State of the Bantamweight Division Post UFC 250

UFC 250 had some huge Batantamweight implications on Saturday night, and I don't think it disappointed! Here are my humble thoughts on how the 135 landscape shifted after what transpired:

  • If Petr Yan vs Jose Aldo is indeed slated for the vacant title, Aljamain Sterling gets the first crack at whomever wins. He left no doubt that he's the number 1 contender in the division and most deserving of a chance at gold.

  • Switching camps seemed to pay dividends for Cody Garbrandt! By giving him the co-main slot, the UFC seems to seriously value his name. I could see him jumping all the way up to 4th in the rankings and grabbing a matchup up with Marlon Moraes or the loser of the vacant title fight.

  • Most people expected an extremely competitive performance from Cory Sandhagen, however he was instead finished inside of 90 seconds. It will be very interesting to see what the UFC decides to do with him, because he's still an exciting contender with a lot of potential. I'm not sure if they would want to rematch him with Raphael Assuncao, or if he would now accept a fight with Pedro Munhoz (who was offered to him earlier in the Spring) or someone like Jimmie Rivera.

  • The middle of the Bantamweight division is arguably even more clustered than the top, and someone who I assume will find their way squarely in that mess is Sean O'Malley. With an impressive one-punch finish of a tough vet like Eddie Wineland, mixed with his colorful personality (and hair) I could see Sugar receiving digits by his name. Perhaps borderline single digit. Before he's given a serious contender, I'd like to see the Marlon Vera fight rebooked.

  • Another one whom is caught in the middle-tier rankings is Cody Stamann. In one of the most emotional performances I've ever seen, he defeated Brian Khelleher. Although that fight was at Featherweight, Cody seemed to hint that 135 is still the future for him. If he does indeed want to stay at 135, I could see a rematch with Song Yadong as that fight came out to a draw back in December.

  • Outside of UFC 250, Where does Dominick Cruz fit into this? Could the UFC totally go out of left field and rebook Cruz/Garbrandt II? Also something to keep in mind for (way) down the road, TJ Dillashaw is slated to return January 19th, 2021. It will be fun to inject him into the mix as well! No pun intended...

Obviously I'm just a nobody, so you probably don't care too much about what I think, but I wanted to get the conversation going about where r/MMA sees this division headed... I love the potential for serious drama, especially when Fight Island is up and running.

I'd love to hear what everyone thinks! Did I miss anything? Agree or disagree with my thoughts? Let me know :)

Edited to remove a few words, and mention that this is all under the assumption that Henry Cejudo will remain retired...
