Little Feat on a WMMR-FM broadcast.  In the artwork folder we've got the original ad clipped out of the newspaper by Sam, plus ads I found on Newspapers.com.

Little Feat had been defunct since leader Lowell George's death from a heart attack in 1979. In 1987 the group reformed, adding Craig Fuller (formerly of Pure Prairie League) as lead singer.  The reformed group was successful immediately; the first single "Hate To Lose Your Lovin' was a #1 hit on the Mainstream Rock charts, with follow-up singles "Let It Roll" placing at #3, "Long Time Till I Get Over You" #19, and "One Clear Moment" at #10.

Four U.S. chart hits from one album is a smash hit, and this show takes place right in the middle of that chart run.

Our pal Sam Elliot's Mustache has a cache of shows on CD-R that he digitized several years ago.  The files were chaptered, but the commercials were grouped together instead of individually chaptered. The files weren't declicked, and he didn't scan the disc labels.

He's sent me a stack of these CD-Rs, and I'm going to re-chapter them, and clean up the clicks n' pops, and they'll be appearing here every few weeks.

As Sam's from Philadelphia, and we had a great response from our recent run of shows with Philadelphia bands, I'm leading off with a Berlin/Robert Hazard show.

So..you get flac files of wavs and the cue sheet.

I found a review of the Hazard concert.  I couldn't find anything about the Berlin show.
I did find an ad for Terri Nunn's third-billed role in "Georgia Peaches," one of those flicks released in the wake of Smokey & the the Bandit. Nunn was paired with "singing star Tanya Tucker" as the Peach Sisters, "mixed up with moonshine and money."  The movie was a pilot for a possible television series.  Had it been more successful, we might not have had this Berlin show.

On the Berlin show, "Touch & Go" is unreleased.

On the Hazard show, "Escalator of Life," "Out of the Blue," and "Change Reaction" are from his self-released 1982 EP. "Say Yo" was the b-side to "Escalator of Life" (RCA PB-3449).  "Hard Hearted" was on his RCA LP, Wing of Fire. "Dance A Tron" appears to be unreleased.

ELP tracks from this concert were also used on a Retro Rock show.  I don't know if they're the same tracks as this show.

The ELP concert was officially issued in 2010 by Shout Factory as Live at Nassau Coliseum '78.  It doesn't look like it's currently in print (Amazon has it new for $98.00), but copies are easily available used. So if you like this, go track down the entire concert in better sound quality on the CD.

The Quarterflash set from the Quarterflash/Yes Supergroups A Night On The Road was also recorded at the Bakersfield Civic Auditorium, March 31, 1982.  They were the opening act for Mr. Hagar, so if you combine the two shows, it's JUST LIKE BEING IN BAKERSFIELD IN 1982!!

I've included a Newsday review of the ELP concert, and I found an ad in Billboard for the show.

This show is, once again, from the archives of our pal, Sam Elliot's Mustache.  He ships me the records, and I do my best to digitize 'em and present 'em to the Voodoo Wagon audience, which is the BEST AUDIENCE in the blogosphere.

I found a trade ad for the broadcast, and another newspaper ad.  There's a lot of clippings in the Artwork file for you to peruse and ponder. I normally trim the entertainment listings down from full page, but this one had an interesting interview with Lou Reed, so I left it as-is.

This show has a "Sneak Preview" ad by Chaka Khan.  I've included an article on the advertising concept; the idea was to partner with an artist to provide advance promotion on an upcoming single. A short bit of the record is combined with a Coke jingle in the style of the upcoming single.  It's similar to what Budweiser was doing, but the artist got about sixty second of airtime for their actual upcoming record before shilling for the sugar water.

I was not able to figure out the source of the Atlanta Rhythm Section tracks, other than they were recorded in Japan.  If you have any information, please leave a comment below.

On Friday, November 10, 1967 The Jimi Hendrix Experience, consisting of Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, played live in the Vitus Studio in Bussum, The Netherlands.
The recordings were to be broadcasted in the TV show "Hoepla", by VPRO Television.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience were in the Netherlands to perform on the " Hippy Happy Beurs"in the Ahoy Hallen in Rotterdam, later that evening.

