I just finished watching Angel Heart and I was absolutely blown away by how good the film was. I found Angel Heart when I was looking through Charlotte Rampling's filmography and I immediately decided to watch it when I saw that the cast also included Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro, and Lisa Bonet. I usually find films through the director and not actors so this was a change of pace for me and I was surprised to see that the film was directed by a name I was not familiar with, Alan Parker.
I went over to Parker's imdb page and it turns out that I actually am familiar with a bunch of his films without even knowing it! This guy has a crazy filmography: Mississippi Burning, Angela's Ashes, The Wall, Midnight Express, Bugsy Malone, etc. His films have won 6 Oscars, 10 Golden Globes, and 19 BAFTA awards (and that's not even including his nominations). It's wild to me that such a diverse range of quality films could be made by the same person and I feel like Alan Parker should be talked about more so I'm starting up a discussion about him.
What do you guys think? Is he under-appreciated or does he get enough attention already? Which is your favorite film of his? Would love to hear some thoughts!

I've been haunted by the thought of a Parker mini for awhile now and I've finally felt the need to share it with others. He's a guy who's become so defined by his prestige movies that it's kinda forgotten he liked to bounce around; Angel Heart next to Mississippi Burning, The Road to Wellville next to Evita. He's kind of a Demme where he covers a lot of bases: clears and bounces, underseen gems and "classics" that are deeply problematic, Pink Floyd and Andrew Lloyd Webber. A man who begins his career with Bugsy Malone and ends it with The Life of David Gale (the rare bounce that seemingly led to a life sentence in director jail) is someone worth figuring out, imo.

Because a series that begins with a musical in the gangster era, with all the parts are being played by child actors, and ends with a bizarre, misbegotten and suprisingly divisive Kevin Spacey star vehicle could be an all-timer miniseries!
And I didn't even touched on the masterpieces he directed (Angel Heart!, The Commitments!), or being part of the generation of directors who started in british advertising (like Tony & Ridley Scott, Adrien Lyne), or that he directed a tons of hits in the 70's-80's who strangely lost it's footprint in the cultural zeigeist nowadays! (case in point: Griffin being totally surprised that Midnight Express was such a huge deal when it came out on the Halloween episode).
Or the fact that the same guy who directed Pink Floyd The Wall also made The Road to Wellville, one of the most insane bounces that I've ever witnessed!
