I really like this line from that recent Paul Wesley interview. It's so nice to hear that someone actually took the effort to truly understand an iconic character instead of just playing him as the pop culture stereotype.
When I heard that SNW is going have some Kirk, my first reaction was "oh nooooo", I was really worried that it will be turned into a joke. After the first season, I wasn't really impressed, but I didn't hate it either. And then, S2 arrived....
I'm saying this as someone who loved TOS and original Kirk from the first second, as someone who still regularly watches TOS, as someone who would probably pick TOS as the most rewatched Trek show of my life that yes, I'm glad we have some Kirk in SNW. Especially after the first two JJ movies, it's so important that people can watch a modern Star Trek show with the "real" James T. Kirk instead of the reckless playboy from 2009/Into Darkness. I like how seriously Paul Wesley took this role, how he sometimes does similar things that Shatner did, for example his hand gestures or the way of speaking, but he does it in a very subtle way, without ever turning it into a parody. Yes, the real Kirk was an ambitious, smart, very professional and by the book guy who is also helpful and kind to people.
Kirk was teased by one of his close friends for studying too much, he was also mocked by Finnegan for it, he reported his friend Benjamin Finney without hesitation, etc. This feels like the writers respecting the original material, canon and the fans of TOS.