On the festival they shared the stage with Dutch bands The Flower and The Motions.

Other bands to perform on the festival which was held from Friday the 10th till Tuesday the 14th were :

The Spencer Davis Goup, The Soft Machine, The Pink Foyd, The Golden Earrings, The Buffoons, Keith West and Tomorrow, Q65, Group 1850, Armand, Daddy' s Act, The Shoes, Geno Washington and his Ram Jam Band, Rob Hoeke, Cuby + The Blizzards,
The Bee Gees were to perform on the second day but they couldn' t come and were to be replaced by the Kinks, who couldn't make it either and in the end The Spencer Davis Group replaced the Bee Gees.

The band arrived in the studio around 11 o'clock AM. Afer The Experience played their set the band changed their sets of clothes and played Purle Haze again, so VPRO could use that for another screening of "Hoepla".

Unfortunately that never occurred. Here you can hear those versions.

Quarterflash played three unreleased songs.
The Bakersfield newspaper was not available.  The newspaper ad and review in the Artwork file are from the show in Fresno.  Hagar and Quarterflash played Fresno's Selland Arena Thursday March 25, 1982. Fresno is about 110 miles north of Bakersfield.  While they're not from the same show, the ad and review are probably similar to those that appeared in Bakersfield.

This show has also been "gray-marketed" as "Cape Cod 1981" subtitled "The New England Broadcast."  From the sound samples on Amazon UK, I'm sure it's also sourced from the A Night On The Road LPs.

I originally did this one a few years back and posted it here at VW. At the time, I was deleting the reference tones.  I know, you're heartbroken.  Don't worry, I'll take another pass at this one some day, and then I'll also scan the missing disc labels.

This is the same digitization as before, but with file tagging that matches the other four A Night On The Road shows. Yes, there are three more of these I'll be posting soon.

Recorded 11/21-22/80 The Palladium, N. Y. during the Audio-Visions tour.

As part of my research on the show, I found an article about the singer on four out of the seven Coke ads. Her name is Martee Lebous, and she had one LP come out in 1976 on Image Records, "The Lady Wants To Be A Star."

That article mentioned this show was broadcast on more than 280 stations, which gives us a rough estimate of how many copies this were pressed up.

I also found a newspaper print ad for the concert.  Ads in trade publications such as Billboard turn up occasionally, as do ads from music magazines, but I have never seen a newspaper print ad for a syndicated concert.

There's also a good newspaper article, which is unfortunately missing the second page on Newspapers.com

I've included scans of the disc labels and cue sheets.

https://mega.nz/file/2YIzWTZI#oZHjlDbtHcrvQFVvLVxn2q3NAjVcNTWTOfvsJ7ZnggU

I want these digitizations to duplicate as closely as possible the original syndicated radio discs.  Each side starts with a reference tone, and most of us don't want to listen to it. I've numbered the tones as "OO" so that you can drop them without having to renumber all of the following tracks.

ANOTR began in April 1981 and ran monthly though September, with additional shows on holiday weekends.  The show was producted by GK Productions for the ABC Radio Network. Patrick Griffith is the “G” in GK Productions; the K is Kevin Kalunian.  Patrick Griffith and Kevin Kalunian produced Backstage Live in 1977, Captured Live! In 1983 and produced shows for CBS Radio's "On Stage Tonight" series, the ABC Radio Networks SuperGroups and "A Night On The Road" series.

The host is our old pal, Pat St. John. You remember him from SuperGroups In Concert and Live From Electric Ladyland.

The show numbering is 1, 2, 3…plus the year (’81, or ’82).

There were seven shows in 1981, and four shows in 1982.

The disc labels for the 1981 shows read “A Night On The Road.”  For the 1982 shows, that was changed to “Supergroups Presents… A Night On The Road.”

The 1981 shows use a 700 kHz reference tone.  The 1982 shows use a 1000 kHz reference tone.

Setlist.fm shows "Tell Me Why" between "Touch" and "Sex (I'm a...)".  There was a cut there on the tape, so that may explain the missing song.

