How many times can they fire this guy?

[–]AckbarCaviar 700 points701 points  (147 children)

I can’t believe he announced his return without a contract.

They used him to juice Black Adam and they had no intention of bringing Henry back.

Edit: they = The Rock and His Agent.

[–]etherspin 298 points299 points  (30 children)

And his updated look at the end of Black Adam seemed promising for a brighter direction.

Cavill out seems to upend everything - why would there be Gadot, Jason Momoa, Affleck/Keaton

All I could see happening is ripples from Ezra being portrayed as changing these things up

[–]BlessTheKneesPart2[🍰] 102 points103 points  (14 children)

Flash fractured the timeline :(

[–]kowhunga 71 points72 points  (10 children)

Barry need to keep his dick out of the timeline.

[–]shawshankya 29 points30 points  (2 children)

Ezra Miller f’d it up for all of us!!

[–]kowhunga 26 points27 points  (0 children)

walks into a room of people who have never met me

Gentlemen, we've been Flashpointed

[–]Alarmed-Direction500 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I bet they re re re re RE edit flash point to officially clean the slate.

[–]cosmoboy 78 points79 points  (1 child)

'They' weren't yet running DC when Black Adam released...

[–]Benedict-Awesome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love how people just say shit

[–]DawnOnTheEdge 58 points59 points  (7 children)

It sounds to me like Dwayne Johnson wanted to do right by him and did his best to make it work out, but it didn’t.

[–]Admonitio 10 points11 points  (3 children)

This, people acting like he had way more influence than he probably did. I highly doubt he would have known that WB was going to reboot Superman.

[–]revel911 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think he had influence until the numbers didn’t make what they wanted.

[–]Mountain-Flamingo163 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Cavill's IG post specifically says the studio had him announce his return as Superman. Only to find out today that he wasn't going to get that role.

[–]AckbarCaviar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cavil and Rock have the same agent. The rock and his agent fought the studio to get the Cavil cameo.

[–]muqe29 38 points39 points  (12 children)

I have been trying to tell people about the fact that he doesn't have a contract and it's just black Adam promotion but people for no reason have too much hope

[–]UrdnotChivay 53 points54 points  (6 children)

Are you telling me that fans of DC's symbol of hope are very hopeful people?

[–]ClassicT4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Then they (The Rock) spoiled it before the movie even came out.

[–]SpiritedWisdom 11 points12 points  (8 children)

I think they would've brought him back and things would've loosely rebooted had BA not been a train wreck financially.

[–]FloppyShellTaco 22 points23 points  (43 children)

Dude quit his job (The Witcher) too. Ouch.

[–]Future-Turtle 41 points42 points  (26 children)

Eh, it was pretty clear Cavill was not happy with the direction of the show and the disregard for the source material. Being promised more Superman gigs probably helped his decision, but it’s entirely likely he’s have made the same call without the DC promises.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (4 children)

Good gravy, Cavill got screwed over

[–]SOSovereign 5 points6 points  (1 child)

When you put in your two weeks and the new job rescinds the offer

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

twice

really he only got brought back because of the rock, not surprising considering that movie failed

[–]TheDawnTrilogy 143 points144 points  (8 children)

they fired him just to bring him back and fire him again. jesus, thank you very much…

[–]00000Shina0000 42 points43 points  (6 children)

And fans aren't angry they're just sad........

Edit: some are very angry and its understandable (Sorry for not counting y'all)

[–]obscuredreference 35 points36 points  (2 children)

I’m both. This is such a bizarre situation. They told him to announce his return, then flaked out on him such a short while later. Utterly unprofessional.

[–]under_lord 307 points308 points  (74 children)

All this does is open our boy for Bond

[–]specifichero101 4 points5 points  (2 children)

They don’t cast big name actors to play bond. Especially one that’s known for being super man. Won’t happen.

[–]hotrod2k82 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Nah I rather he play Archer. He's got the comedic chops and he can more than makeup for not having the voice.

[–]MattTheSmithers 564 points565 points  (95 children)

That’s a bummer. I get why Gunn and Safran want a clean slate (and as creatives they deserve it, they should not be saddled with Zack Snyder’s baggage if they choose not to be). But I feel for Cavill. This character was clearly important to him and it’s just a damn shame that he never got a script that was worthy of what he brought to the table. He joins Brandon Routh as a Superman who could’ve been great if his writers and director did not fail him. Hopefully, whoever Gunn and Safran’s guy is, gets a better deal.

