I don't think they can do that. The copyright for the original cartoon is expiring, but trademarks never expire, and Disney will always have the trademark.

The reason the Pooh slasher movie was able to be made is that the A.A. Milne book copyrights expired, but the character depictions weren't based on any specific trademarked design.

Remember the overreaction that was Twilight Princess getting an 8.8 from GameSpot where a ton of people thought it was too low? If it had gotten a 9.0, there probably wouldn't have been a shitshow...but at the same time, a .2 difference is barely enough to matter, especially for how arbitrary scores are.
