Ben Burtt in 1980. He was the sound designer for Star Wars and created the sounds for the Lightsabre, R2-D2, Darth Vader's breathing, blasters and tie-fighters etc.

The ST sorely missed the genius of Ben Burtt

Watching WallE with my kid I realized again just how brilliant Burtt is. The sound design is so important in Star Wars. The new movies completely failed in this regard. Can you name any new iconic sounds in your mind?

The prequels you must admit gave us many new iconic sounds.

Burtt is a genius but he was completely cut out by JJ because he is an insecure little turd

in Return of the Jedi (1983), the imperial colonel who does a Wilhelm Scream is played by the sound designer, Ben Burtt. It's his own voice, not the original Wilhelm clip. Burtt actually popularized the Wilhelm Scream (and coined the name) when he put it in Star Wars and tons of other movies

My biggest problem with The Last Jedi is that Ben Burtt wasn't involved

After reading The Sounds of Star Wars (which is an extremely entertaining read), I watched TLJ in hopes of pointing out new, ear-candy sounds from the imagination of the man himself.

There were no sounds in the movie that really stuck out to me as much as the other films. The scene with the most potential for the coolest sound had no sound at all (which I was fine with).

I later learned that Ben Burtt wasn't even invited to join the sound design team, and even he didn't know the reason. Why did the execs kick him to the curb like this? I don't know much about sound design, but from what I can tell, Burtt is a sound design master—he has four Oscars. This is the guy who added the Wilhelm Scream in Star Wars as a joke because he heard it once in a cowboy movie. The Wilhelm Scream is now one of the most recognizable sounds in cinema. HE THREW HIS WEDDING RING AT WIRES TO CREATE LASER GUNS.

The man practically invented how we experienced Star Wars. Vader's breathing. Lightsabers. Seismic charges. Podracers. Even Chewbacca's and R2D2's noises. This is the man behind it all, and he isn't even invited to be a part of the new Star Wars era. It makes me very upset, and I really hope he gets to be a part of Solo or Episode IX. He is just as essential as John Williams and deserves to continue Star Wars's legacy.

hoo boy what a rant