The date is confirmed by a listing in the Canarsie Courier.

Touch & Go is an unreleased song.

This version digitized January 2024 from a disc supplied to me by our pal, Sam Eliott's Mustache.  His copy was missing the cue sheet, but I found a low resolution copy out on the Internet.  I also found conclusive proof that the Pyramids are atomic powered spaceships.

----
Sometimes I run across something other than music to write about, and this is one of those times.

First up, though: Crawler, the tail end of the Paul Kossoff/ Back Street Crawler story.  Kossoff died in March of '76, but the band soldiered on with a tour of the United States in the fall of '77.  Tracks from that were issued on 1997's Pastime Dreamer (Red Steel Music RMC CD 0206)

The three tracks here are from My Father's Place.  The show was broadcast by WLIR-FM, so there's a much longer version of this out there, somewhere.

There are some vintage ads, including a deliciously terrible Tom Petty ad for his first album.

The Phoebe Snow interview starts with her saying that she got her name from a boxcar on the Lackawanna Railroad line. That sent me down an Internet rabbit hole: it turns out "Phoebe Snow" was one of America's most famous advertising icons at the dawn of the 20th Century.

Phoebe Snow was as well-known as the Energizer Bunny, Col. Sanders, or Mr. Peanut.

Railroads burned bituminous coal, which produced clouds of sooty smoke. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad burned anthracite coal, which burned without soot.

As an advertising gimmick, the railroad created the character Phoebe Snow, who rode the rails in a spotless white dress.  Dozens of ads were produced over a thirty-year period, featuring short rhymes on the benefits of riding the Road of Anthracite.

After the Second World War, they christened one of their passenger trains "The Phoebe Snow," and painted boxcars with the slogan, "The Route of Phoebe Snow."  And that's where a young Phoebe Ann Laub saw the name and took it as her own.

The last run of the train Phoebe Snow took place in 1970.

The singer Phoebe Snow passed away from a brain hemorrhage in 2010.

Okay, here we are with another recording loaned to me by Sam Elliot's Mustache, carefully wrapped up and shipped transcontinentally so that I may digitize it and present it to Our Beloved Audience here at the Voodoo Wagon.  As is often the case with music from a distance, I'm completely unfamiliar with both groups (Le Roux and Blackfoot).  Some of that is because in 1982 I was living' in the San Francisco punk rock underground.

But a lot of it is our regular topic, Rock and Roll Geography.  These two bands were far more popular in the South.  Le Roux's most successful song, "New Orleans Ladies" was #59 on the Billboard Hot 100, not even close to hitting Top 40...but was a #1 on stations in Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi, a #7 in Georgia, and charted high in Tennessee and South Carolina.

This is also a really good example of how the Billboard Hot 100 "averages out" regional hits.  The song went Top 40 in many markets, and didn't chart in others, but is ranked at #59, as if it was getting a tiny bit of airplay across the country.  That's not what happened.  It was a Top 40 hit in five southern states...and nowhere else...except....

It also hit the Top 40 in San Diego but I'm going to argue that doesn't disprove my carefully reasoned geographical thesis as that's SOUTHERN California.

As part of my efforts to document and confirm facts about the shows, my search for the show dates for the Blackfoot show turned up something interesting.  Well, interesting to me, anyway.

The Blackfoot show was listed in both the Greenville News (South Carolina), and the Tallahassee Democrat (Florida).  Now, I don't know much about this area; all the states are a lot smaller and closer together, so traveling to another state might make sense.  Kids from New Jersey cross the rivers to go to New York City of Philadelphia.  But a quick glance at a map revealed the following:

It's 145 miles from Greenville, SC to Atlanta (2 1/2-hour drive)

From Tallahassee to Atlanta?  261 miles (4 1/2-hour drive).

On top of that, there's an article in the Tallahassee paper about Tallahassee rock fans making 500-mile round trips to see rock concerts.

