There's probably a "Why Gold" post somewhere with a dude searching for a hard drive in a dumpster... oh wait there are plenty of them

[–]jondubb 90 points91 points  (17 children)

Or boating accidents where the ledger flies off.

[–]HuffDaddy009 45 points46 points  (12 children)

Losing your ledger just means you are out about 70 bucks. You are still golden if you have the seed phrase.

[–]Acer707 30 points31 points  (9 children)

You mean that one I have on the Cryptosteel in my anus?

[–]No-Fee6610 10 points11 points  (3 children)

just don't forget to take it out before you take a dump on the latrine otherwise you also gonna have a shit time searching for your seed in the dump-ster

[–]aelius666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crypto is getting too much advance everywhere in this world.

[–]povhpower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The post headlines is quite effective because of the term bitcoin.

[–]bdirbas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know right. It's really good. I am gonna spend every dollar in there

[–]unsociallydistanced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you want me to touch the light switch? Hm? And all the sports drank conveniently spilled on the floor, full of electrolytes?

[–][deleted] 745 points746 points  (56 children)

I mean, you laugh, but it's just as easy to lose your private keys if you're not careful.

[–]NateNutrition 642 points643 points  (17 children)

Just as easy? Lol yeah I hate when I accidentally boil my gold bars in strong acids

[–]Teleporter55 155 points156 points  (6 children)

I mean in reality it's a whole lot easier to lose your coins but smug is better than sense on Reddit

[–]denidekrot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People always keep their mistakes on other person head.

[–]mookizee 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Damn, if I had an award to give.

[–]Biddycola 28 points29 points  (3 children)

These asset are incomparable in my opinion

[–]NateNutrition 84 points85 points  (2 children)

I agree. I just found the premise funny considering how easy it is to lose crypto. I saw a guy get scammed out of 6 figures for taking a screenshot of a key but OP is worried your gold isn't safe from a spontaneous science experiment 😅.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if your seed is etched onto a gold bar?

[–]Ghost_Sushimi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He tripped and it fell in a vat of acid!

[–]animalinstinct10m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yoooo...I literally just laughed out loud! This comment is hilarious!!!

[–]neganigg 115 points116 points  (5 children)

Just as easy? Its a lot easier.

[–]LifelessLewis 4 points5 points  (2 children)

The gold is quite easily recoverable from this as well.

[–]cryptolulz 37 points38 points  (19 children)

Yeah true that, the liquid gold could be mopped up and some % recovered... Once your private keys are lost gg

[–]wollier12 19 points20 points  (16 children)

All the gold is still there and could most likely be recovered. Precipitated back out.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (9 children)

A chemist did this to protect gold from occupying Nazis. I forget the details but that british professor who got knighted for his youtube channel on chemistry talked about it.

[–]Bitfroind 29 points30 points  (1 child)

In April 1940, early in the Second World War, Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Denmark.[94] To prevent the Germans from discovering Max von Laue's and James Franck's gold Nobel medals, Bohr had de Hevesy dissolve them in aqua regia. In this form, they were stored on a shelf at the Institute until after the war, when the gold was precipitated and the medals re-struck by the Nobel Foundation. Bohr's own medal had been donated to an auction to the Fund for Finnish Relief, and was auctioned off in March 1940, along with the medal of August Krogh. The buyer later donated the two medals to the Danish Historical Museum in Frederiksborg Castle, where they are still kept.[95]

Ohhh wao.. thabkyou for the information and the link great to hear n read that such methods were used so many years ago back then.

[–]poopybutt29 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I learned a similar story where it was platinum instead of gold. But it was a scientist, I think, who bought platinum wire and bent into hangers to smuggle out of Austria.

Edit Scientist not a jeweler. Bought the platinum wire, didn’t roll it. Found out it was Austria.

[–]givemegreencard 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Periodic Videos! Love that channel, got me interested in chemistry before I realized hard science was too much math for me

[–]Gunzenator 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah, at the price of gold… you are doing everything possible to get that back… but you still loose time and resources doing that.

Guys, you know that you can have diverse portfolio, right? Just because bitcoin is awesome doesn’t mean gold isn’t cool too. Guess what? It is. So is having bitcoin. So is owning real estate or a business.

    [–]B0risTheManskinner 111 points112 points  (15 children)

I think you’re wrong. I’m pretty sure that we can only have one investment at a time and if you want a new one you have to get rid of the old one. Not sure what you’re talking about as its completely illogical, makes no sense, and hurts my head to even think about.

