Major spoilers ahead please dont read if you havent finished the four stormlight archive books
I believe that taravangian’s smartest state far exceeded the intelligence and awareness of shards. So much so that the scratches that he wrote on his walls were meant to only guide but also manipulate both himself and odium into a scenario where he becomes odium.
He did not simply stumble into the power, this in it’s entirely is part of his win condition. All that’s left is for him to somehow overcome the temptation that comes with the power, but its likely that he already set things in motion that would result in his defeat.
