Parent Post: Cult of the Princess and Superhero Alternatives

The cult of the princess, with all of its feudal and patriarchal aspects, is so intrinsically tied to the socialization of little girls that my daughter was already consuming it, despite the fact that both my partner and I haven't been feeding it to her, because contemporary gender socialization is what it is. Meaning, it's fucking immanent. Thankfully, I had something of a breakthrough several days ago when my discovery of an unopened "Wonder Woman" bendable toy––a gift from one of my daughter's aunts––coincided with my daughter's decision to, in the midst of her claims about being a princess (which means, for some reason, nothing more than wearing dresses) suddenly declare herself a "super hero", pretend that a kitchen towel was a cape, and run about the kitchen/living room.  And yes, before you say it, I am aware that Diana is the princess of Themyscira (I used to be a comic geek, peoples, thanks to a dad who read me his original Daredevil comic

Tao of Mao Special: the ABCs of Revisionism (part 4)

Here is the final page of the Tao of Mao ABCs .  Although it might not be the strongest ending (Z was difficult––I almost went with "Zinoviev"!), at least it's finished.  Now I can get back to writing substantial entries without having to worry about finishing this project.  Who knows when this sad little comic strip will return. Letters W - Z [If you have enjoyed this comic series, or even passed it along to friends out of sheer disgust, please feel free to donate to this blog !]

Tao of Mao Special: The ABCs of Revisionism (part 3)

Here is the fourth page of the comic, offensively humorous as usual.  Only one more page after this, and then I will return to more substantial and sober-minded posts.  Just remember: if you're offended, it's probably about you! Letters  R to V.

Tao of Mao Special: The ABCs of Revisionism (part 2)

Due to the time it takes to lay-out this [hopefully] hilarious alphabet, I figure that I can get several posts out of it and thus save me the time of having to write something sober and substantial this week.  Although I provided two pages for the first post––mainly because it had been years since I provided interested readers with a return to the Tao of Mao  comic strip––each successive post, including this one, will be a single page.  Hence: five pages in four posts. So here is page three which consists of the letters M  through Q.   Enjoy! Tao of Mao ABCs: letters M - Q

Tao of Mao Special: the ABCs of Revisionism (part 1)

The other day I encountered a lefty ABC s board book aimed at children entitled "A is for Activism".  After perusing its contents and discovering that it was generally left-liberal nonsense, with some abstract anarchism here and there ("Z is for Zapatista"), I decided I would write my own ABC  rhyming book where the letters accorded to more precise leftist concepts.  After all, I have a daughter and I would like an ABC board book capable of teaching her difficult concepts, or at least with funny rhymes that would make her want to discuss these difficult concepts, from the hard left tradition. While I was writing my ABC s book, however, I kept thinking up semi-sectarian, leftist in-joke rhymes that were generally inappropriate for the kind of book I wanted to write.  I mean, I wanted a book that would introduce my kid to general concepts of the communism to which I ascribe and not filled with arcane movement jokes and insults.  Even still, I couldn't help think

All I Needed to Know About Communism I Learned from Cold-war Propaganda

Several days ago a close friend and comrade emailed me the comic collection This Godless Communism  which was a J. Edgar Hoover approved anti-communist propaganda series.  Although it is hilarious for its historical and theoretical inaccuracy, its mindless reification of capitalist ideology, and the fact that it is aimed at 1950s USAmerican families who are apparently all white and patriarchal, it is an interesting read due to the anti-communist discourse it represented.  All of the hallmarks of anti-communist ideology that continue to this day (communism was just as bad [if not identical as totalitarianism ] as fascism, communism is about mindless hive-mind collectivity, communism is about a flawed notion of "human nature", communism is anti-freedom, communism killed multi-millions, etc.), and that even infect some "leftwing" understandings of actually existing socialism, are present in this comic.  So I figured it might be useful to go through some of this comic&#

The Stupidest and Most Problematic Comic Ever

I have made the mistake of reading several issues of Jim Balent's Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose and I feel that I have become both stupider and politically retrograde because of this waste of a couple hours I will never, ever get back. Believing that the combined terms "fantasy" and "comic" and "cult following" would lead to something awesome (I love fantasy and comics and things with cult followings!) I decided to download this abomination of a comic. Perhaps in the past I would have paid for it at a local comic book store but, since I am currently jobless, that is not an option. Also, now having seen the cover art I can honestly say that, "fantasy cult comic" notwithstanding, I would not buy anything that looked so hideous. Of course, fantasy-sexist-erotic covers might not, to be fair, be adequate representations of the content. I made that point in a previous entry , and so perhaps these terrible covers, one would hope, are like th