    [–]pizzaorburrito 39 points40 points  (0 children)

    Fuck. You’re right. 😔

    [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (4 children)

Put your eggs all in one basket. That way, you can save money on baskets, and that extra money can itself then go into the basket!

Besides, have you ever tried carrying around multiple baskets? Who's got time for that nonsense?

    [–]DamnDirtyHippie 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Big basket is going to censor you for this

    [–]andayanisherly28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putting all your eggs in one basket will put you in a lot of risk. I would say , distribute your wealth across .

    [–]SXLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can spend more money into protection on the 1 basket than buying the same protection on all baskets. "taps head" Smart!

    [–]vectrox 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yeah I’m sure he didn’t drop the actual beaker

I think it's from a fairly large Youtube channel. He probably made 10x the price of that gold from the ad revenue alone. But yeah, the dropping part is probably fake.

      [–]WhiteTanto 16 points17 points  (1 child)

This is from NileRed on YouTube. He makes videos about various chemical reactions and explains the chemistry behind it while he performs the experiment. Very interesting and definitely worth watching if chemistry interests yous.

      [–]dmaddman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah! Heading to youtube right now. I am gonna be back after checking this

      [–]Ceshomru 24 points25 points  (17 children)

I think it is fake from start to finish. Could be wrong but it looked like the gold “bar” turned into a thin plate at some point, it just folded in on itself. Just a guess.

        [–]Pussy_Crook 5 points6 points  (1 child)

That is very much what dissolved gold looks like. I don’t think the entire bar was gold though. A bead of gold can turn an entire 4 liter volumetric flask a dark reddish color depending on how pure it is. That mass of pure gold with the volume of acid would be darker than the vid.

        [–]vortex30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        That's just real chemistry son..

        [–]mrASSMAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks capt obvious.. it’s a joke lol

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        For sure

        [–]GinchAnon 1 point2 points  (2 children)

definitely. nobody'd be carrying a container with that much of that strong of acid like that, and definitely not with... /math/ almost 6k USD worth of gold dissolved in it.

        [–]vectrox 2 points3 points  (2 children)

        [–]MrTorres 2 points3 points  (1 child)

doesn't mean the drop wasn't staged, or that the fluid wasn't substituted

        [–]vectrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My misunderstanding yes the drop is definitely fake

        [–]Purithian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree why would there be a random cube brick thingy there that he hits perfectly

        [–]Psyk0pathik 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the takeaway is: Don't dissolve your gold bouillon and carry it in a glasss flask.

        [–]steeveperry 52 points53 points  (2 children)

It’s way easier to lose your Bitcoin than it is to melt gold and spill it on the floor.

        [–]Gonewrong8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're gonna have to actually do it on purpose

        [–]Zizothegreat-22 23 points24 points  (16 children)

What would happen to bitcoin if the Internet goes away due to war or natural disasters?

        [–]halroth 23 points24 points  (3 children)

Or the power goes out. All digital currency would be lost, including most of the stock markets. Water, food, land, and labor would be the real values.

        [–]SaltLifeDPP 7 points8 points  (1 child)

At that point, bullets would be the only store of value for a good 5 to 10 years.

        [–]GreyHexagon 6 points7 points  (2 children)

If the internet totally goes down that's a global apocalypse situation. Gold probably won't be worth much for a while - it would deffinately come back at some point, it always has, but in the apocalypse people only care about food and water.

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then it looks like we're back to making ledger updates via carrier pigeon and smoke signals.

        [–]James-the-Bond-one 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Gold and lead. That's all you will ever need.

(Awlrite!... water, food, women, a gun, gunpowder, clean underwear, coffee...)

        [–]Pezotecom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you mean the internet like the submarine cables, then we won't be able to communicate between continents and some countries. But if connections are still valid on land, then we can still use bitcoin and so can them. I'm not an expert but given that no-one can actually steal people's funds, we can have two chains and then merge them somehow.

If you mean total destruction of cables, antennas and even energy centrals, bitcoin can still work but it won't be that useful in that moment.

Bitcoin as a network of distributed computers may fall, but the bitcoin database and the protocol are as indestructible as an idea.

        [–]xdebug-error 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same as your bank balance, except more resilient. All you need is any kind of mesh network and at least one node.

If your bank's infrastructure is gone, and your country / insurance won't reimburse you (i.e. in an event like this) it's gone

        [–]Skweazle 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I believe there is actually a blockchain satellite but you would still need batteries for whatever device you're trying to use

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But couldn't the owner of that satellite essentially make it private and/or effectively control all bitcoin transactions by regulating who has access to it?

