"My contract is up for my radio show at the end of the year and I've
made the decision not to do radio anymore," Laura Schlessinger (KTTH m-f, 9p-12a) told Larry King. "The
reason is I want to regain my First Amendment rights. I want to be able
to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful
and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group
deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack
affiliates, attack sponsors. I'm sort of done with that."
Good.
But spare us, Doc, the 1st Amendment victim bullshit. Now you can espouse your right-wing political views without dragging needy, personal advice-seeking women into your negative, self-righteous, smash-mouth routine.
Dr. Laura is still stinging from blow-back from her race-based blithering last week. She should have gotten out of the advice business and into the Fox News political arena long ago: Then her out-of-the-mainstream stances against gays; her religio/economic sense of superiority and her overbearing, old testament scolding might have fit.
Her teevee career ended rather ignominiously in 2000, after only a few months, laughable ratings and a boycott by gays whom, she had proclaimed were "biological errors." She opposes gay adoption and marriage, and categorizes gays and lesbians as pedophiles abnormal, deviant and dysfunctional. Her lack of moral terpitude, as demonstrated in her personal affairs, dysfunctional family life, even her cheating at yacht-racing is legendary. (see Dr. Laura naked here.) This delectable from Wikipedia:
The credibility of Schlessinger's TV show also suffered during its first month. The New York Post and other media reported that Schlessinger had used a member of her
staff more than once to falsely pose as a guest on the show. A September
25, 2000, episode named "Readin', Writin', and Cheatin'" featured a
so-called college student who specialized in professional note-taking.
On the next day's show, "Getting to the Altar," the same guest appeared
in different hair and makeup, and said she was a woman living with her
boyfriend. In fact, the woman was San-D Duchas, a researcher for the
show. Her name even appeared in the closing credits of the shows on
which she posed as a guest.
Dr. Laura is still fundamentalist on the air, despite renunciation of her orthodox Judaism in 2003. Evangelicals claim from time to time she's converted, and we expect she'll do so if and when if she needs to.
“Dr. Laura’s radio career ended in disgrace tonight because of the
bigoted, ugly and hateful remarks made on her show. Americans have had
enough,”said Media Matters' president, Eric Burns, in the statement.
“Listeners are now holding hosts, affiliates, and sponsors accountable
for the offensive and inexcusable content on the airwaves.” Read all her incendiary remarks here.
This is a big deal for corporate radio: Although Schlessinger has dropped to around 250 affiliates from a one-time high of about 500, she's still a big piece of the radio dial.
It's a bigger deal for the American public... the moral left has been successful in routing a loudmouthed extremist from right-wing media. It's a rare occasion as well.
