#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham returns to Mississippi in his most gripping legal thriller yet, the riveting story of two sons of immigrant families who grow up as friends, but ultimately find themselves on opposite sides of the law. Grisham's trademark twists and turns will keep you tearing through the pages until the stunning conclusion. For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.   Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco grew up in Biloxi in the sixties and were childhood friends, as well as Little League all-stars. But as teenagers, their lives took them in different directions. Keith's father became a legendary prosecutor, determined to "clean up the Coast." Hugh's father became the "Boss" of Biloxi's criminal underground. Keith went to law school and followed in his father's footsteps. Hugh preferred the nightlife and worked in his father's clubs. The two families were headed for a showdown, one that would happen in a courtroom.   Life itself hangs in the balance in The Boys from Biloxi, a sweeping saga rich with history and with a large cast of unforgettable characters.… (more)

The usual page-turning fare from one of my favorite escape artists. Two immigrant families settled along the Gulf shore in Mississippi follow divergent paths to "success", and despite early associations end up on opposite sides of the law, and in sometimes violent conflict. Pure entertainment, not a lot to say about it. Grisham does his usual tutorial on legal tactics and courtroom shenanigans, which never feels "teachy", and never gets old for me. There is an epic editorial FAIL near the end, however, when one thug is dead on page 412, "freezing in Maine" on page 413, "behind bars" on page 414, and then dead again on page 435. ( )

Story seemed to be dragged out for no good reason. Not his best work ( )

Another one down. This one was given to me by my second job’s boss. It was okay. First time reading John Grisham, didn’t know what to expect. I also own The Judge’s List. It is about 45 down on my book list though.
This novel is based in Biloxi and set in the mid-1900s. It cover’s a few generations worth of immigrants and how they settled into southern life. About three generations down, now the two boys are best friends and are the main characters. But as they grow older they grow apart and go their separate ways, with two very different careers. Until one gets in trouble and the other has to make an important decision regarding his old friend.
I really like Grisham’s writing style. It is smooth and flows well. He definitely took the time to plot out the story line and his characters. I liked the setting and how detailed he got with the families and careers.
I wasn’t a fan of the ending. I can’t give it away though since I don’t like to give spoilers. That is the only complaint I have about this book.

★★★★ I always knock a star if I don’t like the ending. ☹ But I definitely recommend to give it a shot! ( )