Okay, that just seems bug-nuts loony to Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï.  We'd go up to Sacramento sometimes (90 miles) but that was about it.  Part of that was again, geography.  In California, there's no rock venues to the north until you get to Portland; bands would play Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield down the San Joaquin Valley and then up over the mountains to L.A. and San Diego.  I never considered going to Los Angeles for a show, and anyone playing Fresno was going to play somewhere in the Bay Area..so the 500 mile rock and roll round trip never occurred to me as a thing to do.

So, today’s topic is: What's the farthest you traveled...back in the day...  to see a concert?  I don't mean now, I mean back then, when you were workin' some terrible job for even worse pay, back when you paid cash for tickets and didn't have an American Express Gold Card.

Superstars Radio Network - Five Live Promo LPs

The "Superstars Radio Network" was not connected to Westwood One's similarly named "Superstar Concert Series."  While the Superstars Radio Network produced a small number of promotional concert recordings and interview discs, the “network” itself created an earthshattering change in FM rock radio, ending free-form radio and replacing it with “Album Oriented Rock” radio.

In 1974, Lee Abrams moved to Atlanta and joined Kent Burkhart’s radio consulting firm. They sold the concept of rigorously researched tight playlists featuring established artists to struggling FM stations, in a bid to take audience share from traditional AM Top 40 stations.  FM receivers had become common in home stereos and car audio systems.  And research revealed there was a “vulnerable Top 40” listening audience to be scooped up.

Free-form FM was wildly eclectic and undisciplined.  Here in the Bay Area, KSAN did not accept ad agency commercials but produced their own spots. KZAP in Sacramento refused a Bank of America ad campaign because banks and capitalism were things they opposed.

Free-form FM programming was all over the place. You might hear John Coltrane, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, and Lou Reed in the same hour.  All great music but not what steals market share from a Top 40 station.

The research revealed that it wasn’t just what you played, it was also what you didn’t play:  the audience that might move over from AM didn’t want the kiddie stuff, so the Donny Osmonds and Starland Vocal Bands were gone…as were Motown, R&B and disco.

Replace that with a handful of album tracks by established artists such as the Who and Rolling Stones, and other similar bands that are already popular, and you’ve got a format that can turn a struggling FM stati
on into a money-making machine.

By 1978, forty stations had signed up with Burkhart/Abrams Superstars Radio Network.

The “network” was not a network in the traditional sense of NBC, ABC, or RKO. The Superstars network didn’t own or manage stations.  Burkhart/Abrams researched songs that would be widely popular to an AOR/Soft Rock audience, and the stations and local program directors fed information on what worked to attract audience (and what wasn’t working) back to Burkhart/Abrams.

While in general this meant stations repeated the same songs more often, played few (if any) black artists, it did allow for stations to adjust based on local conditions.  New Wave might be on the playlist in Philadelphia, but not in Louisville. Hard rock worked in some markets, soft rock and singer-songwriter in others.  The most important thing was that it worked in taking audience share from AM Top 40, and that attracted advertisers, and advertisers paid well.

As part of this “network,” a small amount of live concert and interview albums were produced by the Superstar Radio Network. Most of these came out in 1977 and 1978. These were issued and pressed by the record label. While the packaging usually says, “Superstars Radio Network Presents….” there is no common record label, as with King Biscuit, NBC’s The Source, or RKO’s Captured Live!

While the number of stations was low in 1977/1978, the discs were not just created for the radio broadcasting of the show. Additional copies were pressed up for promotional purposes.

“When Pousette-Dart Band’s new studio album comes out in May, we’re also going to be releasing a Live Superstars LP with it, which will be initially available for the Abrams network, and later on to all the AOR stations.  We’ll make available for promotion to all of the Abrams stations 25 copies of both this special limited pressing and the studio LP to give away.”

Here are five of those albums for you.  The Armatrading I posted already but at the time I had no knowledge of what the Superstar Radio Network actually was.  I did the Pousette-Dart show a few months back (but I don't think I posted it...) so the .TXT file is similarly ignorant about the network.

One more time:  A round of Voodoo Wagon applause for our pal, Sam Eliott's Mustache, who took the time (and money!) to package and ship four of those LPs from Philadelphia to the Bay Area.  Without his help, we wouldn't have these rare gems to share with you.

