If you think ABSTUDY is complicated – you’re right. ABSTUDY is not a single payment, but a group of payments designed to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with the costs of study or undertaking an Australian apprenticeship.
This session will provide an overview of ABSTUDY, covering the seven different awards payable under the ABSTUDY scheme, and how to navigate each award’s distinct criteria linked to high school, undergraduate university study and postgraduate degrees.
We’ll explain the claims process, eligibility criteria for each award, and the type of assistance a student or apprentice may receive. We’ll cover the allowances payable, the rules about study loads, and the issue of reasonable time limits. We’ll also outline the appeals process – which is not the same as for most other Centrelink payments.

We had a successful trip last week to Far-West New South Wales. We spoke with a specialist and generalist community legal centre and several community service providers in Dubbo.
Thanks to the Western NSW Community Legal Centre, Women’s Legal Support, Dubbo Neighbourhood Centre and Disability Advocacy for hosting us and participating in Economic Justice Australia’s regional and remote women’s access project.
Our team also visited Nyngan and we would like to say a special thank you to the Nyngan Local Aboriginal land council for their hospitality and extend that thanks to Aunty Raylene Weldon for opening up our community workshop with a Welcome to Country on Wongaibon lands.
We would also like to thank the many services who attended and participated in both the domestic and family violence and Centrelink community training and research interviews. Thank you for allowing us to share our knowledge of social security law and for providing insight into the issues regional and remote communities face when accessing and maintaining Centrelink entitlements.

Our free monthly training webinars are upskilling community workers so they can support vulnerable clients in navigating our complex social security system.
