[–]Celticsbugeyes10 128 points129 points  (4 children)

Less stress when you know your bench is the third best team in the conference.

[–]LakersRedDordit 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you better than Gabriel and Lonnie Walker Jr.? 😤

[–][TOR] Jorge GarbajosaAkumetsu33 40 points41 points  (13 children)

Now I'm wondering if it was his own choice or the celtics PR team advised him to tone it down to look more "professional" whatever that means in corporate lingo.

[–]CelticsBlueJays007 94 points95 points  (9 children)

We’ve gone from the mystery of “What did Ime do?” to the mystery of “Why did Mazzulla stop chewing gum?”

I like this one better tbh

[–]Celticsefshoemaker 53 points54 points  (7 children)

Joe’s shenanigans are cheeky and fun.

Ime’s shenanigans were cruel and tragic.

[–]Celtics0DegreesCalvin 25 points26 points  (6 children)

Which makes them not shenanigans, really...

[–]WarriorsPopeJustinXII 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Evil shenanigans.

[–]Bullsorphy 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I swear to god I'll pistol whip the next one of you who says "shenanigans."

[–]CelticsAmishCableGuy 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Hey Favre, what's that restaurant you like? The one with stuff on the walls?

[–]Celticsiritian 7 points8 points  (1 child)

You mean Shenanigans?

[–]Netsthefineart 1572 points1573 points  (94 children)

Hope that P was worth it Ime

[–]SupersonicsOlyBodie 1338 points1339 points  (11 children)

Layoff P

[–]GargolisX 219 points220 points  (7 children)

This is poetic

[–]CelticsAmateurGameMusic 45 points46 points  (5 children)

Yeah, just another thing I'll never get

[–]throwout50 56 points57 points  (2 children)

A few years back, in a locker room press conference during the playoffs, Paul George touted his playoff abilities by asking a reporter, "Y'all ain't met Playoff P yet, huh?"

It became something of a meme to call him “Playoff P,” especially when he didn’t play well in the playoffs.

So the Layoff P joke is a play on that, except it’s about Ime Udoka being laid off (fired) by the Celtics for pursuing some ill-advised P (I don’t need to explain P, do I?).

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I guess Ime need another job

He’s the Celtic’s 7th 1st black head coach in franchise history.

[–]Celticsmsokol416 1345 points1346 points  (22 children)

Waiting for Jay Williams to comment on this one 😂

[–]CelticsAmateurGameMusic 336 points337 points  (1 child)

He cant comment, his account was hacked

[–]Celticskey_lime_pie 94 points95 points  (0 children)

He did not post that & his passcode has now been changed.

[–][deleted] 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Lmao first thing that came to my mind

[–]dont_shoot_jr 113 points114 points  (0 children)

They don’t teach NBA history at Duke

[–]shellsquad 32 points33 points  (15 children)

What has JWill said?

[–]scorelesswilliamson 271 points272 points  (14 children)

The clown tweeted that Udoka was the first black coach of the Celtics and then got promptly buried. Then he claimed he got hacked. The idea someone would hack him just to tweet that out is one of the funniest things ever.

[–]Tearz_in_rain 172 points173 points  (7 children)

I mean... the Celtics had the first Black coach in NBA history in Bil Russell.

And it wasn't like Jay Williams had to think back to long to come up with a Black Celtics coach: Doc Rivers was their coach when they had won their last title.

And K. C. Jones won two titles with them as head coach in the 80s.

[–][BOS] Paul PierceIllmattic 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Lol a simple google search would tell you that there were 5 black Celtics head coaches before ime. Insane he brought that up.

[–]CelticsNoobChumpsky 56 points57 points  (1 child)

A lot of r/nba thinks the NBA only really started after 2014, so he's probably one of those fellas.

[–]shellsquad 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Haha he is ridiculous. I have a hard time watching him. As a Bulls fan I was already biased, but I figured SAS would have had him banned from First Take by now.