---------------------

Here's what I've identified as existing so far.  There’s a magazine reference to upcoming releases by Jimmy Buffett and Styx, but I’ve not found any evidence they were ever released on vinyl.

As there is no common numbering system for the releases (as they’re on many different record labels), the order in which they were issued is not known.  I’ve been able to identify a few release dates, but some of the 1977 recordings may have been released in 1978.

Joan Armatrading – Live At The Bijou Cafe, Philadelphia, February 18, 1977
A&M Records SP-841
Radio and Records June 10, 1977 issue mentions that this was the first show in the series.

Jesse Winchester – Superstars Radio Network Presents Jesse Winchester Live At The Bijou Cafe May 26, 1977
Bearsville – PRO 692
Radio and Records June 10, 1977 issue mentions that this was the next show in the series.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – On Tour With Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Atlantic – PR 281
Contains previously unreleased tracks "Tiger In A Spotlight" and "Bolero" (with London Philharmonic Orchestra).

Capitol Records – SPRO-1-8674
Broadcast date was August 27-28, 1977, as per full page ad in Radio and Records Aug. 1977 issue.
The ad lists 31 radio stations.

Atlantic PR 285 (1977)

Superstars Radio Network Presents The Babys Live At The Tower Theatre April 23, 1977
Chrysalis – CHS-4-PDJ

Southside Johnny & Ronnie Spector - Interview disc from 1977
Internet says, “In April 1977, to promote the release of Southside Johnny & Asbury Jukes 2nd Album, “This Time It’s for Real”, Johnny & Ronnie Spector recorded an interview at Alpha Studios in Philly for Superstar Radio Network. The interview was conducted by Sonny Fox and set up by Lee Abrams, who’s tightening of formats has contributed the blandness of most commercial radio that still lingers today.  The interview was pressed onto a vinyl with a handful of complete songs by EPIC records & sent out to radio stations. it's extremely rare, not even listed on Discogs

Jesse Winchester Live At The Bijou Café May 26, 1977 (Lee Abrams does the intro…)

The Pousette-Dart Band – Live At Sigma Sound, Philadelphia, November 15, 1977

12 Doug Podell - In Concert 94-52 Promo

Comes with: 300 dpi scans of the discs and cue sheets, and newspaper listings confirming the dates and venues, and a Canadian wire story about the Counting Crows.

Announcer Doug Podell gave a recording date for the Counting Crows show.  I tracked down the Edmunds date with Newspapers.com.

While the Superstar Concert series tended to be a single artist, In Concert was often split between two artists.  Often the artists appeal to different audiences, so vendors of the CD shows break the sets up.  This leaves the one of the CDs with no cue sheet.

Here's a two-artist 2-cd show from 1994 with Counting Crows and Dave Edmunds.  Modern rock meets rock classicist. I got lucky and this set was still together.

The Counting Crows show has an unreleased song, "Wiseblood."  I also want to note that the "Crows" are making their Voodoo Wagon debut with this set.

UPDATE! STOP THE PRESSES! (as we used to say in the newspaper business (ask your grandfather to explain what a newspaper was to you, kids....)).

As mentioned in the comments, one of our generous, kind-hearted, and knowledgeable Beloved Voodoo Wagon Audience (the best in blogland...) sent me an email with a larger edition of the Counting Crows show.   Sound quality is excellent, so if you like the abbreviated Westwood One edit, you're going to love this even more, so here it is:

I also want a round of applause for Voodoo Gang Member "Matt W" who took the time to write and send us the file!

David Bowie - You're A Dude Live L.A. 2004

 *THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER

I've been having trouble with blogger lately. Couldn't leave comments, would not sign me in etc. I had also noticed that when Voodoo Wagon came up on the other sites that shows what we have posted it said "Test" and that was because I was trying to figure out if Blooger would let me post at all. Finally with help from Google I figured it out. So if you find yourself in that predicament you will have to allow cookies. Things seems to be fine (for now) . We post a lot of Bowie here so I'm surprised this is one we haven't. See scans
