A tourist takes a picture of graffiti reading ‘Tourist: your luxury trip – my daily misery’

also, yelling at tourists instead of petitioning the government, which created the conditions for overtourism, is so stupid. every complaint I hear about tourists could easily have been solved by better planning from the city.

Most of it seems to stem from Airbnb, which the government has the power to regulate, and they actively choose not to. Put a cap on short-term rentals, or even ban it like we did where I'm from (british columbia, canada). having any homeowner be able to suddenly add an uncontrollable supply of short-term accommodation means that the number of places for tourists to stay does not stay stay in line with the actual capacity of the city.

Too many tourists renting cars and making traffic worse? Raise taxes on car rentals or improve your public transit so that fewer people drive through the city.

If your city is suffering from overtourism, petition your government before you start spraying people on vacation with water guns.

Can my boss take my phone?

bottomlessLuckys
commented

No, but you should probably just do your job rather than go on your phone. Don't make the excuse that other people do it, that doesn't matter. And I don't believe there's "nothing to do". When was the last time the keg fridge was cleaned? Could the windows use some windex? Is your bar station cleaned? Is everything stocked for the next bartender? Do you have any customers at the bar that you could chat with?

Do kids around here collect lizards in the summer?

bottomlessLuckys
replied to C0gn

Indigenous people exist in modern society, incredibly fucking racist of you to say otherwise.

Building roads and cities the way we do in Canada is unsustainable. Places like The Netherlands are far better for this, and ecoducts are incredibly common there.

I am also talking about Earth in the year 2024. Humans are not invasive. We come from this planet and have evolved with nature for a very long time. Do not take a region like BC that has been human inhabited for thousands of years, where humans have played crucial roles in keeping the ecosystem balanced, and then claim humans are all invasive. if you want to say that modern, post industrialized way of life isnt sustainable, thats fine, but dont just claim humans are invasive.

indigenous people did none of that, nor is it inherently "anti nature" to build cities and roads. there are sustainable and unsustainable ways of living, and the indigenous people who lived here before europians lived sustainably and supported nature. the fact that you read my reply where i already made this point and decided to double down is sad.

dont project your bullshit consumerist way of life on others, especially not indigenous people who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries.

no, they're not. if that were true, "indigenous people" wouldn't mean anything. humans are a part of nature and always have been, in fact we have been a keystone species for centuries. indigenous people have helped maintain the balance of ecosystems for a very long time, and calling them invasive is just ignorant and an insult to the work they've done in managing populations and stabilizing ecosystems.

What lane are you supposed to use in this situation

bottomlessLuckys
commented

i am canadian and havent driven in germamy yet, but in Canada the answer would definitely be red. you're turning from the left lane, so you should go into the left lane. there is less interference with cars turning right from the other side this way. it may be that both lanes are allowed, but red is definitely a safer choice than blue.

Moving to Germany as a Canadian?

ah ok well thats too bad that you can't get it through descent. as a canadian though, you do qualify for a youth mobility visa which you can do in toronto, or you can just move to germany, register your address there, and apply at the nearest foreigners office (this is the way im doing it). although doing it my way, you won't be able to start working until you get your visa, so it may be better to apply in canada.

german citizenship law will let you become a citizen after 5 years of living there, but you can do it in 3 years if you can show high level of integration. you might be able to do this given your background.

good luck!

What makes these countries score worse than North Korea on the Freedom of the World report?

absolute dictatorships are always "safe" countries. my right wing grandparents in brazil are always looking back to the nostalgic military dictatorship days where there was less crime but the police would still shoot you for being outside past curfew.

cubans all rely on gray market jobs that are technically illegal. cubas quality of life has also improved recently due to mass privatization of several industries.

socialized healthcare is pretty common everywhere, so comparing it just to the USA says more about the USA than it does about Cuba.

the only way i was comparing cuba to NK btw was the fact that the gray market is how most people make money, and that the communist governments put up with it because even they acknowledge their communist system alone will cause everyone to starve.

