That’s the sliding scale we came to. When I had insurance that wasn’t total dogshit, it was $15. Then it went up to $80 on self pay. New insurance would be $110. Not sure how much longer I can pay $240 a month for therapy.

Oh thanks. I use the DT as a stream-of-consciousness diary now that Twitter is dead.

I had a lifetime of dental trauma following this one instance, not just the emotional stunting. I have a very small mouth, so I had to have multiple teeth pulled to relieve crowding. I'm missing 4 of my adult teeth. The crowding meant the rest of my teeth were very crooked, so that got me 3 years of painful braces. I also have a very high palate, which combined with the size of my mouth gives me a very sensitive gag reflex. Add that to the GAD and really the entire dental profession seems designed to upset me.

One of these days I'm gonna have to suck it up and go, but it's gonna have to be one of those places that gives you a Valium first.

I have one strong memory of being told to stop crying.

I was a small child, couldn't have been older than 7 or 8. It was at the dentist's office (also known to children as Hell). I had just had a tooth pullled. It must have been a doozy, because I still know the exact spot in my mouth where it was before it was extracted and I get a little jolt in my nerves when my tongue brushes past it.

I was in so much pain. I was bleeding a lot. It was a damn molar, after all. I couldn't stand the feeling of the gauze inside my cheek, drying out my mouth and forcing me to taste my own blood waiting for it to stop. I was crying hard. I remember my dad took me outside the dentist's office (we were in the waiting room while my brother was getting his teeth done) and told me that I needed to stop because I was going to upset the other children. I don't remember if we went back inside or if we stood out on the concrete in the hot Florida sun waiting for my tears to run their course.

And my father meant well. He was an incredible dad. He was warm and emotionally open. He never intended to perpetuate anything along the lines of "boys don't cry, suck it up, be a man, tough it out", he just didn't want the other kids to see me and think "What the fuck are they doing back there?" But to this day I struggle to express negative emotion, mostly out of concern for the people around me. As a man, oftentimes it feels like the worst thing you can do is make someone else uncomfortable. Instead I push it down, waiting for it to either manifest in self-destructive behaviors and habits or erupt at inappropriate times. And I have the pleasure of paying a very nice woman $65 a week to try to work out this among other dysfunctions.

Anyways, I haven't been to a dentist in 12 years.