        [–]iamanomynous 31 points32 points  (37 children)

Do Bitcoiners realise BTC can be destroyed forever? That dissolved gold can be reclaimed.

        [–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (3 children)

Nope, he dropped it on the floor. Per the court ruling of Ground v. Lava, floor gold is no longer gold.

        [–]khizoa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You forgot about the ruling of the USA vs Little Timmy.

If the object has made contact with the floor for less than a total of 5 consecutive seconds, the object is deemed safe and also still edible.

        [–]iamanomynous 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You can actually dig out the floor where the spill was and get the gold back. The Au atoms are there :)

        [–]flatfanny45 20 points21 points  (9 children)

Nitric acid? What is the point of this post lmao

        [–]Marmot55 17 points18 points  (8 children)

Mixture of concentrated nitric and sulfuric acids. The gold isn’t actually gone, it’s just dissolved into ions that can be recovered (though not easily). This post is silly. But watching metal dissolve is kind of fun.

        [–]Exotemporal 2 points3 points  (4 children)

It's super easy to recover the gold in solution. You just have to drop a few spoonfuls of Stump Out (that you can buy at any gardening store) and the gold will be precipitated out of solution. It will drop out of the liquid and form a layer of gold powder at the bottom of the beaker. The remaining liquid will be clear instead of yellow and a simple test will confirm that it doesn't contain gold anymore. Then, you just have to remove the clear liquid, wash the brown gold powder to remove potential residues of Stump Out and you can melt the powder with an oxyacetylene torch (even simple propane will do the trick) and pour it into a mold to form a new ingot.

        [–]Marmot55 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I didn’t know there were commercially available products for this that were so straightforward. Interesting. Thanks!

        [–]Exotemporal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Stump Out is simple sodium metabisulfite!

It's also possible to precipitate gold using ferrous sulfate (which can be found for cheap in the form of natural dye for yarn or for high prices in the form of dietary supplements which are useless for this if they also contain excipients) and quadratic precipitant (at $20 a pound from chemistry shops).

Stump Out is my favorite though, thanks to its low price ($7 per pound on Amazon and possibly even cheaper in person) and indefinite shelf life.

        [–]trickle_up_freedom 22 points23 points  (22 children)

<shrug> I keep my silver and gold in vaults around the world outside of the jurisdiction of the US Government (SEC, Central Banks).

A price correction on both silver and gold are LONG overdue.

Good to have crypto, gold, silver, property, and physical items of real value as a hedge against Bad Governments and Poor Monetary Policy.... (Like the US has had for 50+ years).

        [–]MrPicklePop 22 points23 points  (21 children)

If it’s not in your hands, it’s not yours. Good luck traveling to another nation and receiving physical gold if the world order collapses in on itself.

        [–]cahrage 12 points13 points  (10 children)

Btc isn’t in your hands either. Good luck accessing the internet if the world order collapses

        [–]LaForge_Maneuver 21 points22 points  (9 children)

If the world order collapses I'll have plenty more to worry about than bitcoin or gold.

        [–]MrPicklePop 6 points7 points  (7 children)

The world order might collapse, but gold has always been traded for thousands of years through many world order collapses.

        [–]LaForge_Maneuver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me and you have a different definition of world collapse.

        [–]GreyHexagon 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Shortly after a worldwide collapse the only think anyone would care about us food, water, and security.

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

And how do you buy that?

        [–]GreyHexagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. In that situation all wealth besides food and water is wiped away.

        [–]dwin31 29 points30 points  (6 children)

Yeah, I'm not a chemist, but this seems off.

I actually thought it was going to be about the very real issue of fake gold coins and bullion circulating out there.

        [–]rtrocc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Trust me, this guy would make Heisenberg look bad. Look up his main channel on YT. He explains a lot of detail in his videos but then made a separate channel with shorter clips of the interesting parts.

        [–]Queelis 8 points9 points  (2 children)

It's aqua regia, if I remember correctly, a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids, the only thing that dissolves gold.

        [–]TomSurman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nitric and hydrochloric, in a ~1:3 ratio. Basically what he used in the video.

        [–]SHA256dynasty 2 points3 points  (1 child)

i was also expecting to see a fake bar exposed

        [–]reezy221 9 points10 points  (1 child)

This made me laugh out loud😂😂

        [–]Silent_Gemini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

        So wrapped BTC?

        [–]Jushavanuvvabeerthen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

        Most expensive Berocca ever

        [–]Global_Purchase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salt bae getting ready to charge $3000 for a cocktail

        [–]Mark_Bear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

        LOL

        [–]PowerToThePanels 39 points40 points  (11 children)

Lol funny. But that was probably an aluminum bar coated with gold patina.

