  • r/travel - Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, Tirana.
  • r/travel - Tirana's walls are home to many beautiful murals.
  • r/travel - The National Museum is an imposing feature at one end of the giant Skanderbeg Square in Tirana.
  • r/travel - Here's General Skanderbeg himself.
  • r/travel - View from the top of the Pyramid of Tirana during a moody sunset.
  • r/travel - Petrelë Castle, about a half-hour drive east of Tirana.
  • r/travel - Just across the border in North Macedonia, the old town of Ohrid is a ridiculously picturesque network of cobbled streets.
  • r/travel - The views across Lake Ohrid are equally stunning.
  • r/travel - Church of St John the Theologian, perhaps Ohrid's most-photographed location (and you can see why).
  • r/travel - 16km around Lake Ohrid, the Bay of Bones is a recreation of a prehistoric settlement that was found here, with gorgeous views out over the lake.
  • r/travel - Further round the lake, right by the border with Albania and just 15km or so from Greece, is the Monastery of St Naum - a functioning monastery which is also home to peacocks.
  • r/travel - Probably the only time I'll photograph a beach with a palm tree and a snow-capped mountain in the same shot.
  • r/travel - A military site featuring hundreds of ramshackle caravans. Note the word 'North' has been scratched off the signage. This country is still very much just 'Macedonia' to many locals
  • r/travel - Skopje is a wonderful, weird, wild place. Here's a pretty street in its ancient Old Town.
  • r/travel - The Stone Bridge connects the Old Town with the modern city centre, across the Vardar river.
  • r/travel - Between 2009 and 2014, the local government invested millions into grand new neoclassical buildings and gaudy statues in an attempt to revitalise the city and boost tourism.
  • r/travel - Protests erupted over plans to renovate this shopping centre in a similar style. Its ugly, late-80s design reminded the locals too fondly of the fall of Communism. So it stayed.
  • r/travel - A murmuration of birds over Skopje's Macedonia Square at dusk. The Millennium Cross in the distance is one of the tallest crosses in the world, at an incredible 66m in height.
  • r/travel - A 40-minute drive away from Skopje lies Matka Canyon, housing the oldest artificial lake in the country.
  • r/travel - A boat ride through the canyon as the sun began to set in the sky is among my favourite memories of this trip.

Advice on Tirana, Albania

My partner and I are going to Tirana for unique holiday in January for 4 days. Would appreciate recommendations on where to go, what to do...we're staying in the centre right by Skanderbeg Square.

-Is it safe? Any no go areas? -Things to see recommendations? We're an active couple so not much off limits! I know about the mountain cable car and hiking up there, and BunkArt, but would appreciate some more niche recommendations. -I've heard the wine is good, can anyone recommend a good wine tasting? -Any restaurants/bars you'd recommend? -Also any local tips please!

Thanks in advance all 🇦🇱

I traveled to Tirana, Albania, and stayed there for 5 days. I was so impressed and my expectations were blown out of the water! I highly recommend this as a viable location for lovers of travel! The people were very friendly, the city is vast and clean. I stayed at an airbnb type housing near the main square (Skanderbeg Square), which cost very little.
