My Driveway

Avarria587
commented

It looks like a mix of packed gravel and old asphalt. Is this the case?

You should be fine, honestly. The only surfaces that are very difficult for a street bike to ride on are loose gravel and mud. Sand is supposedly difficult to ride on, but where I live, there is no sand.

When I first got my house, I had very loose, freshly laid gravel. It was like riding on marbles. I had literally zero traction. I couldn't even ride my bicycle on the gravel. My driveway is a mix of chip seal and packed gravel now. It's much more bumpy than asphalt, but it's not bad at all. It's similar to what you have in surface I think.

Bike sitting in pouring rain

I wouldn't worry about it at all. The only advice I would offer is you shouldn't put a cover on the bike while it's wet. it will trap the moisture.

This looks incredibly bulky and unpleasant to ride. Also, there are less than 100 hydrogen stations in the entire US.

I went in the opposite direction. I was raised as a socially conservative democrat. We used to have those back in the day in the south. Now? I feel pretty comfortable with the democratic socialist label. Ditching Christianity is what opened my eyes to the world around me.

I am 37 for what it's worth.

That's robbery. You can buy one new for that price and that's even including the bullshit dealer fees.

Help with weight of bike

Avarria587
replied to Cyypho

I am 5'7, but I am all torso. It's really more the weight for me than the height. I just don't have the strength or energy to deal with heavier bikes. I want something that's basically and overgrown bicycle at this point in my life. The only reason I got something bigger was I needed to go on the interstate. As soon as that's not necessary, I am looking at a small cruiser like the Kawasaki Eliminator or a small, retro-styled standard.

I dunno. I have about 127k, but that's over almost six years. That doesn't seem like a solid way to make money.

Help with weight of bike

Avarria587

Similar situation. I went from a z400 to an NC750X. I miss my old bike when in my driveway.

I've found getting off the bike and pushing it with my body against my hip helps a lot.

My next bike will be smaller I think.

Walked out of MSF today

Avarria587
commented

I took the class three times.

First time? I got really, really sick due to sunburn and heat exhaustion. I could barely control the bike the first day. I constantly stalled and couldn't keep it straight. I did not go to the second day.

The second time, I took it on a 50cc scooter. I had a blast. It was cold and rainy. I did much better this time. I struggled with the figure-8s, though. It wasn't as much of a skill issue as a visualization issue. I couldn't figure out how navigate the turns. Maybe I am just not the sharpest tool in the shed. I got my license either way.

I then rode a scooter for six months.

I then took the class a third time. This time, on a proper motorcycle. It was a Suzuki Van Van 200. I'll never forget that thing. I had a blast. It was fairly cool and cloudy. Perfect for learning. I did decent overall, but I still was a bit shaky on the Figure-8s.

After that, I went and bought my last motorcycle - Kawasaki z400 ABS. Good first bike. I now have a Honda NC750X DCT. I love the automatic as it reminds me of my scooter days, but that little Suzuki Van Van was something truly special and nothing beats the rush of my previous bike.

This is all to say that you shouldn't give up. My dumb ass rides all the time now even though I could barely ride in a straight line when I first started.

Automatic motorcycles

Avarria587
commented

I've rode both. My first was CVT, second manual, and third DCT. They all have their ups and downs.

I don't like DCT that much. This is mostly because low speed maneuvers are more difficult. Plus, unlike a CVT on a scooter, manufacturers don't put anything on the left handlebar. You have no clutch control and there's no brake you can deftly adjust as needed at very low speeds while trying to turn around your bike, go down a ramp, etc. 90% of my complaints could be solved with a rear brake on the left handlebar.

CVT was great but heavy. It does have to wind up, though. You're also limited to scooters.

Manual was good all-round, but it got tiring in the city.

Edit: For what other people think? Why worry about others? When I am out on the road, all that's on my mind is enjoying myself. To hell with what other people think.

I definitely can't be the only one

Avarria587

I whiskey-throttled my motorcycle for the first time a few weeks ago. I was in my driveway and was trying to turn around in the gravel after pulling out of my storage building. I lost my balance and grabbed the throttle. My visor was up as it was very humid. Long story short, a piece of bamboo missed my eye by a few inches.

The visor stays down now.

Shed ramp slick in rain. Too early to add grip tape?

I recently had a ramp built a few weeks ago. It's very slippery when it rains. I want to add grip tape. The wood has not yet cured. Is it safe to add grip tape, or should I wait a few months?
