Right, but doing nothing is much better than most people expected of him.

I think it would have taken some effort to be worse than Truss... but he's done much better than most people expected.

Great idea. You could have some kind of system where groups of people get tother to form a party, decide their policies and then people could vote for which they prefer. Perhaps it could be called a 'Democracy'?

Gary Glitter 'freed from prison' after serving half of sentence for abusing girls by HowAboutThisNameNow in worldnews

then returns home to the UK and does it to three more girls.

I'm in no way defending this cunt - but he was put in prison in 2015 for offences committed in 1975 in the UK against those three girls.

Brexit: Mistakes were made on all sides, says Leo Varadkar by Ameliasco in worldnews

[–]chriswheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Election turnout in the UK is always over 50% - https://www.statista.com/statistics/1050929/voter-turnout-in-the-uk/ - so the average person does vote.

And of course, people get their information from the news, which includes politicians, journalists etc - I'm not sure how that is a problem or how it could be improved? It's just the way the world works. I'd argue that the recent trend towards people forming their political opinions based on social media content and memes has made things worse.

The average person doesn't vote.

Turnout for the Brexit referendum was 72.21% - or do you mean something else?

Removing the word 'probably' from a quote so you can feign a sense of outrage over a reddit comment? You're a zoomer alright.

Hi everyone, I’m Dominic Nicholls, Associate Editor at The Telegraph, covering the war in Ukraine. Ask Me Anything! by TheTelegraph in worldnews

[–]chriswheeler 20 points21 points  (0 children)

However, it looks like the wing of the Republican Party that is less inclined to continue to support Ukraine in the way the US has so far has been very popular. The Republicans that are winning seem to come from the wing of the Party that leans into continuing the support.

Those sentences seem to contradict, should the first read '...has not been very popular'?

One in six people living in England and Wales were born outside the UK, census data shows | UK News by [deleted] in worldnews

But this report is from the ONS, and is published on schedule every 10 years - https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/populationandmigration/internationalmigration/bulletins/internationalmigrationenglandandwales/census2021

Sure, the media sensationalise it but that appears to be done by left and right leaning outlets. Which politicians do you think are involved in this?

Rishi Sunak to be next Prime Minister after winning leadership contest by HowAboutThisNameNow in worldnews

Yes, Reddit seems to amplify this kind of thinking for some reason. Most of the people I know in real life are much more reasonable/pragmatic.

UK jobless rate hits lowest since 1974 as people quit labour market by Quantum_II in worldnews

[–]chriswheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can argue about the definition of 'unemployment', but the point here really is the trend over time. The ONS have their definition of 'unemployment' and have measured that over time.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peoplenotinwork/unemployment/timeseries/mgsx/lms - it's clearly trending downwards to a low point at the current time.

The government have got lots of things wrong, and we can argue the reasons for it, but it's hard to deny that unemployment rates (however you measure them) are at historic lows.

If you have an alternate measurement, which shows them trending up, I'd love to see it.

Where are you getting 'a couple of hours a week' from? The average worker on a zero hour contract works 25+ hours per week.

Mainly its house pricing. If you are on benefits or signed off due to mental or physical health in social housing, you would be working about 20 hours a week just to break even with renting a room and paying council tax.

Something really needs to be done about this point. Maybe reduce benefits over time to incentivise people back to work?

Why wouldn't they? A zero hour contract doesn't mean you work zero hours.

What's bonkers is trying to tell people how comfortable they will be on a scale that's based on the relative boiling and freezing points of water.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit says:

0°F was established as the freezing temperature of a solution of brine made from a mixture of water, ice, and ammonium chloride

Yea. That makes much more sense!
