Supreme Court skeptical of Texas, Florida regulation of social media moderation

At oral arguments on Monday, the justices appeared wary of two state laws that would prevent how social media companies from certain content moderation. Several justices suggested that they thought the laws violated the First Amendment by blocking companies from making decisions about the content they host.

Homeowners argue for interest on escrow accounts held by national banks

The justices will hear argument in a case reviewing a lower court decision concluding that the National Bank Act preempts a New York statute requiring banks to pay interest on escrow accounts they hold to pay taxes and insurance premiums for their mortgage borrowers. The court will consider whether the New York statute applies to national banks.

ARGUMENT ANALYSIS

Supreme Court likely to block EPA ozone regulation

At oral argument on Wednesday a majority of the court seemed sympathetic to a group of states and fuel industry associations who asked the justices on an emergency basis to block an Environmental Protection Agency rule that would obligate 23 states to reduce ozone emissions that travel across state lines.

Court declines to put hold on Boy Scouts bankruptcy plan

With an unsigned order on Thursday the Supreme Court rejected a request from a group of sexual abuse victims to temporarily put on hold a bankruptcy plan for the Boy Scouts of America while their challenge continues in a lower court. The issue with the plan, they said, is the same as that at the center of December’s Purdue Pharma case.
