Yes, I know, the story is ridiculous. Yes, it takes an absolutely unnecessary detour subplot for 30 minutes. Yes, the characters and dialogue are cliché. And yes, the entire plot is profoundly stupid.
But my goodness, the action sequences far make up for all its faults.
I'm not going to list why True Lies' action sequences are simply better than most, if not all, modern blockbusters. We all know why: prevalent reliance on CGI, green screen in favor of locations, chopped-to-bits editing, no sense of scale due to the loss of depth thanks to the last two points, and no attempt to build momentum in sequences. I could go on.
But, man, it’s sad that visually, in my opinion, nothing that has been released in the past 20 years comes close to the astonishing achievement Cameron and his team pulled off.
