phrasing.

I often just listen in on other people talking and take mental notes of the way people talk and try to incorporate it into my writing.

I usually try to write all the dialogue on a page first, then break it into panels. I find this helps keep the flow of dialogue feeling fresh.

[–]ItsNotMyFavoriteBlack Panther 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If you could learn any language what would it be?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

French. My dad is French and I have about 100+ relatives on his side I can't talk to because they don't speak English and I don't speak French.

[–]ItsNotMyFavoriteBlack Panther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people always say this but it's true: it's never too late to start. My friend (mid 20s) has been learning Arabic to reconnect with his grandparents.

[–]MilkClot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Loved The Mantle, Sheltered, and The Violent. I know @ the end of The Violent you mentioned you wanted to come back to it eventually. But is there any hope for more stories on The Mantle? Or have you considered revisiting some sort of connected story with Sheltered?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No plans to revisit The Mantle, though I'd briefly toyed with the idea of a book about Necra and Shadow as private eyes.

In terms of Sheltered. Johnnie and I had spitballed ideas about doing 2 other series that would be loosely connected. Since Sheltered is a Pre-Apocalyptic Tale, the others would be: An Apocalyptic Tale and a Post-Apocalyptic Tale. They would be separate books and not involve the same characters. Spiritual sequels rather than actual sequels.

It's unlikely we'll be able to get around to doing it. Johnnie's doing his own thing right now (His book Firebug just came out through Image and is well worth your time). But, never say never.

[–]AlexDragonfire96Daredevil 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Hi Ed! Love your works since the two Secret Avengers tie-ins back in 2013. Anyway can you tell us something about your involvement in fresh start? What's your favourite series you are writing right now? And what's your favourite comicbook ever?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I don't have anything as part of the Fresh Start launch. I have a lot on my plate already, and don't want to take on too much. Want to focus on quality over quantity.

As for picking a favourite book, it's tough for me. I really love writing Old Man Logan. It's a lot of fun. Iron Fist was great too. Generally, I don't take on a book unless I feel I can enjoy writing it.

My favourite comic ever is a one shot by Gipi called THEY FOUND THE CAR. It's hard to find, but worth the search.

[–]AlexDragonfire96Daredevil 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not so hard for me. I am italian;) Anyway thanks for the answers

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dammit! Jealous. I have a bunch of his books in French and can't read them. I just stare at the gorgeous art.

[–]mikerhoaArseface 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey Ed! Absolutely loved Old Man Logan.

Were you disappointed that the Hulk's um, dubiously rendered progeny didn't find their way into the film adaptation? And do you see that idea (which I think is terrific btw) making its way on to the screen in the future?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have loved to see them in the movie for sure. I get why they didn't include them though.

[–]Cadygatorverified Creator:Ryan Cady 1 point2 points  (5 children)

What's your policy on tortoises, Ed?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

You know where I can score some?

[–]Cadygatorverified Creator:Ryan Cady 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I got your back. Reddit.com/r/tortoise

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

If you truly had my back, you'd smuggle one into Canada for me.

[–]Cadygatorverified Creator:Ryan Cady 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I dare not enter the Great White North.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then you don't really have my back.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

What are some of your personal favorite comics that you believe don’t get enough attention?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

That's a hard one as I don't tend to follow sales and don't know what other folks are reading.

I'm always reading Punisher, though that maybe sells ok? I thought Kelly Thompson's run on Hawkeye, with Leondro Romero and Michael Walsh, was great and am bummed it's no longer still going.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thanks for the recommendation are there any comics from independent publishers you enjoy?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Sure, a ton. Paper Girls, Saga, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank, Kill or Be Killed, Lazarus, Extremity, Gideon Falls, Southern Bastards.

I'll pick up just about anything by Greg Rucka, Ed Brubaker, Jason Aaron, and Brian K Vaugh.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you like Brian k Vaughn as well I think I’ve read just about everything he’s made if you have not read these already I suggest you read “the private eye” and “we stand on guard” .

[–]CapnShimmySaint Walker 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Knowing that you're such a huge martial arts movie fan, I thought you might appreciate knowing that, when I recommended the first arc of Iron Fist to the customers in my store, I tell them "It's like Game of Death but on an island with Iron Fist and intrigue and mysticism and it's awesome so just buy it." in one long run-on sentence. It almost always sold them on the book, and it's been a big hit, at least in my store. Also, thank you for including Shang Chi. He's a personal favorite of mine and it was great to see him.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's awesome to hear! Thanks for pushing it!