Still…what a shitty break for Cavill. Dude walked from The Witcher for this.

[–]Blargers81 252 points253 points  (30 children)

It’s a shit deal but he left the Witcher for other reasons and it sounds like he still would’ve anyway. This sucks so much but I get it - new era new everything. But man… I wanted just ONE movie with Henry with a director and writer who actually knows Superman. He could’ve been the greatest since Christopher Reeve with a RDJ-like tenure. Sigh.

[–]AgentChris101 72 points73 points  (27 children)

iirc he was on The Witcher under a contract that if they strayed too far from the source material he'd leave. And they did.

[–]butterscotcheggs 13 points14 points  (6 children)

We are still looking for a new James Bond, right?

Honestly I’d watch anything with him in it.

[–]Poseidon-2014 68 points69 points  (9 children)

He left the Witcher over creative differences.

[–][deleted] 44 points45 points  (26 children)

Didn’t people speculate that he wanted a reason to get out of The Witcher because he was feeling unsupported there. He could play James Bond the ultimate franchise hero.

[–]StarkMaximum 29 points30 points  (6 children)

I don't even think it's speculation. Cavill only joined the Witcher because he was a fan and wanted to make sure they were being as true to the series as possible. Once they started to change stuff and wouldn't bend from their stance, he walked.

[–]I_Fart_Dicks 12 points13 points  (11 children)

I like to day dream about a Christopher Nolan Dricted James Bond with Henry Cavill as 007 and Hans Zimmer doing the score.

[–]Synectics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, thanks for adding one more thing to my vision board that will never happen.

[–]Star_Z 5 points6 points  (2 children)

If someone only watched superman or witcher you would scoff at Cavill being named 007. But The Man from U.N.C.L.E shows how great he would be at the part.

[–]Imaginary-Fun-80085 368 points369 points  (71 children)

Goddamn lost Geralt and Clark all in the same year. Jesus.

[–]Redgomotor 153 points154 points  (45 children)

Ok someone call Faige and start an Hyperion movie. That’s the closest thing we can get to see him being Superman again

[–]rdp3186 56 points57 points  (10 children)

Nah fuck it, Cavil as Doctor Doom

[–]TheJeter 26 points27 points  (4 children)

I think he'd kill it as Doom tbh

[–]Throwaway021614 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Victor was portrayed as charismatic, handsome, and athletic before his fall. And arguably after as well. No reason to not lean into that and bring in Henry!

[–]Crimkam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cavill as Luthor, he’s got a good reason to hate the new Superman

[–]singleguy79 71 points72 points  (11 children)

Or a Captain Britain movie

[–]Redgomotor 40 points41 points  (3 children)

That works too considering that the Captain Britain corps travel the multiverse. Could go well with the Secret Wars

[–]Windows_66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They actually do play a role in the buildup to Secret Wars.

They're monitoring the incursions as they're happening, but they eventually all get massacred by the Beyonders. Brian's the only one left, and he loses an eye in the process.

[–]free_will_is_arson 19 points20 points  (2 children)

honestly, now that he's free from both major productions, he could do another Man from U.N.C.L.E. as a bit of a palate cleanser. no great sagas, no deep lore, just a nice breezy fun time being a slick motherfucker.

[–]runnerofshadows 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Have to recast or get a new character to replace Armie Hammer.

[–]Bing_Bong_the_Archer 32 points33 points  (4 children)

Cast him as the new Batman and blow everyone’s fucking minds

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I would be so fucking down. Holy shit. Don’t really know what else I could add but he’d be awesome as a JL Batman.

[–]Bing_Bong_the_Archer 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Honestly, though, he WOULD make an amazing Bruce Wayne

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sentry movie. But he doesn't play sentry, he plays void...

[–]No-Salary-5700 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I'm optimistic that we'll see him in another awesome role!

[–]Brave-Standard6192 169 points170 points  (12 children)

Brutal

[–]MattTheSmithers 83 points84 points  (11 children)

I really hope Cavill got some sort of pay or play deal before he walked away from The Witcher. It would suck if he thought it was a done deal, quit his job, and then gets shafted.

[–][deleted] 77 points78 points  (3 children)

He did not leave the witcher for superman. He would have left anyway.

