Trumps plan to reduce childcare costs

Trump and immortality should never be uttered in the same sentence. If that man lives to 100, I'm going to reference the OP's comment as the one who doomed us all.

Young voters aged 18-24 in German Thuringia overwhelmingly voted far-right AfD

SomeCalcium
commented

Should stipulate that with "Young white men without college degrees" vote overwhelmingly Republican.

The issue for Republicans in the US is that young white men without college degrees won't start voting until they're in the mid to late 30's so Democrats have an advantage with young voters since the majority of active voters are in the 18-30 bracket are all college educated.

I feel like the whole McCain influence is horrifically overstated. Arizona is purple because Dem's started winning Maricopa county.

Governor debates today and tomorrow

I think Dems have a fair shot with either. Harris will likely carry the state by about 5-8 points which will impact Republicans down ballot. Ayotte isn’t as popular as Sununu, and abortion rights will likely be a bigger factor here than immigration.

It’s unfortunate that even with good conditions they’ll be unlikely to win the Executive Council since it’s so terribly gerrymandered. Decent shot to flip the House and Senate.

Strands #185 - Wednesday, Sep. 4, 2024 Daily Thread

That’s a cool tidbit. I literally visited this subreddit for the first time because of this word. I had to look up a list of national parks to even guess at it. Seems that you’d have to be from the south west to even have a decent guess at that one.

Sober You Discusses Last Night's Receipts With Drunk You | Make Some Noise [S3E6]

Chemistry matters a lot. I think the chemistry was off here.

Mainly, Sarah didn't mesh super well with Lauren. I felt like all their prompts together didn't work. As an example, with the final prompt Lauren wasted absolutely no time with the chest burster bit rather than giving the other two a chance to get in on the gag. Sarah didn't even do anything in that bit.

I felt like someone like Izzy, Josh, or Jess would've done really well in Sarah's slot, and Sarah would mesh much better with someone more patient like Vic or Zac who would've done something with the "CEO of Google" set up.

Hope we see more of Sarah since I think that's the first time she's been on the show. Would rather not pass judgement on her comedy style when we just didn't really get that much of her.

Teens are losing interest in school, and say they hear about college 'a lot'

SomeCalcium
replied to chronosxci

if you don’t prefer STEM majors you’re told that it’s a useless degree.

This is more of a reddit thing than anything else. STEM is certainly valuable, and we should focus on it, but men tend to pursue degrees in the STEM field more than the liberal arts/healthcare fields. Reddit is mostly comprised of men so you get a lot of pro-STEM at all costs rhetoric.

I'm hoping that eventually we see more initiatives that push men into the healthcare and child care fields. We really should strive for more gender disparity in early childhood education, for example.

What other author is likely to experience their own “Melville revival?”

She’s been in vogue for well over two decades. Not exactly due for a revival.

This pile is unfortunately bigger than the pile I have previously read (there is so much to learn), anyone here have any suggestions of what I should read next?

The Odyssey is a bit more entertaining on the whole. It may be worth visiting within your next few reads as many characters in the Iliad show up in the Odyssey, at least in passing. It may be best to read it while those characters are still fresh in your mind.

I'm from New Hampshire. Grew up in Manchester. I can confirm that the Red Arrow Diner is mediocre, but New Hampshire isn't great for food in general.

The main reason why Red Arrow Diner does well is because they're one of the few restaurants that's open 24/7. There's a bunch of bars on Elm Street and Manchester and a lot of drunk people eat there at like 1-2am after the bars close.

Election Discussion Megathread vol. V

My only pushback is that Republicans have no real bench to speak of. That isn't to say that they wouldn't recover somewhat between now and then, but I have a strong feeling that even with another Trump loss that they won't begin to truly shake MAGA Republican deadweight from their state-wide elections for another cycle or two.

The only active Republican that I think could even win the Presidency is like Nikki Haley. Other than Larry Hogan, the rest of their field is dogshit. And before someone says Sununu, I'm from New Hampshire. He's a dogshit candidate too. I hate when people throw his name around because they've never listened to the guy speak.

Harris and Walz to sit with CNN for exclusive first joint interview since campaign began

I suppose are definitions of right wing/left wing just differ which makes more sense. Broadly speaking, my definition of left wing would be someone that supports the Democratic party and the inverse for right wing/Republicans. I'm mostly use it as a catch all to define the pulse of a subreddit. I wouldn't consider this subreddit nearly as left wing as something like politics, votedem, or even fivethirtyeight, but it has a left leaning bias due to people that hang out here.

Like many of you here, I was banned from modpol for God knows what at this point. I don't remember that sub being so right wing. It feels like it's really shifted over the past few months. Reading through the threads there is physically painful. Just a ton of right wingers hand wringing over utter nonsense. This whole interview stuff is such a nothing story.

By contrast, this sub has become increasingly left wing, though one benefit is that the quality of posts here has improved as the better users from modpol migrated here post-ban.

That's fascinating. I figured it would be the inverse, but I wonder if the Trump campaign is worried that Trump will insult Kamala.

Is this the end for Trump

SomeCalcium
replied to DramaGuy23

To me it's going to be more about whether Harris believes her own hype and starts campaigning to run up the score with her base like Hilary did.

I don't think there's enough time for Harris to even do that. If her first real week of campaigning is any indication, she's going to be spending all of her time in one of the seven swing states with the occasional stop elsewhere for fundraising purposes.

It also wouldn't be the end of the world for her to make campaign stops in places like Texas, Florida, and Ohio as there are competitive Senate races there she can help prop up.

She also seems to have a whole army of surrogates to send out unlike the Trump campaign. Send Obama to places like North Carolina and Georgia. Park Walz in the rust belt. Send Shapiro all over PA.