You can see when he starts boiling, the yellow coloring sinks to the bottom. And eventually you can see the silver bar exposed before it disintegrates.

100g of gold would be $5,700 USD.

When the beaker breaks, that's just colored water. Hydrochloric acid would destroy the tiled floor, and would release toxic gases.

        [–]sapfromtrees 73 points74 points  (2 children)

Are you suggesting this post isn’t genuine and was created for the purpose of humour?

        [–]ultron290196 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It can't be. The internet is only for genuine truth.

        [–]TomSurman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The bar looks real, I don't doubt that he dissolved it. As he mentioned, it's possible to reclaim the gold and reconstitute it into a solid chunk again.

The thing he dropped at the end was almost certainly just water with food colouring though.

        [–]RainerDiethylether 16 points17 points  (2 children)

You are right with the breaking glas not being the chloroauric acid, that was just for fun.

But I am quite sure this was legit dissolving of gold in aqua regia. Recovery of the gold in solution is no problem at all, so the gold is not lost at all after this experiment.

The video is made by NileRed, I am sure he got the resources to conduct such an experiment.

Additionally, silver would form silver chloride when being exposed to HCl or aqua regia, which would react slower due to silver chloride not being after soluble. Don't think the final solution would be clear as well.

Edit: Damn, I was quite sure that I read silver instead of aluminium. So forget about the silver part

You're suggesting that the author of a ton of high quality chemistry videos didn't upload a real video of himself idiotically dumping acid all over his lab?

I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you.

        Well, not that shocked.

This was staged. It must have been. I know this channel. I mean it could also be a costly mistake. But his channel often has a little bit of humor in it.

        [–]akanaan5 1 point2 points  (1 child)

        what is his channel called

        [–]bootmeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        NileRed

The tungsten cube on the ground is a dead giveaway

        [–]Exotemporal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this one is fake, but I've seen a couple of videos from two different hobbyists that had something similar happen with large containers full of platinum (half as expensive as gold these days) in solution.

In the first case, his cat broke the container and the liquid penetrated the ground and was lost. In the second case, I don't remember how it was spilled, but it ended up getting soaked into a large amount of cardboard that was covering the floor. The guy incinerated the cardboard and then extracted the metal from the ashes by getting it back into solution. Most of the platinum was recovered and it was amazing to watch.

The first YouTuber is Cody's Lab and the second one, who only works with precious metals on his channel, is Sreetips.

I guess the argument would be it’s easier to lose your keys than a gold bar (I personally like both)

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So why bitcoin? I don't get it

        [–]boiledpangolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's significantly easier to blackhole bitcoins. The key is that you can't make more than 21M, not that some of it can be destroyed. There's also the part where it's significantly more efficient than gold when it comes to all things store of value and medium of exchange,

        Liquidated his position.

Sorry to bust the party, but it s easier to delete or burn your private key.

        [–]hatsuseno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if you inscribed the key onto a gold bar?

        [–]YungRylo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk man I’m all for crypto, but I think there’s a higher chance you lose a crypto wallet than lose your gold to acid lol

        [–]bullishbehavior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As opposed to bitcoin where if you lose your password your fucked. Okay thanks OP, try again!

I was about to dive in and buy some bitcoin in 2019, just before the Australian bushfires happened. No electricity, no water, no internet for 6 days. It was literally like "End of days" trucks and cars pulled up to the side because it was cash only to buy fuel. We had a generator so it wasn't so bad. Pluss i had a lil bit of money stashed under the mattress. But no internet, no t.v, no phone reception. This was from a bushfire. Forget the collapse of world order, fear a co-ordinated attack by an enemy, targeting infrastructure. With the volatility of bitcoin at the time with crypto going up and down like a yo yo. I brought gold instead.

Gold Guy drops Aqua regia on ground. Literally any squeegee and a bucket will help him recover his mistake.

Bitcoin guy looses password and back up to wallet. 0 chance of recovery…

        Solid win for bitcoin ???

        [–]0xkaneki_ken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For bitcoin, it’s much simpler. Just lose your key. 🤷

        [–]tendieful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea cause everyone is doing this to their gold bars right

        [–]bcyng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a visual representation of what transaction fees do to your Bitcoin.

        [–]Hipcatjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a joke. go check out his youtube channel Nilered. I have been following him for years. Awesome chemistry stuff

        [–]chaos0510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easier to lose your private keys than it is to accidentally melt gold though lmao

        [–]bmoses91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was the stupidest shit I’ve seen in a while.