[–]es_cl 17 points18 points  (2 children)

[–]shellsquad 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Those are some dumb takes for sure. To be clear, I don't love SAS either for the simple fact that he was a dick to Max when Max was always respectful and had good takes.

[–][BOS] Marcus SmartParsnipPizza 101 points102 points  (3 children)

I always forget about Satch, everyone knows the championship guys like Russell, KC, Doc

[–]Celticsnoposters 58 points59 points  (2 children)

Not everyone, as it turns out

[–][BOS] Marcus SmartParsnipPizza 29 points30 points  (1 child)

I still think Doc regressed/stagnated as a coach, he was legitimately great in Orlando and then Boston. His worst flaws have just exploded since LA (where he was still damn good for 90% of the time)

[–]Clippersshigs21 15 points16 points  (0 children)

the coaching game has just passed him. Newer coaches have adapted and gotten better

[–]WizardsMrMrRogers 279 points280 points  (8 children)

But will he be their fourth first black coach to win the Finals?

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Hiring a black head coach for the seventh time is a once in lifetime experience

[–]CelticsNotFabMelo 891 points892 points  (47 children)

all Ime had to do was keep it in his pants...

happy for Bazooka Joe. he really is the coach that stepped up.

[–]Celticsgilgagorgon 260 points261 points  (1 child)

Idk how I’ve never heard bazooka Joe. That’s perfect.

[–]LakersoOoleveloOo 155 points156 points  (31 children)

Cheated on Nia Long

SMH

[–]Heat302born 211 points212 points  (21 children)

Jay Z cheated on Beyoncé. Can happen to anyone man

[–][BOS] Kevin Garnettory1994 188 points189 points  (19 children)

And Gerard Pique cheated on Shakira. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what you have, the grass always seems greener on the other side.

[–]Pndrizzy 167 points168 points  (14 children)

Knowing absolutely nothing about their situation, even if you have a girl like Beyoncé or Shakira, that doesn’t mean they actually fuck you often, or are into it when they do, or have the same kinks, or that your partner even cares if you do it, etc. After a certain point, sex becomes more of a chore, and both have to work to keep it fresh. But with a new person, it’s new, so it’s always fresh and exciting. Basically, I understand how it could happen, even though I don’t support it without consent from your partner

[–]KnicksDA_ReasoN 37 points38 points  (1 child)

There's a famous quote but I have no idea where it originated. It's used in a Halle Berry movie but I think it goes back even further than that, and it goes:

"Show me a beautiful woman and I'll show you a man who's tired of fucking her."

I feel like that applies in all those cases mentioned above.

[–]Pndrizzy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I thought the quote was "who's tired of her shit"

[–]Heat302born 44 points45 points  (4 children)

And the most important thing people overlook is to us that’s Beyoncé or Shakira. But to Jay and Gerald after awhile they just are the women they are with. They get used to them. Everything gets old and routine no matter how good it seems. So I can definitely see how even the most beautiful people get cheated on. Times get stale and people start wondering. Still shitty of course

[–]CelticsLordHussyPants 14 points15 points  (0 children)

maybe jay-z was slinging bad dick and beyonce decided fuck that, i'm going without

[–]CelticsClassic_Jennings 29 points30 points  (1 child)

Girls are crazy hot in Barcelona

[–]Celtics_Atlas_Drugged_ 21 points22 points  (6 children)

[–]CelticsSleeze_ 72 points73 points  (5 children)

Yeah she’s more mad at us than him

[–]Celticssupes1 42 points43 points  (0 children)

all Ime had to do was keep it in his pants...

Let's be honest we all know there was more to it than that.

[–]drivecartoabar 1526 points1527 points  (68 children)

Well as a casual nba fan call me surprised that Joe Mazzulla is not a white italian guy.

[–]Celticsjrlandry 523 points524 points  (24 children)

[–]BucksBarnhard 180 points181 points  (12 children)

Is this one of those Mike Tirico situations?

[–]Celticsjrlandry 195 points196 points  (9 children)

Idk the full Tirico situation, but Mazzulla's mom is black, dad Italian from Rhode Island. I think Tirico was the other way around?

