So I guess some of you might be wondering why an account that's never posted here, commented or
even liked anything should be using this subreddit to announce their retirement. Well, first this account wasn't entirely inactive here. From the spring to fall of 2021 I did lurk quite a bit however I didn't dare like, comment, or post anything. The reason why? It's because I had a secret. A secret that I had been carrying for a large portion of my life. A secret that I didn't tell anyone, not my family, closest friends, or even my partner to whom I'd been married for 12 years at the time. In fact, I'd gotten so good at lying and hiding it that I even managed to convince myself for many years at a time that it wasn't true. My secret was that I wanted to be a woman, something I thought would be so shameful that no one would accept me and that if I told anyone my life would be ruined. In my eyes, it was so shameful I even hated myself sometimes for thinking it.

In winter 2021 that started changing. I began to learn more about myself and with that, I realized I didn't know myself as well as I thought I did. I quickly learned that the thoughts, feelings, and experiences that I'd been having all my life added up to more than just wanting to be a woman. I was transgender, I was a woman. Unfortunately, anxiety isn't as easy to break as your egg. Even though the realization was there I was still terrified that people might find out. It took several months of reading articles, browsing this and other subreddits, and just contemplating my existence. Eventually in the fall of 2021 I no longer just wanted to read but wanted to take an active part in the Reddit trans community. However, I was still scared of people finding out my secret, plus an unfortunate choice of usernames MANY years ago made me decide to create a new "alternate" account. This account you might be more familiar with, u/a_secret_me, a name I felt was far more significant given how long I'd had my secret.

I used this account as my "main" account for most things on Reddit, and u/a_secret_me for anything trans-related. I started slowly at first, but gradually the more confident I felt the more I'd post and share. Thanks in no small part to the people here I began sharing my secret with the world. At first, it was anonymous to strangers on the internet, but eventually, with encouragement, I started sharing with people in my real life. First with my partner, then my parents, kids, in-laws, etc. I began seeking medical transition and starting HRT in March of this year and eventually started socially transitioning in July of this year. I walked in my first pride parade as myself in August, and I'm now out to more or less everyone I care about and regularly present in public as myself. With each step I felt tremendous anxiety but once complete I felt even more relief and euphoria. My secret felt like less of a burden and something I had to hide, and more just something I hadn't told people yet.

The other thing I noticed happening was the more I accepted and presented as my true self the less and less I used this account and the more and more I was using u/a_secret_me. Eventually, it became clear that my "alternate" account wasn't that alternate anymore. Just a few days ago I got a notification that it was my 9-year anniversary of being on Reddit. I looked back and realized I'd done almost nothing on this account for the last month whereas I'd be posting daily on u/a_secret_me. I knew that despite the sentimental value, this account wasn't me anymore and it was time to move on.

So here we are. One final post on one of the subreddits that quite literally changed my life. Thank you to everyone who helped me get here, and I'll see you on the other side.

Tap emergency savings or line of credit first?
Budget

So unfortunately our family has had some personal stuff come up this year which is starting to get a bit expensive. The past few month's expenses have been greater than income and our usual savings account balance is starting to dwindle. This shouldn't be a forever thing but I'm predicting it won't get better for at least 6 months to a year. I have two options to make up the shortfall an emergency savings fund (I call it the "in case I get fired fund") and a line of credit. Both have about the same amount of funds available, and I'm fairly confident my job will be safe even with the possibility of a recession. So which should I tap first to make up for the short fall?

P.S. the plan is to fully replenish or pay off either account as soon as the budget stabilizes.

You can't be morally ok with only part of your job. Either do your full job or get a new one.

AHH ok 2+4 weeks is a bit better. Maybe a little low still but that's in the reasonable range.

How long had you been working there (including time with the previous ownership)? 2 weeks certainly sounds very low.

I've seen #RageAgainstTheMachine with text on the screen about abortion and gun violence in their US shows. They didn't let Canada off the hook at #Bluesfest.

Can you switched to a fixed rate mortgage? Most mortgages will allow it. You'll be paying more than you are now but at least you'll have piece of mind that if interest rates go crazy high you'll be safe for at least 5 years or so.

Toronto eyeing new plan to ban cats from going outdoors unless on leash

da_guy2
commented

We adopted a cat from the humane society that had always been an outdoor cat. We intended to keep him as an indoor cat but he had other ideas. After about 4 months he'd start hiding by the door and whenever someone would open the door a crack he'd bolt. Eventually, we decided it would just be easier to make sure he was properly vaccinated chipped and collared and just let him out. Yes I know it wasn't ideal but for an older cat that's made up its mind you're options are limited.

Driveway bylaw 'a blunt instrument' Barrhaven residents say

da_guy2

We live in a neighborhood with townhouses. They each have 2 parking spots in the five way and a small lawn. Several neighbors have paved over the ENTIRE lawn and park 1 car in the garage, 4 cars in front of their house and some even park a few in the street. I feel like when purchasing a house you should be able to estimate how many cards you need and buy appropriately.

A fast is "a period of such abstention or self-denial". For most fasts, there are no set rules on when to start or how long they should last. Your own instincts are usually your best guide. A fast can be from traditional things like 3 solid meals, from social media like Reddit, Google Plus or Facebook or even quitting smoking for a day.