[–]Bing_Bong_the_Archer 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Just like general audiences, yes

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sucks that one of my favorite shows is just over now because the writers couldn’t get their heads out of their asses and stick closer to the source material that everyone loves

[–]Sensitive_ManChild 16 points17 points  (3 children)

No chance he left the witcher for this. Whatever they told him about superman there was no chance anything would film for another year. if he wanted to do witcher he could have

[–]TheRookCard 136 points137 points  (26 children)

I’m so pissed off about this. It’s so frustrating to be a Superman and DC fan. They continually destroy everything they get halfway right.

His casting was one of the few things they got exactly right. Gal Gadot will be close behind.

[–]DE4N0123 24 points25 points  (9 children)

Yup I wasn’t the biggest fan of WW84 but she’s always been well cast and it would have been nice if just one of this era’s Justice League crew got a properly cohesive trilogy. What a bloody mess. Wonder what’s happening with The Flash movie.

[–]Food_Library333 129 points130 points  (4 children)

Way to jerk this guy around. Still a class act though, that's why he was a great choice for the role.

[–]Future-Turtle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had my problems with his version of Superman, but this is a pretty raw deal. To get one movie, co-star in one of the most divisive films in CBM history sinking your momentum, deal with the JL drama, be kept in limbo for 5+ years, get a promise that you’ll be moving forward as the character and finally getting a proper sequel, and then to get that deal completely yanked is rough.

I don’t blame Gunn/Safran for this, they were brought in to make a new start and that’s what they’re doing. I blame the past 10 years of epic mismanagement that led to the DCEU being such a messy and unsuitable launch pad for this new direction.

WB should never have been making promises like this knowing Gunn/Safran were coming In immediately with carte blanche.

[–]Jklmw2008 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Exactly. His attitude is so indicative of why he was a good fit for Superman.

[–]SpeedDemonJi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If only he got an actual chance to get a new movie with actual decent material

[–]borusato 87 points88 points  (7 children)

Man that is disappointing. His last appearance as Superman will be a post credits scene.

[–]jBlairTech 53 points54 points  (1 child)

At least his face was actually clean-shaven, and not CGI-shaven.

[–]itsahalochannel 217 points218 points  (36 children)

Absolutely devastating, what else is there to say

[–]infinityeagle 114 points115 points  (20 children)

I've never felt so bad for an actor. He seems like a good dude who really loved the character. He's been put through the ringer since landing the role.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (4 children)

This is my main sentiment. Dude seems so passionate and I like him as an actor, and he loses two roles that mean a lot to him in the year. I totally understand the decision, it’s just tough to imagine what he’s feeling.

[–]infinityeagle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And he's being completely selfless through it all...kind of like Superman would.

[–]YellowBubble2710 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The scene in justice league where superman is fighting other heroes - he is so scary aF!

You realise the real might of Kal-El and how much of Clark makes him the Superman that he is 😭😭

I just can’t!!

[–]Table_Coaster 17 points18 points  (6 children)

especially after leaving the Witcher, another project he was so incredibly passionate about

[–]infinityeagle 20 points21 points  (5 children)

Yeah, and he left that project because they weren't staying true to the source material. He loves the characters he plays.

[–]Spynner987 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Didn't the screenwriters hate the books?

[–]-InconspicuousMoose- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't remember where I heard it but there were rumors that Cavill observed screenwriters laughing at the source material (or at Cavill's suggestions based on how intimately he knew the books). So yeah, basically they made a show about books that they hate (or possibly never even fully read!) and hired the guy who loves the books more than anyone else to play the lead role, then they wouldn't let him tell the real stories.

[–]marcspector2022 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the Superman curse.

[–]BringBackRoundhouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very classy response

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (9 children)

I have no clue what they are even planning at this point.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (4 children)

I think this makes it more likely that they’re just wiping the slate clean and starting anew. The focus on a new Superman film as mentioned by Zaslav and Gunn means they know who their moneymakers are. As a result, I’d guess they’ll do a Superman origin, then involve the rest of the trinity, and slowly expand outward getting more obscure like Marvel did.

Though I am torn up at this news, I am also excited to see the new DCU. Starting again with strong creatives at the helm as architects, we could see some amazing movies. If they’re building up the JL, I really hope we get a Martian Manhunter movie.