bottomlessLuckys
commented

despite what american propaganda may make you believe, the average north korean does not in fact live in abject poverty and eat rats to survive, or get dragged down the street for minor offenses. yes, north korea has a brutal dictatorship, but for the most part, north koreans work gray market jobs to earn a living, which the government does not formally allow, but they also dont strongly enforce (similar to cuba). people have access to public transit, healthcare, schooling, etc, unlike war torn countries such as south sudan. north korea also does actually participate in global trade, even with europe, although they are heavily sanctioned too.

i am in no way supporting north korean government, and it is in fact terrible and poverty is common, but it is nowhere near as bad as American propaganda makes it seem, nor is it as bad as being stuck in a war torn, disease ridden, desert with barely any infrastructure.

5th place is also still pretty fucking bad for a country that hasn't been at war for half a century.

As of this year, germany has changed its laws regarding citizenship. the process is shorter now, and dual citizenship is allowed.

im a canadian who has moved to germany as well, and i would definitely have rather moved to the netherlands if it weren't for the fact that the netherlands doesn't allow dual citizenship. the netherlands is by far superior in my opinion, but i want an EU citizenship so im just living in germany until i can apply for that. also free education in germany sounds nice.

Moving to Germany as a Canadian?

bottomlessLuckys
commented

I'm also a Canadian who just moved to Germany. Despite what lots of people on this sub say, housing is far lore affordable in Germamy than in Canada, however most Germans rent rather than buy, and it can be quite complicated getting long term housing as you will need to get a job in Germany first to be considered. It sounds like you have German ancestry so you may be able to apply for german citizenship straight away based on that, but Im not sure on the specifics. Bear in mind that southern germamy is a bit more expensive than the rest.

our system is set up so that ignorant pieces of shit like you can whine comfortably about how unfair things are. just because your life isn't perfect at the moment doesn't mean "the system" is set up against you. sure there are problems, but as usual the solution to those problems have their own challenges and downsides. someone has been patiently explaining to you that corporate tax rates are set at a competitive level to ensure that corporations pay a fair share, but also to make BC an appealing place to set up business. You're refusing to understand that and you're arguing with people here when clearly you don't know what you're talking about.

PS - Ireland has one of the highest GDP/Capita in the world and it's primarily due to low corporate tax rates, on top of having good infrastructure, high education, etc. Ireland's competitive corporate tax rates make corporations want to have their HQ in Ireland, and so they get to collect taxes from more, bigger businesses, and that improves the quality of life of their citizens. raising their corporate tax rate would lower their tax revenue.

Also, who the fuck says that corporate taxes collected and individual income taxes collected need to be the same? there are way more individuals than corporations, so you can't just compare these things 1:1. They could be paying the same rate, but one may still be higher or lower just based on which group is bigger.

I worked for BC Cancer, in a research lab, and I did a lot of Flow Cytometry experiments. A single tiny vial of fluorescent antibodies I used to stain cells each cost more than my monthly wage, and we use hundreds of them. The machinery, reagents, and equipment all throughout the lab costs a stupid amount of money. The most well-paid people in our lab did not even make close to what it costs just for reagents, and if you ask me, they fully deserve the wage they earn.

There is no overhirng problem in the medical industry. Nurses are overworked, and we don't have nearly enough specialists or GPs to deal with the demand for healthcare, and that causes a lot of people to need even more medical care, which drives costs up even more.

how stupid do you have to be to think "stop being greedy" is a good economic take. if a corporation suddenly decides to "stop being greedy" like you suggest, they're only going to lose to greedier competition. why do you think every bullshit communist coffee shop eventually goes out of business?

we (usually) try to structure our tax policies in order to persuade corporations and people to act upon their greed to save themselves money and to better some sort of cause. land taxes benefit those who use the least land, carbon taxes benefit those who burn the least fossil fuels, liquor and tobacco taxes benefit those who dont drink and smoke. i'd be more keen on seeing taxes on corporations that promote more sustainable activity than lazy tax policies on just income.

low corporate taxes do keep corporations in BC though. raising the tax wont necessarily raise revenue if all those corporations move their headquarters to Alberta.
