VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - H to He Who am the Only One LP 70 w Pawn Hearts LP 71 w God Bluff LP 75 w Still Life LP 76 w Vital Live 2LP 78 w Repeat Performance LP 80

REPOST Request:  Looks like I am missing the early two and 'The Quiet Zone/Pleasure Dome" among others.  Per Discogs:  Formed in the UK in 1967 by Peter Hammill, Chris Judge Smith and Nick Pearne (now deceased). After a period of activity during the 1970s, the band broke up (although not for the first time) in 1978, seemingly for good.

The "classic" line-up of Hammill, Guy Evans, Hugh Banton and David Jackson, reformed the band again in 2004 and released the studio album Present. Since September 2006 Van Der Graaf Generator has worked as a trio, without David Jackson.

AMERICA - st LP 71 w Hat Trick LP 73 w Hearts LP 75 w Hideaway LP 76 w Harbor LP 77 w View From The Ground LP 82 w Greatest Hits LP & CD 75

REPOST and ADD ON:  Finally decided to tackle all this stuff from Goodwill having only posted the CD of greatest hits while still missing the 72 & 74 albums but the GH has three of each mostly.  Turns out their debut (first song a little messed up)  is another one of those prize vinyl sounds we are so fond of here like the first ELP, Country Joe and others...from a comment text file I threw in while researching the second album:  America's debut album is a folk-pop classic, a stellar collection of memorable songs that would prove influential on such acts as the Eagles and Dan Fogelberg. Crosby, Stills & Nash are the group's obvious stylistic touchstone here, especially in the vocal harmonies used (compare the thick chordal singing of "Sandman" and "Children" to CS&N's "You Don't Have to Cry" and "Guinevere") and the prominent use of active strummed acoustic guitar arrangements (contrast "Riverside" to CS&N's "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes").                       A comment also included with others:  Charlie Ricci said...

I believe America's debut was their best CD but Homecoming is weaker only by comparison. They are another band who started out very strong and gradually sunk to middle-of-the-road mediocrity. However, their 2007 comeback album, Here & Now is outstanding and was one of the best CDs of the just completed decade.

Perplexio said...Charlie: There is some great stuff on their debut and I'd even go so far as to say there are some songs on the debut that are better than anything on Homecoming. But I still find Homecoming to be more consistent and to have a better "flow" to it than their debut.

What makes this unusual, the 3 members of America were born in England to US Servicemen. Whether it was a startlingly brilliant imagination or a rapid osmosis of California culture upon moving to the States listening to Homecoming one could easily forget these guys weren't native born Californians.