[–]MilkClot 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Any Cons that you plan on attending this year?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Doing a show this weekend in Victoria, then nothing until NYCC. Have another booked for November, but can't announce it yet.

[–]MilkClot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Come back to Fan Expo Dallas! I'm sure there's a lot more to it than just showing up lol and it's probably too late this year but I hope to catch you there again eventually. Thanks for answering all my questions today.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One day!

[–]ruststang2 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hey man, I'd love to meet you. Do you plan on popping up to calgary expo in the future?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Gah! I was supposed to do it this year, but I have to fly out to Halifax around the same time (looking for a place, probs moving there this summer) and so had to pull out.

Maybe next year?

Also, Calgary is our backup city if Halifax falls through.

[–]ruststang2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome man. Thanks for the reply. My wife is from New Brunswick, it's gourgeous out there. Love your work on old man logan

[–]john-j-chavira 1 point2 points  (1 child)

As a big Deadpool fan I always wondered what occured with Deadpool in the Old Man Logan universe, so what do think happened to Deadpool in the Old Man Logan universe?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He became a monk and no longer talks. He sustains himself on meditation. Runs a huge hippy cult.

[–]ajbrown141Spider-Man Expert 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Married Spidey or single Spidey?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Single.

[–]ajbrown141Spider-Man Expert 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks for the straight answer :-) (though I disagree!)

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I'm being honest, I can go either way. I do prefer Peter with MJ though.

[–]sukmahwangNightwing 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hi Ed, did you ever watch wrestling growing up? Who was your favorite?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I did.

Paul Ordorff was my favourite, but I met him when I was 10 and he was a complete jerk to me. Shortly after, Jake The Snake became my fave.

Used to live near the Oshawa Civic Dome and WWF came all the time. Got to go see it live a bunch. Haven't followed it since the 90s though.

[–]sukmahwangNightwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duuuude upvote for Jake the Snake!

I used to deliver paint for Sherwin-Williams and in our warehouse we had a whiteboard I would doodle on. At first I drew Hogan/HBK/Bret, but my boss and coworkers kept begging me to add more. I was instructed to keep it strictly 80's WWF but I'm only 24 myself so my knowledge of that era was definitely not up to par.

I was so proud of how my Jake the Snake turned out though. Wish I could share a pic.

Thanks for answering Ed!

[–]whiteguysky-Harley Quinn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

All time favorite comic series?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Three way tie: Ennis's Punisher Max run, Stray Bullets and Scalped.

[–]Boomerg12Batman Expert 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Hey ed I'm 17 and really want to break into the industry as a writer at some point, any advice would be amazing!

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Start small. Start writing 2 to 5 pages stories with a beginning, middle, and end and build from there. With shorter scripts, you learn more and can more easily find an artist.

Read as much as you can. Track down scripts by writers you like. Pick them apart. See what works and why.

Start writing now and don't waste time planning. That's not to say "don't plan", but don't dwell on it so long that it keeps you from writing. I run into aspiring writers at every show who claim they've been working on a project for 6 years (not sure why it's always 6 years, but it is) and yet they have nothing to show. Figure out what your story is and how it ends and then start writing. Don't worry if it's garbage. Just write. Once you've written it, put it away for a couple days and then come back and rewrite it. Do that a couple times until it's at a place that you're happy with it. Then move on to the next script.

Write.

Read.

Write more.

If you have a 200 issue epic, put it in a drawer for now.

Here are some great tips from Kelly Sue Decconick: http://kellysue.tumblr.com/post/56967566296/kelly-sue-deconnicks-tips-for-writing-ultimate

[–]Boomerg12Batman Expert 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you so much man, this means so much you have no idea. Also another real fast question if you don't mind: in terms of networking (getting my name out there) what do you feel the best routes are to take. Bringing a script/finished products to conventions and things along those lines?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to cons is a great way to network.

However, no one will read a script. You're going to have to find an artist to get the comic done -- this is why I always suggest shorts.

Get the comic done and put it online (make it free to read) and make print copies to bring to shows.

[–]NeitherIndependence 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Pretty standard question: What are your top 10 favorite Marvel/DC comics? And are you a fan of the new star wars movies ?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

TOP 10 COMICS (limiting to things on shelves now, and in no particular order): Punisher, Batman, Thanos, Mighty Thor, Unworthy Thor, Daredevil, Flash, Invincible Iron Man, Defenders, Hawkeye.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re: Star Wars. I do like them. I had a couple qualms with the latest, but overall really liked it.

