“AI is not allowed in this building”

Hello, IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again?

“AI is not allowed in this building”

The title is an actual quote from my boss who is the director of IT. Keep in mind, this guy knows little to nothing about IT or our infrastructure but thinks he knows more than everyone. He wants us to remove any trace of AI from our endpoints such as Copilot and Adobe’s new AI because he thinks it’s dangerous and can somehow make malicious decisions on its own. He’s 70 years old and doesn’t understand basic computer functions but insists on enterprise AI being dangerous. We told him Siri, which he uses all the time, is technically an AI and he had nothing to say about that. This man is allowed to conceal carry a 1911 with Donald Trump’s name engraved on it around the office. I want to pull my hair out.

  3. 3 months into the internship and now they are outsourcing everything so no job for me to do.

  4. Today HR says let's carry out your exit process.

  5. I was like bruh tf 🤣😭 why you guys even hired me at first place?

Almost 4 years in software engineering and that's what I have learned.
  1. The cost of time and engineering is more higher than that of servers.

  2. Developer productivity and a technology's ecosystem are more valuable than a runtime's efficiency or the raw speed of a programming language.

  3. Programming languages that are often considered slow and criticized for technical deficiencies or poor design are usually the most used and favored for building real-world software, from small to large scale, due to the flexibility they provide to engineers.

  4. The choice of a tech stack, often said to depend on project requirements, is misleading and untrue; in reality, it depends on the expertise of the senior engineer and team.

  5. Real agile teams don’t follow agile practices rigidly; instead, they develop their processes to maintain agility.

  6. Best practices are often biased.

  7. Healthy communication is key to a team’s success.

  8. GitHub is the best tool for tracking and managing software development.

  9. The first priority is to make it work.

  10. Mastery of the basics makes you advanced.

Are more developers burning out? Or am I just seeing things.

Have around 9 yoe here and just wanting to sort of vibe check to see if what I see is what y'all see.

The past few months I have spoken with so many devs who are just done with it all. Story is pretty similar for them all 6 - 15 yoe typically. They hit their limit and are changing careers. At this point I've talked to at least 6 devs who have dropped the field completely. The number is closer to 15+ when considering those who are still debating staying in. Are you all seeing something similar where you all are at? Less more?

Could it be the post COVID bust killing everyone? Or just a cycle of fatigue that's existed in the field for years?

During coding interview, if you don't immediately know the answer, it's gg

Once the interviewer pastes the question in the Coderpad or whatever, you should know how to code up the solution immediately. Even if you know what the correct approach might be (e.g. backtracking), but don't know exactly how to implement it, you're on the way to failure. Solving the problem in real time (what the coding interview is actually supposed to be or what many people think it is) will inevitably be filled with awkward pauses and corrections, which is natural for any problem solving but throws off your interviewer.

And the only way to prepare for this is to code up solutions to a wide variety of problems beforehand. The best use of your time would be to go to each problem on Leetcode, not try to solve it yourself (unless you know how to already) and read the solution directly. Do your best to understand it (and even here, don't spend too much time - this time would be more valuable for looking at other problems) and memorize the solution.

The coding interviews are posed as "solve this equation" exam problems but they are more of "prove this theorem" exam problems. You either know the proof or you don't. You can't do it flawlessly in the allocated time, no matter how good you are at problem solving.

P.S. This is more relevant for FAANGs and T1 companies. Many of other companies don't even have coding interviews anymore, and for the good reason.