[–]TheMightyHornet 71 points72 points  (8 children)

Henry Cavill the man has long come off as more Superman than the character he played in MoS and subsequent DCU films. That’s so unfortunate that he appears to have got it, and the folks responsible for writing, producing, and directing those stories got it so, so fucking wrong. There were many issues with the Snyderverse. Some things were done pretty well (Batfleck, Aquaman, the first WW film). But I maintain that the fatal flaw is, he didn’t understand Superman and the Kents. So much could have been forgiven, or papered over, but if you can’t get Superman right, the whole thing will fail.

[–]SuddenOutset 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well. Maybe if they do multiverse stuff they’ll have him there as Superman from a Mather earth 😔

[–]LimePeel96 96 points97 points  (14 children)

Why am i so sad right now

[–]MarshallBanana_ 68 points69 points  (12 children)

Because Cavill was a good Superman and the circumstances that justifiably led to this were not his fault

[–]Cappin_Crunch 23 points24 points  (10 children)

I agree. Unfortunately, I think they realize that Zack Snyder's hands were all over these characters and they can't undo that, so they need to reboot. Which is fair. Most fans probably wouldn't be able to take them seriously after Batman vs Superman

[–]Johnny_Stooge 15 points16 points  (4 children)

It's not even just that. Cavill is almost 40. Gunn wants to tell the story of the start of his DCU and that doesn't work with Cavill at this point. I'd imagine they want Clark to be around 25-ish.

Next year it'll be 10 years since Man of Steel premiered. It's a shame that Cavill never really got much of a go but it's not Gunn's fault here.

[–]metalgeargreed 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Wasn't the flash movie suppose to be Flashpoint? They literally had built in reason to reboot the franchise but keep some of the same actors.

[–]Cappin_Crunch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think they're in a weird spot where they have 3 films ready made (Aquaman 2, Shazam 2, and Flashpoint) so they are sorta forced to release those and can't fully reboot yet. Flashpoint would've been the perfect time to.

[–]burywmore 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I wish he had gotten a chance with a good Superman movie, but he did end up being Superman for three films, which is the second most all time.

[–]LawyerCowboy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Heartbroken

[–]mangelvil 37 points38 points  (4 children)

So, No Superman and No Witcher anymore?

[–]ShaneBroh 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Guy got shafted was perfect in both roles imo

[–]External-Rope6322 76 points77 points  (26 children)

Dang, he could've been great if done right. However I will reserve my judgments on this decision until we see who the new superman is

[–]jBlairTech 57 points58 points  (22 children)

Come on, now. You know whoever it is, he’ll be unfairly compared to Cavill. The new guy doesn’t stand a chance.

[–]Poseidon-2014 17 points18 points  (4 children)

It’s not exactly unfair, the only thing preventing cavill from returning to Superman is the choice to cast actor, it’s not exactly like he can’t play the role.

[–]itsvoogle 54 points55 points  (11 children)

All i wanted after MoS was a nice well done trilogy with Superman and Superman only Villains telling superman only stories. Instead i got dicked around they had to shove Batman down my throat, the whole shitty Justice League Universe with it all while my Boy Superman gets some of the shittiest character development known to mankind. Not only did they not give Superman his own, and well deserved trilogy, or even a sequel, they butchered the whole DCU as well to the point it needs to be rebooted.

Thanks, Bravo, Fantastic /s

[–]BorisBC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Marvel has a fucking MCU, why don't we??? They made a billion dollars off of a comic no one has heard of (Guardians) while WE have Batman AND Superman! FFS someone get Synder in here and get him churning out some damn movies!!!"

  • unnamed WB exec.

[–]probablytrippy 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Right so yeah this is pretty shitty. While following the sub I allowed myself to dream of cavil playing my perfect Superman. Ah well.

[–]Bluebird0040 13 points14 points  (1 child)

This has to be confirmation that a hard reboot is incoming.

Expect them to withhold the announcement until after Aquaman 2, but it’s pretty obvious. If WW3 is getting canceled simultaneously with Cavill’s resurrection being aborted, then Gunn has decided to wipe the slate clean.

[–]bliffer 46 points47 points  (20 children)

Man, I'm 48 and I've been a Superman fan forever but I'm so tired of reboots. Give us anything but origin stories and Superman finding himself stories. Move on to some stories of him being actual goddamn Superman.

