I think your best bet here is to be temporarily as gay as possible. Not related to the game you mentioned, but in general taking the player through the birth and childhood of a character is a pretty powerful experience, I wish more games did it.

Many points of the storytelling of Witcher 2 are enhanced by playing the first game first. I appreciated the fact that they didn't waste time/resources handholding people through the events of the first story. It's much more like a movie -- Godfather 2 didn't spend 1/2 an hour retelling the events of the The Godfather.