[–]Celticsbananajunior3000 494 points495 points  (4 children)

Whoa, Mike Tirico's mom is Joe Mazzulla's dad and vice-versa? That's wild

[–][UTA] Adam Keefesoapy_goatherd 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Lmao I want this sitcom

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (3 children)

I think tirico said he’s not black lol

[–]sporkemon 64 points65 points  (2 children)

not only was his dad italian, he was from the second most italian city in the country, home of notable italian luminaries like dj pauly d.

[–]Celticsjrlandry 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A New England Italian coaching the Celtics is a dream

[–]CelticsLMM01 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Damn I had no idea Joe’s pops had passed away. I’m sure he’d be ridiculously proud of how Joe has stepped up and succeeded though

[–]KnicksMyNameIsAMeme 58 points59 points  (5 children)

Still looks incredibly Italian, same thing with Banchero. Italians got some strong and noticeable facial features goddamn.

[–]HeatHadken 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For someone who looks like Waluigi, we can only hope he comes to gain Waluigi levels of confidence.

[–]CelticsA-Dumb-Ass 107 points108 points  (34 children)

We’re now counting Italians as white?

[–]drivecartoabar 116 points117 points  (27 children)

Well, I do. What are they?

[–]CelticsA-Dumb-Ass 159 points160 points  (2 children)

It’s just a joke from snl

[–]Celticslazydictionary 148 points149 points  (21 children)

Back in the day, they weren't considered white.

Whiteness as a concept is completely fucked.

I thought Jason Kidd was white until I saw a picture of him with hair.

[–]Trail Blazersselz202 60 points61 points  (7 children)

I too thought he was white all the way up until he got fired from the... Nets? And everybody flipped out about black coaches getting fired.

[–]Celticslazydictionary 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if my man was anymore light skinned, he'd be albino.

[–]RiverShenismydad 28 points29 points  (5 children)

I'm just learning he isn't white. I feel dumb as hell.

[–]BucksTsudaar 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Is he?

Are we joking or is this real?

[–]TimberwolvesGetThereInOnePiece 33 points34 points  (0 children)

He’s African American

Like Elmer Fudd

[–]CelticsBrady331 954 points955 points  (9 children)

[–]CelticsDazzling-Reason-5140 239 points240 points  (5 children)

Been seeing this on twitter since his first win lmao

[–]Jazzmusicnothing 30 points31 points  (4 children)

I don't get the joke, is this "I'm not the step something, I'm the something that stepped up" a common phrase?

[–]76ersSelthboy 147 points148 points  (1 child)

"I'm not the step-dad, I'm the dad that stepped up"

Is the meme it's based on

[–]HeathBell21 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There's a saying that goes "I'm not the stepdad, I'm the dad that stepped up" in reference to a stepdad taking the role of a deadbeat dad. In this case, Joe is the stepdad, Ime is the deadbeat.

[–]SunsBigusDickus099 1820 points1821 points  (78 children)

Ime Udoka really ruined his entire career by not keeping it in his pants even though he had Nia Long.

Historians will use him as an example.

[–]BucksBarnhard 502 points503 points  (8 children)

His story will be taught in textbooks for centuries to come.

[–]temujin94 93 points94 points  (3 children)

Young Snuggie will teach an advanced bag fumble class on the matter.

[–]Celticsdarthpaul 366 points367 points  (2 children)

not in florida

[–]Cpt_Jumper 58 points59 points  (10 children)

I just watched 'You People' the other day. Nia Long and Lauren London in the same film. My word

[–]MavericksFreshwater-Chestnut 21 points22 points  (6 children)

Does Lauren London act like a normal human being in movies now? I hated when they’d make her ridiculously ditzy in a bunch of stuff back in the day. Like in This Christmas she’s super annoying and she was cast that way in multiple other things. Never was sure why that happened.

[–]Cpt_Jumper 38 points39 points  (0 children)

She was good. Honestly, and this is gonna sound cringe to some, but I was just happy to see her working and looking happy after the whole Nipsey death.

