r/Rivian is the largest and most active fan-run auto-enthusiast Rivian community. We discuss the electric vehicle company, Rivian Automotive, along with their products and brand (not the stock). In 2023, Rivian produced 57,232 EVs and delivered 50,122. In 2022, Rivian produced 24,337 EVs and delivered 20,332 — up from 1,015 in 2021. Rivian produces the R1T, R1S, EDV, and will be releasing the R2, R3, and R3X in the next few years.

Flipper Zero is a portable multi-tool for pentesters and geeks in a toy-like body. It loves to hack digital stuff around such as radio protocols, access control systems, hardware and more. It's fully open-source and customizable so you can extend it in whatever way you like.
I've had my Flipper for almost 2 years but somehow I was unaware of the Tesla fob recordings to open the charge port door with sub-GHz. So of course I tried it today. Yeah, it works and it's cool. And after the second time, the novelty value wore off 🙂 Still, it's cool.
But there's something I don't understand with this hack: I tried it in the parking lot when I went do the groceries after work, and there were 2 Teslas parked next to each other, and a third behind me not to far. I hit Send and sure enough, all 3 popped their charge port door open.
And I can't help thinking: really?? Telsa cars are packed full of electronics, they're smart enough to drive themselves (mostly). But somehow Telsa outfitted all Tesla cars with a dumb 433 MHz receiver all programmed with the same static code?
That sounds so incredibly dumb I can't believe Tesla did that. And I'm not talking about resisting mischievous Flipper owners. I'm talking an engineer at Tesla thinking "Yeah, there might be several Teslas parked in the same parking lot and they'll all flip their charge port door open when any one of the owners uses their remote to open their own charge port door, but that's fine."
