This may be merely anecdotal, but in recent years it seems that the number of unfunny April Fool's Day jokes has exponentially increased. In the best case, the joke falls flat; in the worst case, it hurts someone's feelings. It costs you nothing to take a step back, consider what you're thinking of saying/doing, and then to decide whether to go forward with it. (This is good advice for many comments/actions too!)