[–]Trail Blazersselz202 16 points17 points  (2 children)

I have not watched it but in the movies sub they all said she was pretty terrible, as in no chemistry. Like going through the motions kind of acting.

[–]CelticPrude 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Ya they speed-run from "we just met and are hitting it off" to "happy long term couple" in the span of a few minutes of footage, and there couldn't be any less chemistry between these two actors in those few minutes. I couldn't suspend disbelief that these two characters were actually into each other. And then the rest of the movie is just more of the same. The kiss at the end is entirely CGI'd because she wouldn't kiss him lmao.

There's a ton of other problems with the movie. There's some really funny stuff too, and some really ham-fisted after-school special lessons going on. Could have been executed MUCH better IMO. There's a lot of cringe like The Office, but not well executed cringe. But I still enjoyed it for the bad but sometimes entertaining movie that it is. I'd say give it a watch. It has a ton of top talent in it and their skills were all under-utilized.

[–]Magicstinx2001 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Had a few good laughs the first 20 or so minutes, but then that movie went to absolute shit.

[–]Tampa Bay RaptorsRottenSmegmaMan 241 points242 points  (36 children)

We had Tony Parker as an example and yet history still repeated itself.

[–][deleted] 199 points200 points  (25 children)

Parker didn’t really have any consequences, though, so I get no one learning from that example.

[–]Tampa Bay RaptorsRottenSmegmaMan 215 points216 points  (22 children)

Thats true. Still cant believe he cheated on prime Eva Longoria.

[–]LakersGuerrillaApe 297 points298 points  (7 children)

If losing Eva Longoria isn't considered a consequence then we need to redefine what consequence means.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I meant from the league, but I get what you mean. Lol

[–][GSW] Zarko CabarkapaIAmNotKevinDurant_35 27 points28 points  (2 children)

The Tampa Bay Rays traded Evan Longoria and made a world series 3 years later

[–]ClippersSuckMyLonzoBalls 38 points39 points  (5 children)

why have filet mignon when you can have hot dogs

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m walking into a trap if I comment just about anything here.

[–]Celticsihatebloopers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cheated on her with someone way worse 🤦‍♂️

[–]DosesMakePoisons 15 points16 points  (0 children)

2K did amend his free agency tendencies to be not loyal when the news came out.

[–][TOR] Amir JohnsonIanicRR 77 points78 points  (7 children)

Parker also never actually had sex with Brent Barry's wife it was only sexting. Still crossing multiple lines but the story has been majorly blown up to what it originally was.

[–]Nuggets2796Matt 68 points69 points  (4 children)

But he was with prime Eva Longoria, he should have been guillotined imo

[–]MavericksBigFatModeraterFupa 6 points7 points  (1 child)

we always want what we can’t have

[–]Spurswafflechub 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had a professor at UT who was the General Counsel for the Spurs - now obviously he has a bias view, but he would tell us horror stories and how Eva was notoriously the most difficult person to deal with around media events/practices, etc. No excuses for disgusting behavior but some extra context

[–]LakersIMissMyZune 38 points39 points  (1 child)

He’ll be hired again in the nba. Just a matter of when. Definitely an idiot though

[–]CelticsD3uceeee 1927 points1928 points  (14 children)

Not the step coach, but the coach that stepped up!! Happy for joe mozarella 🧀🧀🧀

[–]Tampa Bay RaptorsRaptors2017champs 319 points320 points  (3 children)

BAZOOKA JOE

[–]Celticselcapitandemundo 914 points915 points  (61 children)

historic fumble by Udoka. lost not only the right to coach arguably the most stacked roster in the league but also Nia Long

[–][deleted] 425 points426 points  (11 children)

As the wise J. Cole once said, “my only regret was too young for Nia Long”

[–][BOS] Marcus SmartParsnipPizza 147 points148 points  (22 children)

He could've been a hero in Boston, Finals coach, gruff and a hardass(the older fans love that). Now he's gonna be coaching in Turkey

[–]BucksJaybold 185 points186 points  (19 children)

Now he's gonna be coaching in Turkey

Let's be real here, the chances that he gets another NBA gig down the road aren't horrible.