[–]KazuyaProta 15 points16 points  (2 children)

WB literally ruined all chances in my lifetime except except Returns

Returns sequel? Canceled

MOS 2? Forcibly turned into BvS.

Solo MOS 2? Constantly toyed, canceled and uncanceled.

Heck, it happened even with DCAMU Superman. Superboy and Steel get introduced? Next movie kills the verse to do a reboot

[–]CertainDerision_33 12 points13 points  (15 children)

If it makes you feel any better, Gunn's Twitter thread confirms that this new Superman movie is NOT an origin story. I assume they're taking notes from Spider-Man: Homecoming & understand that they can throw the audience in head-first and trust them to understand the basic points of the character's backstory through cultural osmosis.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went to take a nap with everything being fine, and then I wake up to this. Very disappointing news. I loved him as Superman.

I hope they're just doing a hard reset to the DCEU, to the point where it's something brand new. They might as well just start from scratch.

[–]sunlifromohio 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Cavill is more wholesome than he is handsome, which I would have assumed to be impossible.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Wonder if he’s gonna go back to marvel and do whatever role they had for him, now that he won’t be doing Superman anymore

[–]Lobsterpyramid 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Just like Welling never got his cape, Cavill never got a decent script….

Maybe this role really is cursed.

[–]Ok_Writing251 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ThankYouHenry

[–]airjordani3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sad Henry’s chance at Superman got wasted on Snyder’s bs after MoS. This decision makes sense, even though it hurts a lot. Hope the next actor portrays Superman with just as much respect and grace Henry did.

[–]MagisterPraeceptorum 29 points30 points  (3 children)

I think this pretty much confirms a hard reboot. Sorry for Cavill, but it’s what’s best for the future of DC.

[–]Inside_Letterhead_32 21 points22 points  (3 children)

I was really excited for his return as Superman in future dc projects especially man of steel 2

[–]LegoRob1n 47 points48 points  (6 children)

We deserved a Man of Steel 2 😭😭😭

[–]Superman246o1 22 points23 points  (4 children)

So did Henry.

At least he has some free time to play Creegan Stark now.

[–]suprmniii 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm sad

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

So, they only brought him back to hype up Black Adam, which made less money than WB intended?

DC needs its own studio. Now.

I hope our boy finds more great work ahead of him. WB did him dirty. :(

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I sorta get it but why blue ball everyone WB?

[–]Andynonomous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That they never gave him a proper sequel to Man of Steel is a crime for which I will never forgive WB.

[–]fireflyry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sad news as he was a great Superman but could have been greater with better writing and direction.

[–]thatguy2349 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Pain, just pain. Henry deserves better. Superman deserves better. Finding an actor that fits Clark Kent, and is as devoted to the character as Henry, will be tough.

[–]clarkdorkclork 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Regardless of my excitement that the character can finally be freed from any shackles remaining from the Snyder-era, I feel absolutely horrible for Cavill. To love a character so much and finally get the chance to play them again after a decade, only to be denied the role a month later must be devastating.

[–]OrdinaryExpert6518 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Here’s my question.. have they said ANYTHING about Ezra miller? That should’ve been the first decision to be made.

[–]noakai 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Why would they need to say anything? Everyone knows that Miller is done. He had one movie left and it was Flash, it will come out and do what it does but they're rebooting the universe and there's no reason to bring him along. They don't need to make an announcement that he's gone when they never said he was doing anything post-Flashpoint anyway. That decision was likely made months ago.

[–]wokuspokus69 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of good and nice actors out there, but there aren’t any other ones like cavil who have consistently and publicly stood up for the fans and source material against the darkness of Hollywood wheeling and dealing. Very sad about this.

[–]TheYellowFringe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If DC is ever going to have its films taken seriously, everything needs to be reconned. Nothing can remain from the DCEU... no Justice League...no Suicide Squad...no Black Adam. Nothing.

Henry Cavill can go to Marvel Studios and portray Captain Britain now. Rumours have it that he's going to.

[–]Awest66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Poor guy.

He had it in him to play a great Superman, never got the chance to shine like he could have and just when things were looking up, he had the rug pulled right out from under him.

Get it together, WB.

[–]Sensitive_ManChild 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Lol

Gunn comes to DC. Cavill is out forever. That’s it folks it’s done.

But for some reason the long in development JJ “Superman” movie gets to stay? what a bunch of crap.

