Comparison of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 vs Tesla basic Autopilot

Comparison of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 vs Tesla basic Autopilot

I rented a 2023 Corolla recently, which has Toyota's latest driver assistance technology TSS 3.0 (Toyota Safety Sense). I used it on freeways (including heavy stop and go traffic), local roads, and compared it to basic Autopilot in my 2023 Model Y.

Summary: I was blown away by TSS 3.0, and found it to be better than Tesla's basic Autopilot (TACC + Autosteer). I had always read that Tesla had the best Autopilot (which may have been true a few years ago), but it has been surpassed. (In fact, I had rented a Corolla about 5 years ago, and its lane centering was awful, just ping ponged left and right.)

  • TSS 3.0 can do everything Tesla basic Autopilot (TACC + Autosteer) can do.

  • The Corolla has radar plus camera.

  • TSS 3.0 adaptive cruise is smoother at braking when traffic slows/stops compared to Tesla. It starts gentle braking earlier.

  • TSS 3.0 can change lanes without disengaging lane centering (called Lane Tracing Assist or LTA). It is super annoying in Teslas to have to re-engage Autosteer every time you change lanes. Especially since that will cause Autowipers to re-enable.

  • TSS 3.0 LTA is very smooth and allows the driver to gently nudge or override steering without disengaging. With Tesla Autosteer, it's always a very abrupt engage/disengagement. When you engage Tesla Autosteer, it jerks the car onto Autosteer's path. And to disengage Tesla Autosteer, you have to fight against Autosteer, and it when it disengages, the car jerks abruptly. TSS 3.0 behaves completely differently. You can nudge the steering (e.g. 1 degree), and the car will let you steer it temporarily. Then when you relax, it will center you again. It's completely seamless. This allows you to temporarily move within a lane (e.g. to avoid a pothole, or to keep extra distance from another vehicle) without disengaging. Basically, Tesla Autosteer feels like you're driving on rails (either on or off the rails), whereas TSS feels like it's a magnet to the center of the lane (you can guide it away from center, then it will gently drift back to center).

  • Sensing driver attention: I've gotten used to torquing Tesla's steering wheel with the exact amount of force without disengaging it. But it's usually easier to do with only one hand on the wheel, which is not the safest position. TSS 3.0's driver attention was much easier, the tiniest bit of resistance is enough to register. Basically, if your hands are on the steering wheel, you won't need to consciously torque the steering wheel, even with both hands at 9+3 or 10+2 (which doesn't work with Tesla because that would balance out the torque).

I hope Tesla will improve their Autopilot (TACC + Autosteer) experience, because they are being surpassed even by entry-level, economy vehicles like the Corolla. Sure, I've learned how to work around all the quirks, but Tesla can do better.

Tesla (semi-officially) fixed the "notchy" steering wheel in 2023.38

I know this was a somewhat common problem. My mom's Y (made in mid of 2022 in Giga Berlin) also had this.

We reported it a year ago and were told this is a known problem and Tesla will fix this via Software Update (was hard to believe, i really thought this was a hardware issue).

Well i recently asked my mom if she still has this issue and she said she hasn't. I always read the release notes of the updates but they never mentioned it. Notateslaapp also never listed it (as undocumented feature).

Well, turns out Update 2023.38 fixed it. Nice to have some official confirmation.

Which is a better Electric Vehicle Stock RIVIAN or TESLA?

Rivian has chances to grow and bring new ideas, but its struggles to make profits and where it stands in the market need to be looked at closely. Meanwhile, Tesla has a history of making profits, leading in technology, and being a big player in the market. That's why many investors prefer Tesla for stability and growth in the electric vehicle industry.

Openpilot is so much better than Tesla Autopilot!

My car was in the shop, so I borrowed a Tesla for 4 days, and it was a breath of fresh air when I finally got my RAV4 Hybrid back. Tesla really needs to learn from the cooperative driving experience that Openpilot, Sunnypilot, and Dragonpilot provide.