[–][OKC] Andre RobersonTerrible_Matador 166 points167 points  (14 children)

Jason Kidd is coaching the Mavericks right now

[–]Bucks [MIL] Damian LillardVicePope 163 points164 points  (11 children)

I mean all he did was drink and drive, beat his wife, abandon his children, bully players, stir shit up at his previous two stops, and be an all around dick head

[–]BucksChipotleAddiction 36 points37 points  (3 children)

Sounds like he’s a perfect fit for coaching a D1 college team actually

[–]Celticsbugeyes10 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey that's a 1 game suspension in the NFL, don't see why it should keep him from being an NBA coach /s

[–]MavericksBigFatModeraterFupa 9 points10 points  (1 child)

i hate him so much. dude is legit just coasting at this point, no coaching, no adjustments, and he’s already driven CWood out because of his bullshit beef. I’m so over J Bitchh

[–]CavaliersDerrick_Rozay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its my turn to treat her right. Taking her fine ass to Denny’s

[–]junkit33 145 points146 points  (23 children)

Well deserved.

So what's the status on Ime?

[–]Celticsgoldfish_11 147 points148 points  (5 children)

According to at least one local guy, Udoka is no longer part of the organization.

[–]Celticsjwd2213 39 points40 points  (2 children)

karalis is good to, i would take that as being factual

[–]CelticsThreeStringKa-Tet 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Kind of shocking how good Karalis is on a website run by Greg Bedard.

[–]CelticsLeftLane4PassingOnly 146 points147 points  (1 child)

Relationship Status: Complicated.

[–]KingsCudi_buddy 75 points76 points  (3 children)

Pretty sure the Kings have had 19 coaches since 2000. Get those numbers up, Celtics

[–]Celticsthe_moosen 28 points29 points  (1 child)

And they're still paying 17 of them

Boston really needs to step it up

[–]KingsCudi_buddy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Udoka a good start. Need Mazzulla to pick up a DUI to really start the comeback process though.

[–]SpursDevilGunManga 109 points110 points  (4 children)

Reporter: "Joe how do you feel?"

"....."

[–]Celtics693275001 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Joe: chews gum

[–]Celticsefshoemaker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

“With my nerve endings.”

[–][BOS] Kevin GarnettPaleontologistFluid9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Coach Joe Belichick does 2 things - win games and not tell reporters shit

[–][BOS] Marcus SmartParsnipPizza 81 points82 points  (1 child)

Fully deserved. While Ime had a tough love approach and leaned on Hardy and Mazzula for the X's and O's, Joe has been able to be more of a supportive coach (look at that Jaylen conference that appears to have paid off the next game). Also, goodbye Ime. You could've been both a hero in Boston and still married engaged to Nia Long but you've lost both because you're a dumbass

[–]Lakersleavemydollarsalone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Small correction, I think they were only engaged

[–][BOS] Marcus SmartHailKyrie 219 points220 points  (11 children)

Joe really has blown me away he came in such a tough spot and hit the ground running

[–]NBATheOrangeFutbol 54 points55 points  (4 children)

Sat down and actually studied a Celtics game for the first time this year. Those dudes look like a well-coached bunch.

[–]LakersFolk_Legend 34 points35 points  (3 children)

Great players, scheme, and culture. Rare you get all 3 but hate to say the Celtics have it this year.

[–]Heat302born 25 points26 points  (2 children)

More importantly it looks like those guys absolutely love playing for him which imo is the most important part. You’d think they’ve been playing under him for years the way he has that group on a string with one another. Ime being a dickhead was a blessing in disguise

[–]Lakersdirtykirty3 101 points102 points  (5 children)

I mean Luke Walton had the warriors undefeated through December subbing for Steve Kerr their 73-9 year. It’s when assistants take other jobs that’s when you know if they can really coach or not

[–]Celticsefshoemaker 64 points65 points  (2 children)

Well our top assistant from last year is the head coach for utah so…

[–]CelticsTheLeoMessiah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but also Kerr was still with the team and in direct communication with them, slightly different situations imo Ime has basically no connection with the team afaik

[–]NBAwhitemamba83 80 points81 points  (4 children)

I walked past this guy sitting at a table meeting with a couple of players outside of a Sheetz in Fairmont, WV just a couple of years ago. Still crazy to see him already as an NBA head coach, especially for the Celtics. Love to see it.

