Rookies with a 40-20 game in NBA History

In tonight's win over the Suns, Victor Wembanyama joined an elite club of players with 40-20 games in NBA history.

The club:

  • 29× Wilt Chamberlain

  • 8× Walt Bellamy

  • 3× Elvin Hayes

  • 2× John Drew, Oscar Robertson

  • 1× Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bob McAdoo, Shaquille O'Neal, Willis Reed, Victor Wembanyama

Kudos also to Spencer Haywood (4×), Marvin Barnes (3×), Dan Issel (2×), Julius Erving & Artis Gilmore (1×) who accomplished this in the ABA

A discussion of top minds arguing whether Bam or Dominayton is the better nba player

Who ya got for the future.

Ayton while lackluster on defense his first season, took a huge jump his 2nd one. Bam too faced this, but more as a result of playing behind whiteside his first season.

He’s probably never going to be a good as bam guarding the perimeter, but he’s still damn good at it for a center. I’d argue he’s already/is on the path to being the better rim protector, like a Rudy Gobert with better perimeter defense by a little worse rim protection.

On offense, I honestly don’t know. I think it’s Ayton because his mechanics show potential, he has excellent footwork, and his post game and finishing are pretty elite.

Bam is the better passer, but I honestly can’t think of anything else he does better. Dribble?

So for the future, who is your choice?

The Dallas Mavericks (21-8) have the best clutch record in the NBA, ahead of the Lakers (22-9) and Nuggets (25-12).

The Mavs have been the best clutch team in the NBA this year. If Kyrie was eligible for awards he would be in the running for Clutch Player of the Year. He routinely takes over in the 4th, like yesterday against the Kings when he shot 100% and sparked a run to bring the Mavs back from down 10 to win.

The team's clutch success isn't just Kyrie though. Especially lately, it's because of defense. The Mavs can field clutch lineups with multiple plus defenders along with Luka and Kyrie, like Exum, PJ, and Gafford. PJ has been shutting stars down since he came to Dallas and Exum has been great too, especially last night on Fox.

Compare this to last season when the Mavs had an abysmal record in the clutch post-trade deadline (5-13, 3rd worst in the league ahead of only the Wizards and Pistons) because our best defensive options were Powell, Kleber, Bullock, and Frank.

What's the NBA equivalent to scoring 50 points in a Euroleague match?

Is it 60 points because there are 48 minutes instead of 40, or is it maybe even higher because it's tougher to score?

This week in r/nba 10 years ago (March 24 to March 30, 2014)

The mods deleted last week's post probably because of the many links to the videos that aren't up on the reddit posts anymore. There won't be any such links on this post, but I'm sure if you want to see one of the videos, enough Googling can get you there.

Here are the top 3 most upvoted posts every day from March 24 to March 30, 2014:

March 24, 2014:

  1. Adam Silver: "I'll meet with LeBron and kill sleeved jerseys if players insist"

  2. Compilation of Jermaine O'Neals pump fake free throws

  3. Kyle & DeMar show the love.

March 25, 2014:

  1. [deleted by user] Rockets GM Daryl Morey admits general managers browse message boards and gain trade ideas/other transactions from fans

  2. Joakim Noah foul on Roy Hibbert.

  3. LeBron game winner, Bosh game-saving block vs. Portland

March 26, 2014:

  1. Nick swaggy p young premature 3 celebration Vs. Knicks

  2. Dirk has the most ridiculous shot chart in the league.

  3. Pop when asked why Patty Mills didn't play more last year: "He was a little fat ass."

March 27, 2014:

  1. DWade Pump Fakes the Pacers

  2. Kings Basketball

  3. Heat and Pacers fans fight. From /r/heat

March 28, 2014:

  1. Rockets Fan Catches Hakeem-Autographed Ball, Gives to Kid

  2. Shane Battier to retire after this season--would take "an act of God" to change his mind

  3. REPORT: Executives around the NBA believe the Lakers will try and trade their lottery pick this year in attempts to land Kevin Love.

March 29, 2014:

  1. The Toronto Raptors clinch their first playoff berth in six years with the 105-103 win against the Boston Celtics

  2. Patty Mills newest creation #frogging

  3. Report: Kevin Love would consider Knicks and Bulls in addition to the Lakers in free agency

March 30, 2014:

  1. The Seattle SuperSonics have been to the playoffs more recently than the Minnesota Timberwolves.

  2. Why Kevin Love should come to San Antonio in 2015

  3. Can we all take a second to marvel at what the Milwaukee Bucks have done this year?

Teams (or player on team) mentioned:

Heat, Timberwolves: 4x

Spurs: 3x

Pacers, Rockets, Lakers, Raptors, Bulls, Knicks: 2x

Warriors, Mavericks, Kings, Blazers, Celtics, SuperSonics, Bucks: 1x

Players mentioned:

Kevin Love: 3x

LeBron James, Patty Mills: 2x

Jermaine O'Neal, Kyle Lowry, DeMar Derozan, Joakim Noah, Roy Hibbert, Chris Bosh, Nick Young, Dirk Nowitzki, Dwyane Wade, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shane Battier: 1x

Probably the most significant thing to come out of this week was Nick Young's classic celebration of a missed three. Also Kevin Love's free agency was all the talk and Patty Mills was staying relevant in his own ways.

Brunson is currently second in the league in drives per game at 19, second only to SGA at an absurd 23.7, yet his FTA% per drive is only at 12.1 percent. Only players with a worse whistle in the top 10 are Garland and Dejountae. However, Garland seems more intent on driving and kicking, as indicated by his pass percentage. The average FTA% in the top 20 is 15.1% so he's sitting a good 3 percent behind everyone. If you narrow it down to just All Stars in the top 20, excluding Brunson, the average FTA% is 19.5 percent! The guy does not get the All-Star treatment at all.

From watching games, it seems like Brunson gets punished for being so good at finishing through contact. Players are constantly hip checking and swiping across his arm. For all the people complaining about Brunson being a flopper, he should really be embellishing contact a lot more often.
