Just saw it (at last) tonight. A splendid film by John Huston about the death of one world and the birth of another, with characters having the obligation to mourn and accept the end of this world. A great black and white, especially in the desert scenes. No one put on Film wilderness like Huston did. Clark Gable as a symbol of virility undermined by time and Maryline Monroe as an icon of innocence are superb. The Film is about men who enter in resistance against a world they don't recognize into (the sentence pronounced by Wallach about the supermarket and all at the end of the Film). I don't especially like this term, but the movie is talking about "toxic masculinity" when virility and pride is near to hurt you (the scene with Clift in the rodeo ride). But the critics of this 3 male characters is not that strict, they're all very endearing. Two lines in the movie sums up well what the movie is talking about. First the announcer of the rodeo ride: "We still have some men in the West". And when Gable is talking about the horses: "They're not what they used to be". Eli Wallach performance's is solid too. Really enjoy the scene where he chasing the mustangs in his plane.
