Wire brush any flaking rust or flaking paint. Brush , roll or spray in a squirt bottle Ospho. It will convert the rust to an inert material. Let it sit until dry. The rust will turn black. Either paint on or spray on some quality black. It’s an area you won’t see. Nothing wrong with painting or rolling on farm implement black paint.

My 97 Laredo bought new by my wife’s parents still going strong. Without a doubt THE best snow vehicle we have owned. And the most comfortable interior, for me anyway. Only 130k and serviced regularly by me. The straight six just chugs along. Needs a whole new exhaust this summer and the hood repainted. But other than that a fantastic rig. Definitely got our monies worth.

When idling wiggle the PCM connectors and see if it replicates an issue. Often times thru age they become loose. Even when secured and clicked into place. Some have zip tied, some have used a large hose clamp, some have used a bracket clamping between the PCM and the connectors. Sandwiching them tight. Google image search Jeep ZJ loose PCM connectors. Many have chased their tails with this. Me included. Hope this helps.
