The Killing (1956) Directed by Stanley Kubrick

He had an incredibly eccentric life, never wanted to be an actor just got into it via a random photo someone took of him at a yacht race iirc.

Also: fantastic movie. Elisha Cook was great in this, one of my favourite of his performances.

Iirc your best chance of catching films that have Criterion releases are via BFI player and Studiocanal, both available as extra channels on UK Prime. A BFI subscription is the best of the 2, and pretty good value at £4.99 a month

Hawke not only acted, but produced and co-wrote the screenplay. He treads the line between heart-rending and bonkers in this so incredibly well. I will never understand why they didn't push it for the Emmys, but to be honest I also don't think he's the kind of actor who gives a shit about awards.