[–]model563 1 point2 points  (1 child)

A book like Sheltered can reflect some very real people and very real situations. Was there some personal insight you had into that world? Or was it just research and intuition? And as something so real and relatively grim, what was the motivation for telling that story?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of research on preppers before starting. There was a good 6 months where I did nothing but research and listen to prepper podcasts. It was pretty intense to be honest.

Initially, I was researching them because I wanted to tell a post-apocalyptic story and wanted to know how those who were actively preparing for a cataclysmic event thought the world would look afterwards. Somewhere along the way, I realized the story was in them and their waiting, their near fetish for said cataclysmic events.

Sheltered spun out of that.

[–]cmacgamesMan-Thing 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The banter between Iron Fist and Sabertooth is awesome. Any chance we will see the pair return in other stories from you?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One day, I hope.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks for the AMA!

Letterer question: Superhumanly loud dialogue is usually depicted with a burst or double outline balloon. If the same person roars unintelligibly, would you switch to sound effect block letters?

Creator question: What seemed to be the most effective thing you did to promote The Violent? Besides more writing :)

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would just use a nonsense word with lots of consonants. GHRLBBBL or something.

The Violent was a tough one to promote. It's a bleak as hell crime story set in Canada. The best I did, I think, was hit up comic shops and send them a PDF of #1 to try to drum up sales. I made myself available for interviews and tried to encourage friends to promote it.

[–]oneeyed_king 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Hi Ed, I'm a British guy with a great idea to write for a comic. I've done creative writing in the past and want to put pen to paper... But I just don't know where to start. How did you get into writing comics and do you have any tips for someone like me?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

My story is loooooong. I started drawing and self-publishing in 1994 and didn't land with a publisher until 2010. So, my path isn't one I'd suggest.

Basically, to start, write comics. Keep them short. 2-5 pages. Find artists to draw them and show them around. Put them online for people to read. Keep plugging away. Build a readership. Start talking with artists and try to find someone who's on the same page as you and work up a pitch together. Send the pitch to publishers, rinse and repeat.

It's a lot of work and usually takes YEARS to break in.

[–]oneeyed_king 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Holy shit you actually read this and replied! Sounds like you put a long shift in, so I'm glad you are getting your just desserts!

Thanks man, Im gonna look for a pad and start now seeing as I'm in an airport waiting around.

Thanks again, and all the best for the future.

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hop to it and don't stop!

Best of luck!

[–]redo_art 1 point2 points  (2 children)

We’re would you say is a good place for rookie artist to look for a job in comics

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Used to be Digital Webbing, but I'm not sure where these days.

Depends where you're at. If you're pro level, go to cons and show your work to editors and other writers/artists.

Maybe hit up writers you like and show them your work. Even if they're not looking, they may know people.

If you're not quite there yet, join comic creator groups on FB (I'm sure there are some here on Reddit too) and show your stuff off.

Most publishers won't touch artists until they've done something at other, smaller publishers. It's a good way for them to suss them out to see if artists can deliver consistent work on time.

[–]redo_art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it’s ok for a comic portfolio to be completely digital?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can't wait to see you at Capital City comic con this weekend in Victoria!

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See you then!

[–]RyDragon53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is, in your opinion the most underrated indie comic in the past year? Of all time?

[–]ccnfler 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Mr. Brisson,

Thank you for doing the AMA.

1.) What book was the easiest for you to work on and why?

2.) When you did Sheltered, did you know the ending before you started?

[–]edbrissonVerified creator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) I know this sounds like a cop-out, but each presents its own challenges. None have been easy.

2) The ending was the first thing I wrote. We figured the end and then built to that. There's a scene in #2 or #3, where Lucas is talking to one of the others in his kitchen and he completely lays out how things will go for them if they're discovered and that's pretty much how the last issue plays out.

[–]redo_art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any tips on building a fan base and selling prints

[–]ComicWriter2020Spider-Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve worked on old man Logan as in the original story? Or as in newer stuff? I’m not up to date on marvels comics, or much of dc comics past dark knights metal come to think of it.

[–]Digifiend84Captain Britain 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm currently a Marvel Exclusive writer, working on CABLE

Interesting that you say that considering your run actually ended last issue. Or are you going back to it, your workload eased by Iron Fist's cancellation?