They better hope people like this new Superman actor, because if they don’t DC will have broken the character in the movies for another ten years.

[–]Shatterhand1701 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I have to give Henry Cavill serious props for handling all of this with maturity, style and class, because if I were in his place, I'd be royally pissed off.

Seriously; the man just can't catch a break. First he barely gets to make the role of Superman his own before things fall apart with the DCEU, but things turn around for a time when he scores the role of Geralt in the Witcher. Then, he parts ways with the Witcher due to [fill in whatever rumored reason you're buying into here], which is rough for fans of his portrayal of Geralt, but things start to look up when he learns he's gotten the nod to return as Superman. Then, James Gunn steps in to put out the DCEU dumpster fire, and hands Henry his walking papers. Now he's out as Geralt AND Superman. What's left for him? Enola Holmes 3? Another opportunity to play second-fiddle to Millie Bobby Brown? (Not throwing shade at Millie, by the way.)

I thought Henry could've made a damn good Superman, right up there with the likes of Christopher Reeve (who will always be "my Superman" since I grew up with his films). I say "could've" because I don't feel he ever really got that opportunity. His performance in Man of Steel was overshadowed by how divisive the film was. Before he could really own the role with another film that didn't have to spend most of its time on yet another rehashing of Kal-El's origin story, his Superman was pitted against Ben Affleck's Batman because the DCEU crew was desperate to catch up to the MCU and they, apparently, couldn't wait to not only do Batman vs. Superman, but also shoehorn in the Doomsday/Death of Superman story. Once he was brought back for (either version of) Justice League, there wasn't enough for him to do. DC Studios squandered a worthy successor to Christopher Reeve's Superman; it's a goddamn crime towards Henry and the character.

I know Superman fans - and especially the Snyderverse zealots - will be quick to dogpile on James Gunn, but I'm not going to do that. I don't agree with his decision about this, mind you, but Gunn's just trying to pick up the pieces over there. The man was handed a big, steaming, smelly pile of shit and told to turn it back into gold, and I can see why he just wants to wipe the slate as clean as he can. There's so much ill will, dashed hopes, and controversy left in the DCEU's wake, and Henry's continued presence would've prevented all of it from being cleansed. He would've done his very best, because that's the kind of talented man he is, but once again, he would've been overshadowed by the ghosts of the DCEU's failure.

Again, I'm not saying it couldn't have been done. I think that if Gunn kept Cavill on and given him a Superman film free of the baggage of his previous entries in the role (basically, de-canonizing MoS, BvS and (ZS)JL), Cavill could've finally had the chance to embrace the role and make it his. With the right script, people would've been willing to forgive and forget the chaotic mess of the DCEU. Gunn and his crew could've done it. They simply chose not to, and whether we like it or not - and I don't - that's Gunn's prerogative.

I can only hope James Gunn will make better choices going forward and, somehow, against all odds, turn the DC cinematic universe into something entertaining and relevant again. It's just a shame that it's coming at the expense of Henry's tragically limited time as Superman.

The internet is going to go to war over this.

Aw, that kinda sucks. Definitely deserves the chance to actually play Superman. Though, if they’re getting rid of Cavill that means they’re probably rebooting. If they were continuing with the DCEU, they definitely wouldn’t want to get rid of Cavill.

Class Act

I both totally understand the decision and feel wrecked for the guy. Really like what we know of Cavill as a person, fan, and actor, and I only wish he had gotten the chance to really do justice to the character and had been given a good director to helm his films initially.

I hope he has more success after this; it’s hard to see him lose out on Superman and the Witcher. He had short lived runs on two characters he liked but the director and showrunner didn’t respect their respective characters.

With all that said, I do believe the smartest decision for the DCEU is to wipe the slate and really begin anew, as difficult as it will be. This way, there truly is a rebirth. This makes me think, if they’re willing to wipe Cavill’s Superman off the map, that Momoa is also likely to go or be recast. Same for Gadot.

This is seriously heartbreaking. "My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined."

WB has completely squandered every opportunity to do the character justice with an actor who committed unprecedented dedication to filling the suit and doing the character justice. Fail on fail on fail with many different people to blame. Everyone who touched the property fails to do justice to the character on an almost criminal level.

So they got him to drop The Witcher so they can drop him as superman? Dick move.

So is everything getting a full reboot now, except for Peacemaker?
