Hiring from within the unit, department, or uniformed service may be preferable because those individuals are already medically and physically qualified to serve. Also, since the military has great education benefits, more and more service members are getting degrees and hiring from within helps retain qualified members. For someone that’s interested in commissioning but concerned about competing with internal hires, I would recommend that they consider enlisting and applying for officer positions after becoming part of the unit.

I'm sure I'll age out of the military at some point, but I would like to stay until 25 years of total service.