[–]Celticsefshoemaker 99 points100 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite Joe Mazzula stories is that when Brad Stevens offered him the assistant job he almost turned it down because he didn’t want to quit on his college players, and all his players were like “coach are you fucking stupid take the nba job”

[–]Username524 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tell this to my wife, she has just recently gotten into WVU BBall, and I’ve been keeping her updated on his progress in the NBA especially since this interim status became news. It’s mind blowing that just a few years ago he was the HC of a D-II college, and NOW he’s the HC of the Boston Celtics…just insane.

[–]TimberwolvesSharcbait 62 points63 points  (7 children)

Boston sports reporters in shambles. They get to take answers from Billy B and Joe "because I didn't want to" Mazzulla.

[–]Celticsbugeyes10 38 points39 points  (3 children)

Joe, who’s from Rhode Island, was 12 when BB became coach of the Pats. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s modeled all his media interactions after Bill.

[–]Araychwhyteeaychem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My dad's basketball coach in highschool was Joe's grandfather. Said he was very similar, a true stoic. But I wouldn't be surprised if Bill is a huge role model, not many others in sports when you're from Johnston.

[–]PacersRollBlobRoll 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It’s long overdue that the Celtics hired a black head coach.

EDIT: my account was hacked.

[–]CelticsSleeze_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Team has a great record and is playing well, but imo the most important thing is the vibes on the team are purely immaculate right now. Most fun Cs team I can remember in a long time. Maz clearly helping foster a pretty awesome culture.

[–]Celticssenorjc 73 points74 points  (11 children)

COTY has to be between him and Mike Brown at this point, no?

[–]RaptorsBoomhauer_007 113 points114 points  (4 children)

The person that turned around the team with no expectations is always going to win it over somebody that has a good roster from the start, just always how the award works

[–]Celticsgagakaba 67 points68 points  (1 child)

This is why I'm still salty about Brad losing over Casey. 😅

[–]Bullsthisguy012 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Kings still 3rd? Mike Brown easily still

[–]kelsey11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Should have kept the"Interim". He was a shoo-in for IHCOTY.

[–][BOS] Marcus SmartParsnipPizza 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't be mad if Mike won it but in my brain Joe has to be top 3 at worst

[–]ThunderBBallHunter 50 points51 points  (3 children)

We have had coaches last a while even when they suck

From like the mid 50s until the early 90s they were basically always contending with few years between contender teams.

Doc and Brad combined had over 1000 games, and 18 seasons. Maybe they won only 1 championship but that is remarkable stability and competence at head coach

Celtics have switched coaches 3 times in 3 years and have still been the best team in the East over that span.

At some point you have to assume that maybe Udoka isn't actually that good.

By that logic, perhaps Brad and Joe aren't good coaches either.

It really is a players league. The coach can just give you a little extra here and there.

History being made with the Celtics hiring their first black coach in back to back years

The decision to permanently promote Mazzulla is hardly surprising. He has guided the Celtics to the best record in the NBA (42-17), gained the trust of his players, and put the team in position to win its first championship since 2008. And league sources stressed in recent months that Udoka’s time with the team was over, despite the fact that he had been suspended rather than fired. Still, there was a belief that, primarily for legal reasons, this move would not become official until Udoka’s suspension ended June 30.

Bruh what’s the globe doing on Reddit

Honestly one of the craziest rises in the coaching ranks in history. 2 years head coach at a small D-II school and 3 years later he’s the head coach of the top team in the NBA

Congratulations to the first black coach in Celtics history! What a historic moment!
