In an alternate universe this 1965 Disney produced Lord of the Rings exists.

Yeah kinda wish War of the Rohirrim had this vibe. My brain is still struggling to process anime style art and animation on a LOTR story.

John Cho doesn't know what's going on with the Star Trek movie series (and that's on purpose)

Chris Pine has talked about how every movie like this needs to make a billion dollars or everyone thinks it’s a loser. Star Trek can’t do those numbers. The 2009 Star Trek movie made $368M in 2024 numbers adjusted for inflation. Paramount can only make Star Trek movie film releases if they’re okay with numbers maxing out around there. Which no one is and the stars are too expensive now.

Now watching: Waterworld (1995)

It was the most expensive movie of all time at the time due to all the practical sets. In 1995 it cost $175M plus another $100M in marketing. The budget alone is about $336M in today’s cash. Really shows how budgets have ballooned that $300M+ is sort of normal nowadays for bigger movies.

Blockbuster: The rise and fall of the most famous movie rental store

We had an independent video store I loved and my first small glimmer of capitalism and competition was when a blockbuster opened 1 mile down the road from them. They just kind of gave up immediately. Didn’t change any policies or compete against blockbuster in anyway. And sure enough a year or two later they were gone.

Yeah it’s a limited release. He’s working with regal so they have a bunch of locations in some major cities with it. But again it’s limited. It’ll be streaming sometime soon.

Anyone find the Picard bridges too dark?

The thing the new set designers don’t understand is these aren’t military ships that go on assignment and come back. They’re literally homes. The enterprise D was the full time home of over a thousand people. They’re basically exploratory cruise ships where people live their whole lives. So it should feel homey and comfortable. These new ships with steel floors and dark colors would be far less joyful to actually live on.
