Terminator but the T800 somehow got sent to a fantasy world with magic ? Or something like that?

moral_mercenary

A T-800 is essentially a golem powered by technology instead of magic. Check out Feet of Clay or Going Postal by Terry Pratchett. Not quite what you're looking for but might scratch the itch (unstoppable tanky robot like thing in a fantasy setting).

This background on a Star Trek episode

Uh... Nu Trek is not generally bad. Discovery is not to everyone's taste, but the bipoc and lgbtq representation is phenomenal (they win awards for it). Picard is admittedly not the best, but it features the Bi Queen Seven of Nine. Picard season three was pure nostalgiaand I loved it. Strange New Worlds is simply fantastic and has some lgbtq representation, some of the best Trek ever made. Lower Decks is the best Star Trek since DS9 and has lgbtq representation including Mariner who is bi.

Trek has always been at the forefront of pushing the boundaries for bipoc and lgbtq (admittedly, they could have done some more here in the past). Apparently, Gene Roddenberry wanted scenes with groups of people making out in the background on alien planets and stuff, like all genders mixing it up. The studio execs shut it down lol.

I think so too (Riker is definitely bi as well). Just the look on Kirk's face when Spock surprises the crew after his hiatus in The Motion Picture says it all.

Russell T Davies determined to keep Doctor Who feel-good show in ‘tough world’

If you want some more modern sci-fi with positive vibes, I'd recommend Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It's got cool concepts, big flashy special effects, good writing, and possibly the best hair on TV

Totally fair. I think it's great to be inspired by other cultures, so long as it's being done respectfully and especially regarding marginalized groups such as north american indigenous people.

How do you all handle cultural sensitivity when worldbuilding?

It's a big topic with big feelings. And I don't think we're going to solve it in a Reddit thread and I can only speak from my own point of view (a white man living in Canada). People who looked like me came here and literally tried to erase the cultures of an entire continent of people. My people's legacy is colonialism and capitalism. I didn't lead the genocide, but I sure as hell have benefited from it. So for me taking from those cultures (appropriating) is a crappy thing to to. For example wearing a jingle dress (or in your example a culturally important headdress) and claiming that it's mine. This isn't the same as allowing myself to be inspired by First Nations people and their history in my fictional worlds.

And for what it's worth indigenous people may not wear those types of head dress in battle, but they do wear them in other important cultural and ceremonial contexts. If your culture says a similar head dress is important to your culture, then it should be respected as well. That being said, Indigenous North American people may have copied your people at some point in this style (unlikely because of history, but whatever). That's being said if you'd had such a discussion with a NA indigenous person and they brought it up and your culture has a similar thing then talk about it like adults. "Oh your people have feathered head dress, so di mine! Check this out! (Provides example and then you both discuss how the Imperialism probably fucked over your cultures in similar ways.)"

I'm not saying gate keeping is the correct way to go, but we can all stand to be aware and respectful of other cultures. Especially those that are actively being oppressed. I think it's ok to be inspired by other cultures, but it's not ok to steal from them and claim it as your own.

This isn't quite the same situation. The indigenous peoples of North America are not centuries dead ancient cultures. They're still alive and they're victims of genocide. Their cultures were specifically targeted to be erased as part of the colonial powers that moved in. I think being respectful of other cultures is important, as you say avoid being offensive is good advice.

Don't be too hard on yourself. There's a lot going on here, but asking someone who goes to school and work to commute 45 mins to a location with no heat to roll dice endlessly without much role play and gets annoyed when you don't understand their home brew is a lot.

TTRPGs may not be for you, but don't let this situation color your view of all games. This one sucks, and you don't owe these people anything. Just drop the game and find something that works for you when you have capacity.

I think it's fair to express your feelings to the GM first. Expecting the players (not necessarily the characters) to be courteous and kind to you is not the same as expecting them to walk on eggshells.

Having a player say "anyway" or "moving on" is quite dismissive and not the type of environment I'd want to play in.

Talk to the GM. Write it down like you have here if it helps. If the GM doesn't help tp change the atmosphere then you can always leave the group. Don't stick with a group of people that ignore or invalidate you irl or in a game.

This is a subreddit for news and discussion of Old School Renaissance topics. We primarily focus on D&D (LBB, 1st ed. AD&D, etc.) and the retroclones. Other Old School games (Traveller, Runequest, Tunnels & Trolls, et al) are of course open for discussion. This is *not* a place to rant about how (your least favorite edition) sucks! In fact, I hope discussion arises about how later editions do things right, and how to incorporate them into OSR-styled games.
