88 Twin Cams

Psychoticrider
commented

I have run 90 MPH for hours on the interstate with an 88 that had a 95 inch hig bore and cams, so really not much different from the 88.

Running from a bad rain storm in South Dakota, I ran 100 MPH for about an hour.

I put 80,000 miles on that bike before I replaced it.

As long as the engine is in good condition, it will handle a hard run just fine.

Simple, tell him you don't want to ride with him if he drinks. If he wants to go to a bar, tell him, "See you later, and leave."

I realize he is your friend, but you two have different opinions, and that is fine, but if he insists, maybe you need to find other friends more in step with your values.

I will have a beer once in a while while riding, but just one, and only with a meal, and I don't ride like I am nuts after. I play it cool and pay attention.

AITAH for wanting to adopt a child with my wife?

Psychoticrider
commented

If you want to adopt, go ahead and adopt! I fail to understand why your 22 year old son has any say in your decisions!

It eas nice to bring it up eith him, but it isn't his decision, just like he can decide to be single and not have children and you have no say in his decision.

I had an '03 R1. Getting to the cams with the engine in the frame is nearly impossible.

I bought my R1 with a bad engine, bought a used engine, and made one good engine out of the two. I got the cam timing wrong and didn't notice until the engine was in the frame.

I found that I could pull the rear half of the exhaust and the radiator and pull all the engine mount bolts except the lower rear and lower the engine down with a jack. It was much easier than trying yo remount a removed engine as when I was done, I just jacked it back up and put the mount bolts back in.

I have ridden for decades and never pulled over when I don't deserve it. Even when I rode an R1 for a few years. I suspect many of these riders that "get pulled over for no reason" are not as innocent as they claim and were praying stupid crap shortly before. I had a friend who got pulled over fairly often, but he was doing burnouts often and riding wheelies on city streets, plus he had a loud pipe on his bike. Also, his bike was painted up in weird colors and had a stunt cage. He claimed innocence, but anytime I rode with him, he was just asking to get stopped.

How much is this worth?

Psychoticrider
commented

What would a stock Shovel in decent shape be worth? $5K - $10k tops? IMO, a custom bike is worth less than that. The Revtech doesn't help. I would be in the $3K to $6K range, but some guys will pay more, I won't.

I parked in a national park, riding a motorcycle and pulling a tiny trailer. All the spots for cars were taken, so the only parking left was for autos pulling trailers. I found a spot that was painted off, no parking, but I parked in it. I was not blocking anything. When we were going to leave a park ranger was looking over the situation and told me he should write me a ticket for parking there. I explained the situation and felt that it was a reasonable place to park, not blocking anything, and he backed down. I mentioned they should label some small spots for motorcycle only, as there wasn't any specific motorcycle parking.

Crashed dyna fix

Psychoticrider

I would bet money the frame is bent. Look into that first. You might have to strip the frame and ship it off to someone that can verify it is straight and repair or condemn it.

Motorcycle frames are not very tough. One good tumble like your can ruin the frame.

Paid it off early

Harley credit definitely gives dealers a kick to use their financing. Cash is no longer "in the driver seat." That is do "old school." I have close friends in a dealer, and they have told me what the numbers are, and they push financing. They get a big chunk of change back. Same with selling extended service contracts. Close to half of that money goes back to the dealer when sold at full price.

It works the same for all dealers, including auto sales.

Yup. I have owned three Harleys, a '05 Ultra, '10 Ultra, and '16 Limited. Probably will not own another. I ran a 2018 BMW R1200RT for a few years, too. Over 200,000 miles on those four bikes. My wife refuses to ride a Harley again, and she rides with me all the time. I am not interested in riding a 950 pound bike any longer, and we want a touring bike as we travel. I have a screwed up left shoulder from a bike wreck and getting a Harley touring bike off the stand with my wife, and luggage is a bit of a battle. We have about 7,500 miles on the Goldwing, and both of us like it. The Wing weighs about 850 pounds but feels much lighter.

Harley could do better with some things. Better ride for one. I don't dislike them, but other brands work better for us. I really wished they had continued with the Vrod engine and developed it unto a touring bike.

Cash doesn't mean anything these days. The dealer gets a kick back from the finance company for initiating the loan so they would rather finance than do a cash deal.

I bought a 2023 Goldwing late last fall and didn't have the cash available. I paid it off this spring.

Tires can look good, but they get hard and rotten. Look at the date codes.

For example, I bought a Yamaha R1 that didn't run. I got it going and started to ride it. Any time I would get on the throttle, it would just spin. The tires would slide in hard corners. The tires had a lot of tread life, so I was confused. I thought R1s were wheelie monsters. I finally looked at the date codes, and both tires were around ten years old, so I replaced them. They turned it into a completely different machine. It would stick in corners, wheelie with a blip of the throttle.

Pool heater tied to the customers heat pump.

I have pulled the coil on compressor change outs depending on the unit. Some are easy. Some are tougher.

I remember the first time I did it. It was a 5 ton Trane, and I was killing myself reaching over the coil. I looked at how the lines were run and had the coil set aside in maybe a minute. It went back just about as fast.

And it still had a charge

Psychoticrider

I replaced a condensing unit that looked about the same My boss told me to pick up a new unit and go to this address and replace the condensing unit. I get there, and it is smashed, but oddly, still running. Even the fan blade still clears the coil. I found out someone was moving g snow and hit it with a skid steer.

I swapped out the unit and pulled the compressor for my personal "stock" as I wanted AC for my garage. A few weeks later, I replaced another unit that had a bad compressor. It ended up at my place, too. I drooped the used compressor into that condensing unit and it has been cooling my shop for twenty years.

Dealership sold my tires

Psychoticrider

Be calm and let them know of your dissatisfaction. Tell them they can mount the other tire for the price of the tire and no labor. Let them know your time is worth something too.
